I recently got an SP AGS-101 to replace my missing SP AGS-001. I picked up Tetris for the Game Boy and noticed that when I played it on the 101 it was in color. Is this normal? Excuse me for being a little ignorant when it comes to Game Boy games on the GBA SPs. I've never played one on the SP before.
When you play any game boy game on anything that displays color, it automaticly adds colors. They can sometimes be a little off, but it would be fne for tetris. Try looking up a few screens of Link's Awakening (original and DX) and compare the two.
Any original Game Boy Game will display in one of twelve different standard palettes depending on a combination of button presses while the game loads up. Some games such as Metroid II have their own palettes already set.
Thanks for the Geonjaha! What would the original palette be if no buttons are pressed, or is it game dependent?
One of those twelve palettes gets used if you press no buttons (Unless of course it has its own custom palette), but I'm not sure whether or not its always the same one or game dependant. Doesn't matter too much though, because its all up to you.
It is a really cool feature. Used to play GB games on my GBC. So Pokemon Red actually had red in it for me. Also, I wish Nintendo would put that option to add color to the GB games on the virtual console. They have the option to make the screen "yellowed" but it would be cool to see them have a GBC mode type thing in original GB games too.

Most games will use the (I think) Up+A combination in the chart above.
However, Nintendo programmed the GBC to detect most Nintendo-published games and give them a preset palette.
