Not exactly subtle
Nicalis has made a name for itself in recent times publishing an array of physical titles on the Switch and also handling the release of Treasure's sublime shmup Ikaruga on the eShop. Teasing its attendance at PAX West 2018, the American publisher recently tweeted a photo of a gigantic game case with Ikaruga plastered...
"We're always listening to fan requests"
American publisher Nicalis has been around for longer than you might think, and has recently gained recognition for its efforts to publish physical versions of Switch games with extra treats for fans. Such goodies often include delightful trinkets such as soundtrack CDs or retro inspired instruction manuals;...
No more teases, only shmup bliss
Treasure has teamed up with Nicalis to bring at long last (after some cruel teasing) legendary Arcade/Gamecube/Dreamcast cult classic Ikaruga digitally to the Switch on the 29th of May. The complete experience - featuring local co-op along with online leader boards and Switch TATE option - will set you back $15 in...
Cave Story! Issac! VVVVVV!
Nicalis has been a company that’s given the Switch plenty of solid support, bringing the likes of quality games like Cave Story+, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, and The End is Nigh to Nintendo’s platform. Now, some of these games can seem a little on the pricey side—like the 14-year-old Cave Story going for...
"Some games just belong on physical cartridges"
When it comes to budget / indie retail games on the Nintendo Switch, Nicalis has established itself at the forefront of the industry. Often loading its retail editions with neat game manuals, stickers and more besides, they're become a popular purchasing option. Nicalis has now announced that it's...
It'll do, indeed
The Switch is rapidly amassing a library of wonderful titles, both from major, big-name developers and publishers, as well as creative indies. Ittle Dew 2+ is definitely the latter, and we mean that in the best possible way. To answer the inevitable question around what this young series is all about, the most direct...
What are you hoping Santa will bring you for Christmas this year? If you are lucky perhaps you will get the cheerily-titled The End Is Nigh, which Nicalis is bringing to Switch as a physical release on 12th December. For those not in the know, The End Is Nigh is the latest game from award-winning designer...
Thanks to Nicalis
We absolutely adored Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap when it landed on the Switch eShop earlier this year; Lizardcube's retro remake took the Sega Master System classic and improved on it in every way possible. Of course retro gamers love nothing more than collecting boxes and game cards, so having this game as a download only...
With a neat retail version in North America
Some of you may recall Ittle Dew by Ludosity, which saw release on the Wii U eShop and a range of platforms. It was once pitched as a Legend of Zelda game to Nintendo, but eventually forged its own identity and arrived as a rather good game. The re-jigged version of its successor, Ittle Dew 2+, is...
I hope you're happy now
Nicalis has been a prolific publisher in the first year of the Nintendo Switch, in some cases with retail titles. It's dipping more into affordable downloads now, however, and another to add to the list will be VVVVVV; it'll arrive on 17th November priced $9.99USD or 9,99€ in Europe. Originally developed by Terry...
Promises "some very cool announcements" in the coming months
Nicalis was a familiar name to Nintendo gamers in the Wii, Wii U and 3DS eras, but it's risen to prominence in the short lifespan of the Switch. It's been active in bringing out budget retail titles in particular, with the physical editions for the likes of Cave Story+ and The Binding of...
Colour manual! Keychain! Pouch!
Nicalis is establishing itself as a premier 'indie retail' publisher on the Switch, releasing games that include attractive extras in early runs of physical copies. It's now confirmed that its next release along those lines - Tiny Barbarian DX - will arrive in North America on 10th October. The box art by Susumu...
Along with Code of Princess and 1001 Spikes (maybe!)
Good old Nicalis does like to keep us on our toes. A recent tweet following its time exhibiting at PAX has sent the interwebz into detective mode about which games it will be bringing to the Switch eShop, which hadn't previously been confirmed. Having ploughed through the NeoGAF thread, these...
Save me, Mr. Tako!
Californian publisher Nicalis has announced the release of platformer / RPG crossover Save me Mr Tako: Tasukete Tako-San on Nintendo Switch, due out in the fourth quarter of this year.. From 23-year-old French developer Christophe Galati and composer Marc-Antoine Archier, Tako-San is a love letter to both the Game Boy...
"If Nintendo weren't such *****, LRG would have done it"
Publisher Nicalis has been doing a great job in bringing games such as Cave Story+ and The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ to Nintendo Switch retail. Collectors really appreciate physical releases such as this, and Nicalis clearly has a way of convincing Nintendo to relax its policies, as...
We love some nice box art!
Nicalis is on a bit of roll at the moment, with several games headed to the Switch in retail packaging; one of these is Tiny Barbarian DX, which is now scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2017 with an MSRP of $29.99. A European release could happen further down the line via Headup Games, as...
The game formerly known as '90s Arcade Racer
We were really looking forward to the gorgeous-looking 90's Arcade Racer landing on the Wii U eShop yonks ago, but it was not to be. Last year we reported that the game would no longer be coming to the Wii U and had been renamed as '90s Super GP. Thankfully we now have confirmation that Nicalis will...
EU box content and new release date
While it's a great bonus that the Nintendo Switch is a multi-region device, not everyone wants to import games. Sometimes having regional variations in your collection can trigger minor bouts of OCD. The Euro release date for The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ has slipped a few times, but...
Alongside Blade Strangers and The End is Nigh
Indie publisher Nicalis has confirmed that it is bringing Tiny Barbarian DX and Ittle Dew 2+ to the Nintendo Switch, as well as Blade Strangers and The End Is Nigh, both of which we already knew about. Coded by StarQuail Games, Tiny Barbarian DX offers "two-player coop
Made by Nicalis and Studio Saizensen
Nicalis appeared today in the [email protected] stream, and confirmed a new fighting title that's coming to Nintendo Switch along with other platforms such as PS4, PC and arcades. Co-developed with Studio Saizensen - Code of Princess and Sayonara UmiharaKawase / Yumi's Odd Odyssey - and features...
Time to buy it for the 3678th time
Cave Story is a brilliant game, and it will still be a brilliant game when it arrives as a retail title on Nintendo Switch as Cave Story+. It was arguably a trendsetter, and will go down in the annals as one of the best 'early' Indie games. It must be really good because we sure are tempted to buy it...
The start of a "strategic alliance" with Nicalis
Whenever we cover release details for Nicalis titles, in particular anything going to retail such as The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ and Cave Story+, 'in North America' should be an assumed add-on. The logistical challenges and realities of retail distribution has meant that early efforts from the...
Those cool little manuals are getting packed up
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ was initially expected as a Nintendo Switch launch game, but its release slid back to later in the month. The good news is that, in North America at least, the title is now set to arrive on the eShop and at retail on 17th March - it'll be $39.99 on the eShop. The...
Maybe even a physical release
Cave Story is one of those games that just doesn't seem like it'll ever be totally gone, but there is a reason: the game is pretty good. The game was originally developed in 2004 by one man—known as "Pixel"—and subsequently saw a release on dozens of platforms, many of which belonged to the Big N. There've been...
Arriving in the Spring
Nicalis is bringing anti-grav racer Redout and The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ to the Nintendo Switch, it has been confirmed. Redout looks to follow in the footsteps of F-Zero, WipEout and FAST Racing Neo with its futuristic racing and white-knuckle intensity. Developed by 34BigThings, it's built using the Unreal Engine and...
Get 'em while they're hot
With summer slowly but surely drawing to a close, many young gamers are no doubt scrambling to clear out as much of the backlog as possible before school resumes in fall. Unfortunately, Nicalis has just put on a sale on the eShop in North America, so that backlog could be in great danger of being lengthened even more. The...
Gentlemen, (don't) start your engines?
The long-awaiting 90's Arcade Racer has been given a new name - '90s Super GP - but it appears that the title is no longer coming to the Wii U. The product page on the Nicalis site lists the formats as Xbox One and PS4 only, along with a release date of Fall 2016 - that's three years after the original release...
And you thought it would never happen
Once upon a time, it seemed unlikely that The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth would ever arrive on the Wii U. Nicalis' Tyrone Rodriguez tweeted back in November that he wasn't happy with the performance of the game on Nintendo's console, and many assumed the game would be skipping the platform entirely. However,...
That'll rule New 3DS out too, then
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth ended an intriguing saga for Nintendo download gaming when it came to the Wii U and New 3DS eShop stores. Having previously been rejected by Nintendo based on its content, a gradual change in the company's approach eventually opened the door for Edmund McMillen's critically acclaimed...
It's still coming, as is our review
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth has arrived on Wii U in North America and is rather good, but the New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive version has encountered issues. A range of initial bugs were patched out rather quickly, but that update seemed to trigger an issue that freezes the game entirely in some cases. The
Could it finally be leaving Purgatory?
The Binding of Isaac may be one of the most-discussed games in Nintendo circles that hasn't yet appeared on a Nintendo system. The original title was denied publication by The Big N in 2012, seemingly over the nature of its content. Since then, the idea that The Binding of Isaac may still appear on the Wii U or...
The fun of Spikes! In your hands!
Tough-as-nails platformer 1001 Spikes has earned its share of die-hard (and often) fans. However, a seemingly consistent criticism of the Wii U version among players, and also mentioned in our review, is the lack of off-TV play. But publisher Nicalis has been listening, and have tweeted that a free update in the...
With a $5 loyalty discount for 3DS owners
1001 Spikes — formerly known as Aban Hawkins & the 1,001 Spikes — has been a long time coming for the Wii U and 3DS eShop stores, and Nintendo gamers may have been disappointed when it was announced earlier this week for a 3rd June arrival on Sony systems in North America, with no mention of the...
No news on a European release date as yet
Kemco’s well received iOS and Android title, Grinsia, will finally be arriving on the 3DS eShop next month. The port of the classic JRPG-style game is being published by Nicalis, which has previously brought us indie games such as Cave Story and VVVVVV; it's recently confirmed the release date on its...
Some regional release sagas roll on and on, with publishers on tight budgets or with limited resources sometimes deciding not to jump through the hoops for ratings and approval in Europe and Australia, particularly. One example has been running for so long that those asking for it gradually forgot to complain any more — Cave Story on the...
We have no objections...
Some may remember that, way back in 2012, Nintendo rejected The Binding of Isaac, a title developed by Edmund McMillen who is well known as one half of Team Meat. The rejection was due to "questionable religious content", though when talking about an improved version of the game in development shortly after McMillen...
Tyrone Rodriguez talks about regional differences
Nicalis is the publisher behind eShop classics like Cave Story, Ikachan and NightSky, and the company will be helping Pelikan13 launch the fabulous-looking '90s Arcade Racer on the Wii U later this year
Fez is "not even a consideration"
Phil Fish caused a bit of a stir over the weekend when he took to Twitter to say he felt Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was more suited to the PlayStation Vita than the trusty 3DS. One game that has never made it to a Nintendo console is Fish's biggest creation, Fez. We here at Nintendo Life decided to find out how many...
November to be exact
To everyone's surprise, Nicalis announced over Twitter earlier today that NightSky will be coming to the EU eShop 'sometime in November'. The indie developer revealed that the game has already been approved by Nintendo of Europe. The game releases stateside this coming Thursday (25th October). The full tweet reads: Hey EU,...
Cue custom rock music
Nicalis is one of the most well-known publishers on Nintendo's download services, and has already weighed in on the 3DS eShop with indie classic VVVVVV, which we voted as our favourite eShop game back in June. The developer and publisher is also well known by Nintendo download enthusiasts for producing three separate versions...
Nicalis hopes so
How many different variations on Cave Story do you own? It's been released on WiiWare, DSiWare and had a retail release on 3DS, but Nicalis isn't done yet, as it prepares another version for the 3DS eShop. Nintendo Power (via Nintendo World Report) states the publisher is preparing an eShop version, but it's not a digital release of...
NightSky in summer
The anguished cries ring out all over Europe. "When will we get VVVVVV?". Nicalis' Tyrone Rodriguez says "soon". Speaking at the IDEAM event in Spain — the same event where he announced 1001 Spikes for 3DS and Wii U — Rodriguez said European 3DS owners should get VVVVVV in "early May". North...
Due this year
Nicalis is still putting the finishing touches to its WiiWare translation of La-Mulana, but it's already announced its next project, 1,001 Spikes for digital release on Wii U and 3DS. Like La-Mulana and Cave Story, 1,001 Spikes is a retro-styled platformer that started life elsewhere, in this case as Xbox Live Indie game Aban Hawkins...
PEGI approve, after dotting the i's and counting the v's
When VVVVVV hit the North American eShop just before the New Year, European gamers could only look on with envy. The platform puzzler that started life as an indie PC game received an excellent 8/10 in our VVVVVV review, adding to the growing list of high-quality titles on the 3DS download...

Nintendo Download favourite Nicalis is happy with the eShop so far, with president Tyrone Rodriguez telling Destructoid he feels the eShop is a great stride forward for the company. Speaking on the decision to feature particular games and themes instead of give all games equal billing, Rodriguez said: The eShop, I feel, has really...

VVVVVVery good news
In the wake of its success bringing Cave Story to DSiWare, Nicalis has announced it's bringing VVVVVV to the 3DS eShop later this year. The gravity-flipping retro platformer has been around the indie scene for a while and is generally regarded as an innovative and very enjoyable ride: it's less about jumping and more about...

Now developer Nigoro has admitted the game will not be out in 2010, with its most sincere of apologies. As a result, we come to the conclusion we abandoned to release it in 2010.Because, it’s better to...

Unlikely to make it this year
When we heard that La-Mulana was finished, submitted and out this year we did a little jump for joy at the prospect of playing the underground adventure before 2011 rolls around. Now that seems unlikely, as the game has failed Nintendo's submission process. LA-MULANA was said “No good” by Nintendo, then it has...
Bish bash bosh
The long and arduous wait for La-Mulana will soon be over: the game is complete and has just been submitted to Nintendo for approval, as revealed on the La-Mulana developer blog.
