If you're hoping to find out exactly how all of the newly ported Resident Evil games run on Switch, you'll be pleased to know that the technical boffins over at Digital Foundry have examined each game in lovely video form.
Interestingly, Digital Foundry noticed that Resident Evil 4 runs at 900p when docked, as opposed to the PS4 version's 1080p, and playing in handheld sees a drop to 600p. The portable option does seem to offer better performance overall, however, with the frame rate, in particular, being considerably better in handheld. You can also see the Switch footage placed side-by-side with the game on PS4 and GameCube.
We'll let you watch the video in full to learn all about each game's performance, but we'll also share snippets from our Resident Evil Switch reviews below if you'd like to learn more about a specific title.
Resident Evil 4 - Full review
Resident Evil 4 is one of the best video games of all time, and if you’ve somehow managed to avoid it all these years, the Switch edition is a decent, convenient way to catch up – but the fact that the Wii Edition still has a legitimate claim as the 'definitive' version proves irksome. Handheld mode is the biggest draw here and that’s not only where the game’s ageing visuals work best, but also where its control scheme makes the most sense.
Resident Evil - Full review
In many ways, the first Resident Evil is – and can only ever be – a product of its time. Even when tuned and honed and buffed to perfection, it has its own idiosyncratic personality and ways; change them and you change the game. Cumbersome and horrifying in equal measure, it refuses to let you have your brains and eat them, so while series veterans will know what to expect, new players should prepare themselves for a schooling in game mechanics which have largely fallen out of fashion.
Resident Evil 0 - Full review
Various factors accumulate to take the shine off Resident Evil 0 in comparison to the original game, but the Switch version showcases it at its best, and even though it doesn’t reach the heights of 1 or 2, it provides a shot of old-school Resident Evil for those who like that sort of thing. It looks great on Switch and the ability to play on-the-go helps alleviate some of the frustrations inherent to its old-fashioned systems. Overall, it’s very much more of the same, but if that’s what you’re after, Resident Evil 0 ticks the requisite boxes nicely.

So we’re in an alternate universe now, where multiple old games are running at a more stable pace in handheld mode? ACreed, Saints Row, RE. What year is this?
Switch should have an option like PS4 pro where you can choose graphics or frame rate priority.
@HobbitGamer Yet still worse than their original releases from three systems ago, in the case of RE0.
@Trajan Seriously, it's what I liked about fire emblem warriors
Though it didn't matter since I always chose 60 fps.
Frame rate is ALWAYS more important to me.
Capcom have managed to be even more lazy then i originally thought. I don't expect to see a 'new' Monster Hunter for Switch either(I'd like to be wrong on that). They've done enough to suggest new games for the Switch is of no interest to them. Just charge a premium for old games and expect customers to be happy with scraps. I'll buy these games if/when they're the same price as other platforms AND if they do anything to improve performance and not before then.
I disagree with the aiming complaint on RE4. It seems just as easy as it was back on the Cube, once you change it the left stick (option 2 in the menu).
It is a relatively bare bones release though, and it would have been nice if they added some behind-the-scenes concept art or some documentaries for fans of the games. Too bad game publishers don’t do the same thing for classic games that a distributor like Criterion Collection does for classic films.
There's nothing wrong with any of the RE ports, us fans are just angry cause there are no physical version of these for the Switch. Taking away option is something we don't like Capcom.
I'll be getting these games but not any time soon. I'll be getting a Used copy of the physical Origins Collection with the DLC Game Unused when it's around $39.99 on Ebay. I'm buying used to make sure Capcom doesn't get a penny of my money.
This is such a joke.🙄 Couldn't even get full native resolution on a 13 years old game. No HD rumble, no motion aiming, no nothing, but a higher price than other versions.
Oh, but I can play it portable now!!!111!🥳
One of the three games is Physical @retro_player_22 but that's it.
@retro_player_22
What? Almost everything about them is wrong.
@PlayedNSlayed what do you mean in terms of a new monster hunter? I didn’t get the reference - does it run good or bad? I got it in my back log just intrigued to know
Not managing 1080p is a big problem. I don't know how it's defensible. Basically every tv at the store over 40 inches is 4k. I might as well just hook my switch up to my old 720p tv in my basement (where I only go to do laundry) and call it a day.
Capcom doing the absolute bare minimum again. The PS3 version was similar, all they did was upscale the graphics to 720p and kick it out the door. Now they’ve managed to make it all the way to 900p. They put more effort into the Wii version.
While ports are generally very welcome (IMO) some recent ones, and plenty of Capcoms, do serve to give them a bad name.
Race to the bottom. Publishers will keep pushing see how little work they can do and still make a profit off the base.
@sixrings it’s not that big of an issue... the TVs have settings you can adjust...
@nintendoPLAYROOM maybe it isn't a big deal to you. But they will upscale it to 4k 5 years from now and resell it to me. I have a problem with that. I'd like my games not to look dated a couple years after buying them. When ps5 xbox two comes out these games are going to look like museum pieces. So to me and others it is a big deal. Sorry we aren't all satisfied with getting ports no matter how shabby they are.
lol...600p. LMAO
Oh look at that, another lazy port by lazy developers, gasp!
So glad I passed on Switch. Resident Evil 2 (the new one) on my 4k Bravia paired with the One X has been fantabulous.
@MrBlacky "Oh, but I can play it portable now!!!111!🥳"
Dude, you'd be surprised at how many switch owners actually use that line right there, non jokingly, as justification for all these shortcomings of the console.
@hihelloitsme
This is a Capcom problem, not a Switch problem.
@hihelloitsme Then why are you wasting your time commenting on Switch articles?
@hihelloitsme
What shortcomings? The Switch is one of the best consoles and one of the most versatile. It's small, very silent and can put out decent graphics (decent enough for me).
What's getting on my nerve is, that the media and many players are saying: Cool, this or that game portable now. I don't need or want more!"
Wow, and people were saying that Switch could totally run Re2make. XD
Cya
Raziel-chan
@hihelloitsme It is insane.
It is like I say "I do not want to eat garbage"... so they take it out the trash put it in a Zip-Lock bag and say "Well, but now you can eat it on the Bus" 🙄
But I do not blame the Switch. This is on the publishers, that now think they can get away with anything.
I really, really hope they release RE:Code Veronica X
I have a PS4 Pro. I use the Switch to play games on the go and to play Nintendo exclusives. These games look awesome on Switch. I think people are really nitpicking here. The only thing that Capcom needs to do is lower the price to $20 on these, and I would scoop these up again (as I have the PS4 versions).
@Dman10 great. I have a Xbox one x. That doesn't mean I don't want to use my switch mainly docked. I was sold a hybrid not a portable
@sixrings exactly it's delivering more handheld with some games even docked.... that 4gb ram doesn't cut it doesnt dear peopele. N went cheap route and yet system 300 euro. Ps4 8gb and i know bla bla bla but in a time like 4gb is just not acceptable. But I also understand why they did it.. WII U wasn't really a hit also due very low hardware specs for a machine that came out way later than xbox 360 and PS3. It was a letdown. Only 1st party games were good, but those were too few and system went dead and Nintendo this time a better upgrade and earlier a next system. I understand also N is more focused on children and that's kind of system they are offering. For older gamers we might have more issiues with these stuff while a child will just enjoy the game. N is surely a brand for children and the first players (most of older croud) we just expect more
Gamecube didn't feel that long ago and nintendo had the best hardware. The system bombed but for multiple reasons. Nintendo being hard for third parties to work with. Funny disc sizes. Lack of real Internet. Strange controller even if nintendo fans love it. The system coming in purple and appearing like a child toy. Everyone wants to point to the power but the system failed for other reasons. Since then though everything nintendo does is significantly weaker. Can we just get a pro at the same specs basically as a ps4 and upres the games from dynamic scaling.
@sixrings games are going to age regardless. Technology changes and there will even come a time when your precious 1080p will look dated somehow.
@nintendoPLAYROOM my precious 1080p can at least upscale correctly. It's cool you're ok with whatever graphics but you don't need to be condescending today those looking for relatively modest standards in their games graphics. If they didn't matter so much I wouldn't have upgraded to 4k and I'd still be playing nes/snes/n64 on a crt instead of investing in anewconsole.
For those complaining about the Switch not preforming as well as a dedicated console; if you have a Switch, pull off the joycon, take the tablet, and just set it next to your current console of choice. Notice the size difference? Of course it's not going to output the same level of graphics a PS4 or Xbox One can. For those of us who don't have all the time in the world to sit tethered to our living room TV, we don't mind compromising a little. If that's not you, buy your multiplatform software on something more powerful.
I do agree that these games are priced too high, but I'll gladly pick them up when they're heavily discounted. I also wish they had taken the time to add in motion controls. It may yet be patched in though.
I dont get the problem, other than the high price on three ports. But RE4 and Re Remake runs almost as good as the PS4/Xbox counterpart, and adds sellingpoint in being portable.
AU$120, digital only, and requires about 45GB of storage?
Where do I sign up?
Seriously though, I would have paid up to AU$60 each for physical versions. RE4 is especially problematic without the much-loved motion controls from the Wii version. On a similar note, I would love a port of Bully, but lack of motion controls would be a dealbreaker. I can't imagine the game being as much fun anywhere else as it was on Wii. Such a criminally underrated gem.
I'm not complaining about the lack of 1080p for this game specifically. I can play this game on my Xbox one x. But the system is flat out underpowered. As a result nintendo first party games often are not 1080p. That to me is a issue since I can't exactly buy those games for my Xbox. Odyssey, zelda, yoshi, bayonetta 2, mario aces.... so people here are claiming the problem is capcom is lazy which is why the game isn't optimized. Sure that could possibly be an answer. But is nintendo lazy as well with their games and bayonetta port? Even if laziness was the true answer then guess what would help. A more powerful system which wouldn't demand so much optimizing.
@hihelloitsme
“you'd be surprised at how many switch owners actually use that line right there, non jokingly, as justification for all these shortcomings of the console.”
Why would anybody be surprised at this? Portability is a huge deal for a lot of people. That’s why portable games systems have always sold so much and why Nintendo portables usually outsell most rival Home Systems. 5 of the 11 best selling systems ever, and 2 of the Top 3, are portables.
I can’t believe I’m having to tell people this stuff.
@Alucard83
“I understand also N is more focused on children and that's kind of system they are offering. For older gamers we might have more issiues with these stuff while a child will just enjoy the game. N is surely a brand for children and the first players (most of older croud) we just expect more”
Is this a joke post? Because it doesn’t seem very clued up about the number of adults who value portability vs the number of angry men children squealing about resolutions on the tethered Consoles they play in their parents bedrooms.
Clever stuff.
@sixrings
“Gamecube didn't feel that long ago and nintendo had the best hardware”
Second best that Generation.
@HexagonSun

Again, it’s astonishing that over two years after the system launched, you’re having to try and explain this to some people.
@electrolite77 it's such a simle solution though that both playstation and xbox have figured out. Offer a more expensive model for those who care. I haven't heard anyone here argue for 4k. All some of us want is 1080p 60fps. I'm happy that some people like portable gaming but really for me and others it does very little in comparison to a living room experience. So we who like docked mode are suppose to just suffer. That's silly. It's 2019. All sorts of things come with options. The switch should as well. I'm willing to pay for it.
It's not about multiplatform games. It's about nintendo games not running properly on a nintendo console because the system isn't powerful enough.
Zelda, odessey yoshi, mario aces...
Anyone remember when MHGU was ported over to the Switch, i said that this will be all we get from Capcom because Capcom isn't interested in supporting the Switch, i think there are a few reasons for this. But the main one i think is...
1 is the timing of the Switch release and in particular BOTW, before the Switch came out, Capcom president wanted Nintendo's new console to be more powerful, this didn't pan out and when the Switch was released, Capcom were very unsupportive and didn't expect anything like what actually happened. this totally ruined their big comeback into the forefront of video game development with MHW, and their reintroduction into AAA games (they were staying afloat on the 3DS for years before MHW changed their fortunes)... but the game was planned to be released in 2017, not Jan of 2018, the reason for the delay was simply BOTW. The instant BOTW hit the market it had already won every award that year had to offer. This hurt Capcom, they didn't plan to support the Switch but by the end of 2017 they had little option, the console was too big to ignore and so they rushed a lame port of MHGU, with more lame ports to follow, most being digital only, which further proves their laziness in doing anything meaningful.
Now this is just my speculations but i think Capcom was annoyed that 2017 was Nintendo's year ( had BOTW not been released in 2017 and MHW was alone, it would have won Goty) and more than likely further frustrated that 2018 also wasn't their year, coupled with them totally misreading their own home market when it came to power and handheld plus the global popularity of the Switch, which they didn't prepare for.
This further proves at least to me that there is a semblance of truth in my speculations, expect more of the same from Capcom
@electrolite77 by the way I'm married. With kids. My own house. And again those who are content with anything are trivalizing and mocking those who are demanding more. If you are just content with the bare minimum these companies will give you exactly that.
@sixrings
And they might launch a more powerful version. I’ll probably get one. But I’m utterly bored of the endless complaining from people upset that Nintendo’s Plan-which is working very well-wasnt entirely designed to suit them and their obsession with resolution.
Which incidentally is the same posters trivialising and mocking others using phrases like ‘those who are content with anything’ or ‘It's cool you're ok with whatever graphics but you don't need to be condescending today those looking for relatively modest standards’ or ‘N is surely a brand for children and the first players (most of older croud) we just expect more’ as if the critical judgement of the resolution obsessive is somehow superior. If they don’t want to be condescended to they shouldn’t do it to others.
If we were resolution obsessed we would have given up on nintendo completely. We accept a lower quality. The debate is what is good enough. We have different definitions of whats acceptable but I'm equally tired of hearing the excuses from nintendo fans which act as if graphics don't matter and those that care aren't real fans or are graphics demons.
@sixrings
Id say its not underpowered, its powered enough to give an appealing experience in both handheld and docked mode in 99 out of 100 games. If its really importent with strictly 60fps1080p, people wouldnt buy consoles at all. Sub-full HD and 30fps are common with PS4 and Xbox too.
I dont think a majority would even notice the difference between 900p and 1080p, or be bothered that games have uneven framerates between 24-30fps or 40-60 fps. For most, its not a big deal as long as it keeps above the obvious pain treshold that only a few Switch games reaches where they renders at 480p or less.
Playing multiplattform games like RE4 on Switch is not something like a generation leap backwards compared to PS4/Xbox cause it renders at 900p instead of 1080p. Its more like the difference between Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the same games 8 years ago, when it was more common with quality difference between versions.
@RasandeRose respectfully I understand what you're saying because a lot of my Xbox one games don't run at 1080p on the base model. But were really comparing apples to oranges because the graphics of the games are much more intense. For instance tomb raider is significantly more intensive then say breath of the wild. Like you say we should be comparing the switch to 360 ps3. But even that I was told that the switch was more powerful than the Wii u which was more powerful than both those consoles. Even when we compare the switch to those consoles we sometimes see the switch fail. This is a problem. I can't speak for everyone but like I've said countless times on here the closer to 1080p the better my tv scales to 4k and I am fortunate enough to be using a samsung qled tv. If my good tv upscales not the best good luck with some cheaper 4k model. Finally if you read the digital foundry comment section you would read many people have the same disappointed feelings from the switch and equally would be ecstatic for a pro model. Again I haven't heard anyone ask for a 4k system but these 360 ports and nintendo first party games should be at the very least 1080p.
@sixrings
Games like Tomb Raider sure has more intense graphics, even the last gen Tomb Raider. Its easy because its not open world, it doesnt have to stream even a fraction as much as a game like Botw and it doesnt have as much physics, most of the levels are static or the physic evens are pre-rendered.
You must understand that most comments about framerates and resolutions are fanboy based. Most gamers wont care about how 900p contra 1080p scales to 4k and most of them who writes 100 comments about how that or that console is better because higher resolution and more teraflops, doesnt really care and wouldnt really notice the difference if they didnt watch side-by-side comparisons. Thats why Xbox One X has so low sales compared to PS4 and Switch - the performance sellingpoint doesnt interest that many as the difference to a base PS4 still is minor.
"Should be" lol.
Yes they're great titles! Can we have a new Mega Man Battle Network game for the Nintendo Switch? I really like this tech game because I have a background in computer and really enjoyed playing some of the games on the Wii U. Please Capcom?
