A group of game development studios, content creators and fans have joined forces in Brazil to launch their very own 'Nintendo Direct' tomorrow evening at 8pm Brasilia time (midnight in the UK, 4pm PT, 7pm EST).
The event - which is 100% unofficial - is designed to attract the attention of Nintendo and highlight the huge interest from Brazilian fans in having a more significant official presence in the country, with more games translated into Portuguese and a focus on the Brazilian games development scene. A website has been set up asking participating fans to use the hashtags #NindiesBR and #WeWantNintendo in order to demonstrate the passion of Brazilian gamers and content creators for the Japanese company and its output.
The 'Direct' presentation itself will be 20 minutes long and feature games from a host of indies from across the world including Chucklefish, JoyMasher, Matt Makes Games, QUByte Interactive and Aquiris to name just a few. Here's the full list according to the website:
Produced by YouTuber Rodrigo Coelho, the presentation will be broadcast with subtitles in nine langages (including English) and, according to the official blurb, promises to feature "25 national games available for the Nintendo Switch, and promises some surprises not yet officially announced".
It's wonderful to see passionate gamers, both fans and developers alike, joining together in a positive way. It can be easy to forget that not every country enjoys the continued presence of their favourite games company at the level some of us are accustomed to. We'll be watching the event eagerly to see what surprises it has in store - catch it tomorrow (Tuesday 16th July) at 4pm PT, 7pm EST, midnight in the UK and 1am CET (Wednesday 17th July).
Are you a Brazilian Nintendo fan looking forward to the presentation? What's the company's official presence like where you live? Let us know with a comment below.

Are they also going to reveal Blanka for Smash Bros. Ultimate?
Cute. But not official so no
They're also making a petition, sign it up if you can colaborate: https://www.change.org/p/queremos-nintendo-no-brasil-e-seus-jogos-em-portugu%C3%AAs-queremosnintendo
I literally changed my Nintendo account to UK so I could buy Dandara, a Brazilian game. We're very badly represented here. The only Nintendo distributed games officially in Brazilian Portuguese are Mario Run and Pokémon Go, and they obviously aren't developed by Nintendo itself, nor are in their platforms. Mario Kart does have European Portuguese, so there's at least that.
Its not about the games its abotu sending a message. As a brazilian I 100% support this idea to attract Nintendo's attention back to us.
Thank you so much for sharing This, we are trying our best to reach Nintendo so they can finally give us the attention we deserve. Looking forward to This direct 👀
Hope it helps all it can for Brazil. Best of luck!
Awesome news! I will be tuning in!
@dux
That’s brilliant. I hope Nintendo are paying attention, it’s amazing that such a big country is so badly neglected by them.
I will watch it just to give some support.
I'm italian and very well served by Nintendo, tbh
I'm Brazilian. Our main complaint is that we don't have an official reseller of Nintendo here, it is difficult to get the games, we pay more expensive and we don't have Nintendo games in portuguese. I joined this campaign of this news. Tnx for sharing this.
as a brazilian Nintendo fan, I could not be more excited about this! Brazil is one of the biggest gaming markets but yet Nintendo does not give us as much attention as Sony or Microsoft does, and even though it is changing slowly recently (we got a official site (with almost nothing in it) and a online store with a small number of titles (not even a eShop!)), we want some real presence, games in portuguese e official physical games. We are not begging anything, we are just sharing what we have and our wishes. If you feel bother about it, just don't watch it, but I bet you'd do the same in our position
Great Campaign, but sadly this wont be enough to make a super big impact.
We can always hope
Will it be in Portuguese? Because it will make it a bit hard to swallow, but I hope for some interesting things there, and it actually can be a Nintendo project like “nindie showcase for every country or something lol”
@Tantani yes it will... but there will be subtitles in 9 different languages, including english. I hope you guys watch it and give us some support!
@dux
How similar are European and Brazilian Portuguese? I am aware of substantial differences in pronunciation, word choice, and pronoun placement, but I'm wondering if intelligibility is an issue.
I'm always down to see more info about new games inbound for Switch, bring it oooonnnnnn!
@JamesJose7 yeah but we're not trying to change "world's problems", it's a petition for a company to sell better (and by that, more) in a specific market. It's not about fixing climate change or getting rid of prejudice or some other unattainable thing against big corporation's wishes. It's actually very much a pro-corporation and money petition, so.... they'll at least listen
@Papasophagus It's not intelligble, but different to the point that we effectively have to pause to understand some words and sentences, and if a Portuguese is speaking too fast, I can't understand (some people do though, it varies). That's mostly because anything invented after the independence in 1822 received a different translation for each country, so we have different words from everything from "bus" to "cell phone" (for videogames specifically, "screen", "console" and "press button X" are all different, for instance). We also have many words from Africa and native indigenous populations that aren't used in Portugal (for things like "cassava" and "passion fruit").
The weird thing is that in Portugal they've always been exposed to our TV series and soap operas (audiovisual production is much bigger here), so they mostly understand us just fine, and even incorporate some of our words in their vocabulary
BUT, anyway, Zelda for instance has never ever been translated to any form of Portuguese, nor has a mainline series Pokémon game
aren't video games taxed very heavely in brasil?
@AntiHero yes, that's why retailers importing physical Switch copies end up charging up to $30 more than the digital only official Nintendo Shop. But this Brazilian shop has a very limited selection of non-Nintendo distributed games. You can check it by yourself here: https://loja.nintendo.com.br
This Brazilian shop is getting better, but it used to took them months to release DLCs, for instance.
@ctrBruno subtitles is good
I will give it a watch, hope they will show something cool
Is Loomiarts a Brazillian developer? Squadron 51 looks soooo good! Seriously cannot wait for that game.
25? I thinked Chroma Squad, Horizon Chase and the beat'n up game was the only brasilian games. Hope you guys really have some to show.
@ctrBruno it is the same in Israel for now
we just got the official internet store lately and it isn’t full currently, but we got a physical store which is amazing and an e-shop will be up soon
I hope you guys will get the same new treatment as soon as possible and join the party of Nintendo
I really wish to see something like an Israeli Direct lol
I will watch your direct tomorrow to show the support and hopefully will see something interesting enough to buy
Good luck!
@Papasophagus you can somehow work it around but it's definitely not the same. I've learned English by myself on my early days so I could play Chrono Trigger, but I see almost everyone here struggling to deep dive into the games - my 6yo son for example. And since people have alternatives on other platforms, Nintendo is loosing it here. PlayStation, Xbox and Android Gaming are huge thing in Brazil, but my son's friends don't have a clue of who Mario is. Everyone has a smartphone, and it's cheap to start playing games on that platform due to price, access to Playstore and language support, specially kids.
Either way, I believe Nintendo has to be here to have the same appeal it had back on the 90's on this country and most importantly lower the prices as, otherwise people will continue on other platforms, specially in a poor country like Brazil.
Best of luck for the whole endeavor! I'll make sure to watch live. Hopefully it catches the attention of some higher-ups at Nintendo's marketing. I'm sure it all comes down to money, but clearly this shows that there's a market for it.
Life's always been difficult to Brazilian Nintendo fans.
The little amount of "representation" we do get here is subpar at best.
Sony and Microsoft are leaps and bounds ahead in that regard.
I’ll tune in. You’d think with the massive Japanese community in Brazil that Nintendo would care more about their fans.
@victordamazio who knows?
@Papasophagus the biggest problem is don't have an official resellers in Brazil. Because of this, the games are very expensive
@dux oh man that sucks I feel for you, I know that feeling where it seems everyone is being supported more. I always felt that way with so many games that would only get released in Japan.
Hope this thing goes well and Nintendo take notice and does something about it for you guys
@PetherSilva officials resselers never had a acessible price in Brasil. Only if nintendo manufacture here, the price could be good. And now, a manufacture here... I don't see this can happen anytime soon.
(Sarcastically) Wooooh, that SO going to work out right. There's gonna be totally NO LEGAL ISSUES WITH THIS!!!
@ctrBruno Brazilid one of Nintendo's biggest gaming markets? Really?
Awesome idea. I hope it is a good unofficial direct and that Nintendo answers positively.
The games anounced in this will be oficcial switch Brazilian Games, right?
As a Brazilian, i am hoping the best to my country. Nintendo needs to see that there is a market here. Few games have Brazilian Portuguese (I only remember Fortnite, Mighty Gunvolt Burst and Mother Russia Bleeds), and i think we deserve more representation.
Good luck to everyone!
@Kalmaro he said "Brazil is one of the biggest gaming markets", not "biggest Nintendo gaming markets"
@Kalmaro hard to say it precisaly, because most of the games and consoles sold here are inside the american numbers, but are countries which have a lot less nintendo gamers and have translations to those languages in the games. For example, in Europe, to beat Brazil French and United Kingdom sell more veery probably, but the the other countries of Europe not.
@MimoDX2 Oh! Okay, was confused for a second.
@RevampedSpider why?
Do you dislike TowerFall and Celeste?
Or maybe it's because the lead designer is not Brazilian... but actually the visuals for both games were made by MiniBoss, a Brazilian studio
Actually one of the members even has writing credits in Celeste
@Kalmaro Brasil/Brazil is a very massive country.
@dux wait... Why did you get so triggered over a joke? I don't have anything against what's happening. But since you asked. I do support what Brazil is doing. I just poked fun at how change.org never changes anything. The Nintendo Direct plan is way more effective.
Very interesting. The end of this article made me think about living in the US, and the things we take for granted. Im thinking outside of the stuff like food, clothing, water... Nintendo has ALWAYS been a presence in my life. I hope the fans in Brazil get The Powers That Be attention.
@JamesJose7 I'm not triggered, it's just a very passionate subject to me, sorry if I sounded rude. Yeah, I know petitions rarely if ever work, and the Independent Direct plan is better because it garners more attention, but they're the same conjoined plan in the end, and I'm supporting any side of it I can.
Nice!!! Illbe watching!!
@dux all power to you <3
Given who runs Brazil, I think that the people are focused on the wrong issue...
@outsider83 I'm a Brazilian visiting the US right now and I can tell you guys really do have a lot of options to choose from, not only about games, but mostly everything for affordable prices. Brazilians have nothing in terms of Nintendo and legislation is ridiculous here. Let's hope Nintendo can learn from Sony. They really made a market here!
@Link41 Agreed. And that's a sad fact for sure
@Link41 oh, don't worry, we're aware of who is "governing" us, but since, you know, an armed revolution and guillotines is kind of hard to rally people to sign up for, we're protesting his terrible decisions and waiting for the next three years and six months to pass as fast as possible
@Gravitron You are correct.
I'll give it a watch, sounds good.
@Papasophagus Ok,It's like you're English...
and every game is in spanish...
so you HAVE to learn spanish to play the games...
Then the industry grows up and you're like "Oh Sweet Now i can play Dubbed games!"
And later you see that every single game that you're about to play is dubbed in the most texas english accent that you can imagine... and there's like expressions and inside jokes that you can't understand cuz's not part of your culture...
And then you're like "Oh... I Think i'm going back to spanish because the voice actors are more experienced and i learned spanish so i understand part of the culture...
I'm fine..."
Turma da Mônica confirmada pro Smash!
I'm hoping there's a surprise from Chucklefish...hopefully an ambitious pixel art game.
