Welcome to our complete story walkthrough of Super Mario RPG on Nintendo Switch and SNES.

You're looking for the sixth Star Piece in Super Mario RPG, but it's nowhere to be found! Nowhere on the ground, that is, which is why Mario and company are heading upward. In order to do that, though, they must make it through Bean Valley.

Here’s our guide on Bean Valley, how to ascend the beanstalk, and how to make it to Nimbus Land.

Bean Valley Enemies

Pleaseno / Box Boy

An upgraded treasure chest enemy with some devastatingly strong spells. It takes increased damage from Mario’s Super Jump attack, so try to land as many as possible!

Jinnie / Fautso

Summoned by Box Boy every so often. It’s weak against Mallow’s Snowy attack, so use it to make short work of it.

Chomp Chomp

There's only one of these, but they're not to be underestimated. They're weak to thunder, meaning Mallow can take them out easily.

Big Troopa / Heavy Troopa

These guys appear on the way to Nimbus Land and take two turns to charge up an attack. They have a small chance to drop a Bracer / Crystalline, an item that will come in handy later.

Birdy

They go down rather easily to Mallow’s Thunderbolt spell. Otherwise, just use physical moves here.

Bean Valley Walkthrough

Bean Valley contains lots of enemies, though you’ve seen most of them before. We’d recommend a party setup of Mario, Mallow, and Peach to effectively fight them off. If you managed to get the Troopa Medal / Troopa Pin accessory from the last section, remember to equip it on Mario as it drastically increases his stats.

As a reminder, the Stinger enemies here are great for experience and leveling up. They often drop Flowers which let you have an extra turn and will no doubt help you clear the enemies faster.

Hidden Treasure 31 - East pipe

Start by taking the pipe to the east. In this area, walk all the way west to a corner and jump to uncover a Hidden Treasure chest with a Frog Coin. Enter the other pipe in this area.

Take the southern pipe for a treasure box containing a Flower and then go back through the pipe. Take the northwest exit to appear in a room full of pipes.

Hidden Treasure 32 - Piranha Plant pipe #1

Defeat the Piranha Plant in the lower-right pipe and enter it. Play the slot machine and then jump into the left corner for another Hidden Treasure, this time containing a Croaka Cola / Kerokero Cola.

In the top right pipe is a Treasure Box containing a particularly nasty enemy! It’s weak against Mario’s Jump attacks but can dish out tons of damage. Good thing you have Peach in your party because you’ll certainly be needing her healing magic. At this point, she should have the Come Back skill that works like a Pick Me Up by reviving the chosen party member. It’s a tough fight, but you do at least earn lots of coins for winning.

Hidden Treasure 33 - Piranha Plant pipe #2

In the southeast corner of this room, defeat another Piranha Plant and then jump down to uncover another Surprise Box. This one has Red Essence inside of it, and that's the last surprise box in Bean Valley!

From here, exit the pipe and then head north to find a save block. Make sure you’ve got Safety Rings or Trueform Pins equipped before you continue.

Leave the pipes and then head north out of the area, where you’ll notice a Beezo watering a Piranha Plant. As it turns out, this one is actually a boss!

Boss - Megasmilax

That's... just a Piranha Plant, right? Sort of. This isn't too tough a fight, but head on over to our How To Defeat Megasmilax guide if you need some help.

When Megasmilax is defeated, the Shy Away will drop a Seed, which you'll need to get Mario's Best Weapon. Take it and then go down the pipe.

Climbing the beanstalk

On the next screen, hit the block here to grow a huge beanstalk. You’ll ascend to a cloudy area, and from here you can jump onto the vine and keep climbing.

Once you get to the blue beanstalk, you can jump off for a free Frog Coin and then get right back to climbing. The red vine in the next area has a treasure chest containing a Flower, whereas the one to the right is the way forward.

The orange vine on the left has another Frog Coin, so collect it if you like. If you’re interested, keep climbing up the orange vine and then complete the next area for a Frog Coin and a Defense Scarf / Rare Scarf accessory. It’s a tough jumping challenge. Head back down and climb the green vine in the previous area when you want.

Eventually, you’ll make it to two trampolines. The one on the left takes you to Nimbus Land, while the one on the right takes you back to the world map. Hop on the leftmost springboard to finally make it to Nimbus Land, the presumed location of the next Star Piece for your collection.
