Nintendo Switch System Update

Since Nintendo Switch launched back in March 2017, the handheld hybrid console has received numerous firmware updates. As is standard for any piece of technology these days, these system updates have added new features, refined existing menu and User Interface elements, and provided an ever-more secure and stable platform for your video gaming pleasure.

Yes, the fabled 'stability' to 'enhance the user experience' is the usual line Nintendo uses to describe the more minor firmware updates to the Switch family of consoles, but occasionally the company will give a little more context for a system update and provide details of exact bugs that have been squashed or minor alterations made.

Below is a full list of Nintendo's system update notes going right back to the launch of Nintendo Switch in March 2017, as detailed in our regular news articles (and on Nintendo's website). Where applicable, we've included update information not specifically detailed by Nintendo, too, to provide you with as much information about the Switch's evolution as possible and let you find out which features were added in which update.

  • User nicknames that cannot be used will be replaced with “???” which can be updated from the profile settings.
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.

Dataminer and Twitter user OatmealDome shared some more details about this firmware update, revealing a focus on "the internals" of the system's operating system. Here's the full rundown:

Version 16.0.0 is out.

This update appears to be focused on the internals of the OS. The way the OS handles bad word checking was slightly redesigned. The code was moved into its own module seemingly to avoid unnecessary code duplication. The bad words database was also updated. Some rearranging has taken place and new words were added...Some system text was tweaked to fix typos and/or to improve phrasing.

The QR code in the header image for the “Got Questions About Nintendo Switch?” built-in news item for some regions was updated to use a HTTPS URL.

The HDMI logo in the legal notices section of System Settings was updated to remove the HDMI connector diagram.

And now, some internal stuff...
- The built-in browser was updated.
- New error messages were added.
- Nintendo has created a new certificate authority (“G4”). All existing Switch servers use certificates issued by Nintendo’s “G3” CA. (via @shutterbug20002)

Many OS modules were modified in this update. Changes can vary from simple recompiles with the latest SDK to actual modifications.

  • For more information, see How to Update the Dock Firmware.

“Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode” was added under Sleep Mode in System Settings.

  • When this setting is enabled, systems with wired internet connections will maintain internet connection even while in sleep mode. This allows for software and add-on content to download to the system while the system is in sleep mode.
    • The setting is enabled by default.
  • When this setting is disabled, the system will connect to the internet only periodically, which decreases power consumption and delays downloads while in sleep mode.

Note: Systems that are not updated to version 13.0.0 or later behave as if this setting is enabled.

The method to initiate “Calibrate Control Sticks” in System Settings was changed.

  • From System Settings, go to Controllers and Sensors, select Calibrate Control Sticks, then fully tilt the control stick in any one direction and keep it tilted for a few seconds to begin calibration.

Users can now view whether their wireless internet connection is using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band under “Connection Status” after selecting Internet in System Settings.

If you didn't update your console to Switch firmware Ver. 12.0.3, you no longer have the option to do so at the time of writing. We'll update this guide with more information as we get it.
