Welcome back! Alright, let's get back into it...

The Changes We'd Like To See In The Next Pokémon Update

Accessibility features

Bigger sparkles

The small sparkles on the ground, which usually signify an item that has been dropped, like a berry, Pokémon materials, or something out of a trainer's pocket, are a really nice addition to the items scattered around Paldea. But they're so small! Having an option to make them a little bigger or more obvious would be fantastic for accessibility.

Bigger Pokémon

Speaking of accessibility, the Pokémon sizing in ScarVi is worth addressing. It's really fun to have Pokémon appearing as their true sizes, and it makes the world feel realistic, but if we have to bump into another teeny-tiny bug Pokémon or a Flabébé that we couldn't see, we'll go ballistic. Again, this could perhaps be an option in the settings menu, just to give a helping hand to those with eyesight difficulties!

Bigger shinies

And while we're on the topic of making things a bit easier on players, could we perhaps get a better indication of shiny Pokémon, like a sound and/or a visual effect? Some are easy to spot, but so many shiny Pokémon are very similar to their non-shiny counterparts, and it's hard to see those out in the wild. Just make them a bit more sparkly, maybe? Sure, it might ruin the verisimilitude, but it breaks our heart a bit to think that we're missing out on all those lovely shinies.

Colourblind options

We know this one's massively unlikely, but with all the accessibility options we see in games like The Last of Us and God of War, it seems a bit embarrassing to have one of the biggest franchises in video games completely ignoring even the smallest accessibility options. At the very least, it would be nice to have colourblind options in there, which could give better indications of shiny Pokémon, HP level, and other small colour changes here and there. Wouldn't that be nice?

Visual changes

More trees

Oooooh yes, we know Pokéfans have big issues with the trees in Pokémon, but have you noticed that there are, like, five trees in every area in Paldea? Did something bad happen? Are forests too taxing on the Switch? We don't have an answer, but we miss trees.

Better battle animations

Yes, we'd like to have the option to skip them. But we'd also like them to be better. There are some fantastic ones in there already — Lokix's Double Kick is a particular highlight — but many have been reduced to the old-fashioned "ball of light/disembodied limb" animation of Pokémons past. It's a shame to be losing those details.

Speedier animations

And hey, while we're at it, we'd love to have things sped up a little. In particular, ability activations and stat changes, which currently play one-by-one, with text displaying after each one. It's exhausting. Have you tried fighting a Klawf? Its Anger Shell ability, which raises three stats and lowers two, takes longer than the battle itself, sometimes!

Let's just have those animations play once, with a summary of what just happened, including all the stats that were raised or lowered.

Fix shops

So... what's up with the shops in Paldea? Why are there so many of them, with such a tiny selection of clothing? Why is there a glasses shop that only sells one particular type of glasses, albeit in multiple colours? Why on earth is there a separate shop for socks?

We really like the clothing shops that have themes, like the designer fashion of Veracidad and the biker gear of Seguro Style, and we'd love to see more of those. And we'd love to not have to go to five different shops to check out all the clothes. Thanks.

Shop interiors

While we're on the topic of shops... would it be too much to ask for the shops to have interiors again? Honestly, we don't actually mind being presented with a menu when we enter a shop, because it makes it a lot faster to buy things (or it would, if the loading times were better), but we'd still love to see an interior behind the menu instead of just... a static backdrop.

Fix restaurants

We don't even know where to start. Why are there so many restaurants? Why are there so many of them in the same area? There are dozens of Seabreeze Cafés, and okay, it's kinda funny to see a sort of Starbucks-esque monopoly represented in a game, but it's just a bit pointless. Especially as we can't go into houses any more. It all just feels a bit copy-paste.

Fix cities

The cities are pretty. But they're awfully dead. What lunatic town planner decided that a settlement with a population in the double digits needed a 200-step staircase? Why are the plazas so big if no one actually hangs out there? We know that the NPC count is due to some technological limitation, no doubt, but could they not have made cities that were a little less gigantic to hide that fact?

If we could suggest a fix, it would be... well, just more people. Or more stuff. Maybe some wild Pokémon, like the Swablu that appear to be the Paldean version of city pigeons, or more European-style terrasse seating. More food carts. More fountains and gardens. Just... more stuff!

Trash hunting

We did not appreciate what we had until it was gone, but Pokémon ScarVi have removed the ability to fish in bins. They haven't removed bins, though — they still exist around cities and towns, we just can't look in them. Oh, suuuure, it's gross to dig through bins, but if you didn't want us to be prize-seeking raccoons, then you should never have put prizes in bins in the older Pokémon games!

Pokérus

Remember the excitement when you first discovered that your Pokémon had a rare and useful sickness? Yeah, that's dead. Pokérus is gone, and it's not like a "yay, we eradicated smallpox" kind of gone. It's just one more feature that's been stripped out of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and we don't know why.

Evolving Pokémon at level 100

It used to be the case that you could get a Pokémon all the way up to level 100 before evolving it, and then you could use a Rare Candy to trigger an evolution. Now, we haven't been able to test this yet, because grinding up to level 100 takes ages, but we've seen people saying that the evolution trick is no longer possible — which is particularly annoying for those with level 100 Pokémon that they want to transfer from Pokémon Home.

Reasons to visit towns

There used to be ongoing reasons to visit towns — post-game quests, unique shops, trades, and so on. Now, the smaller towns in Pokémon ScarVi are little more than glorified car parks. Sorry, Koraidon parks. The NPCs have nothing to say, you can't go into the houses, and most NPCs like the Name Rater and the Day-Care Couple have been replaced by... well, you.

The Academy staff are basically the only NPCs of interest, and they all hang out in the same place. We just wish there were more reasons to bother going back to towns that aren't Mesagoza!

The One Thing We Don't Want Patched Out

Please, don't get rid of the ability to backwards long jump. We're having so much fun galumphing around Paldea. Pleeeeease.

It turns out 30 things is not enough to address everything — the pop-in, the weird shadows, the fact that we can't affect the day/night cycle, the terrible frame rate, the crashes... but you know about those already, and so does Game Freak. Still, we'd love to see at least some of these quality-of-life changes in the next update/patch alongside the more serious fixes.

What change would you like to see added to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? Is there a glaring one that we missed, or do you agree with at least some of our list? Tell us in the comments!
