Area 35 has confirmed that its Advance Wars-inspired turn-based title Tiny Metal will be getting its multiplayer update sometime in May as a free download.
The feature had previously been promised by the studio, and it has also been confirmed that the mode will be available to the press at the upcoming PAX East. Sadly, the public will not be able to go hands-on.
We reviewed Tiny Metal back in December, and gave it a glowing 9/10, saying:
Newton once attributed his remarkable discoveries in the realms of mathematics, astrology and theology to the fact that he was "standing on the shoulders of giants"; his outstanding work was only possible because of the geniuses that came before him. The same could be said of Tiny Metal; it may be light on original ideas, but it's a towering achievement regardless.

Yes! Lack of multiplayer was the most glaring flaw... Purple prose in cutscenes can be skipped, but that one part was what stopped me from recommending this game further.
Now the questions is if hot seat is going to be available and how will it work with FoW (or will they disable it, but the game seems pretty reliant on FoW, unlike Advance Wars).
Fog of war was easy to beat when all you had to do was check the area with an available units movement cursor, if your cursor arrow couldn't be placed in what appeared to be an empty spot an enemy was there while in Advance Wars your couldn't tell if an enemy was in your intended path.
Just beat this the other day and I would say it's a solid game! It more then scratched that Advance Wars itch.
@MegaMari0 Yeah I did notice that difference as well. My son also found out you could find the secret Intel bases by searching the fog. It would come up ????
@MegaMari0 It definitely helps in New Game+ with the hidden Strikers all over the place... But I still can't proceed past Tatara's End on NG+. I feel that even if I did manage to call on Dante I would still struggle.
So is the game worth $25?
@JJ286 if they added a War Room type mode in addition to the promised multiplayer, yes. Otherwise it's really worth 20 bucks to me. Just my 2 cents.
I’ve been wanting to like this but I’ve been taken back by the art style. I loved Advance Wars and I have appreciated all the changes made to this. Should I buy?
The true question... Online Multiplayer?
I didn't even realize that this game was out!?
The game was pretty barebones at launch to be sure and I honestly lost interest pretty quick. The characters and story are very bland. Also something about the art style makes the game kinda ugly to my eyes. The units don't stand out against the environment enough. Multi-player is something a game like this really should have had at day 1 too. I doubt I will pick this game back up. I'd rather wait for Wargroove or keep dreaming of either a new Advance Wars, or a port of any of the GBA or DS games.
@Taro Honestly, I would suggest waiting for Wargoove. Tiny Metal lacks the polish and quality of Advance Wars by a lot.
@Heavyarms55
Thanks man Wargroove looks awesome
@Taro It does! I have been looking forward to it since the first video. A true love letter to Advance Wars and from what I read on their blog, a natural evolution and expansion of those games.
@Taro I found it good enough and the rebalancing patch did improve the game. But without multiplayer it really is an incomplete product, especially as the option is right there in the main menu with a "coming soon" under it.
I agree that units could use a little visual variety. Some hero units have special models and some don't (like the Metal hero unit). The Snipers in particular should probably look different from basic Riflemen, like wear ghillie suits or boonie hats or coats like Wolfram, as their extra defense supposedly comes from camouflage.
The game lacks some extra depth from Advance Wars (like fuel, ammo, weapon types or Navy and Transport units), but it is good enough for an indie clone. I like Focus Fire and Assault options, the latter being very good at stopping enemy infantry from capturing buildings and getting them into open terrain.
Definitely filled the time waiting for WarGroove nicely.
Are people still mad about the swindling Kickstarter money? I personally don't care for the controversy, but it seems as if people have quieted down, which is nice.
@MegaMari0 Alright, I'll wait for a price drop of 20% then.
Thanks!
Lol the controversy has died down as the scammer has gone radio silence on the PP Kickstarter. Both the PP official website and the sham company Creative Intelligence Arts website have been down for 5-6 weeks now. Yura says it is due to a outdated WordPress system on his TM steam forum but till now, no official update on Kickstarter to explain the issue and for why there has been such a delay in getting the website back up. Good luck expecting multiplayer to hit within the timeline stated. From what we backers have gone through his timelines are as unreliable as pre pubescent girl
Years later I can say I love this game
