Topic: Nintendo switch stopped reading the micro SD card

My Switch has the SD card since day 1 and it never had a problem until now. We never took the card out of the console before. The switch suddenly doesn't recognise the SD card. I tried putting that same SD card into my new Switch-Lite and it recognised the card and proceeded with an update. The Lite even tried to reset the SD card but I did not proceed with the reset. When I tried the same SD card back on the original Switch, it still doesn't recognised the SD card is in the console.

Means failed card plain and simple. Backup that data onto your computer from the sd card and buy a new one. Once it can't reset or reformat that the end of the sd card. And if you bought a cheap brand then expect it to not last. Sandisk from official sites like Amazon and not some knockoff will insure your sd card last long time. I bought many Sandisk sd cards and they worked just one only one in my smart phone went bad after all these years using Sandisk sd cards and that was 128gb card. My two 400gb on Switches have no issue since I installed them. I am waiting for the 1tb to get less to upgrade to that. So if that card isn't in Warranty then your options are to buy a new one and copy the old data to PC and copy back to the new one and format and use the new one.

But just try another SD Card before contacting Nintendo, @newSwitcher ..Or try shutting down your switch for a full reboot to have another try.

Since your card is working with another Switch, it‘s likely an hardware issue.

@Nutella That's not true and misleading here. They should use sd card reader and see if the PC can see or read it. That will be the test if it still works. I do know from experience failed card can still read but can't write or format them.

The existing SD card was able to be read from a Switch-Lite, MAC and Windows Desktop.
I was able to reformat the SD card. The formatted SD card is now working fine in the Switch-Lite but the original Switch still does not recognize it.
I also tried another SD card on the orig-Switch and it doesn't recognise that card either.
Hence, I am sure the issue is in the card reader but I am reluctant to send it to Nintendo by post because repair cost may not be covered under warranty (out of official warranty period & no longer have original receipt but only photo).
Other than the SD card issue. The Switch is working fine, I just won't be down loading new games from online store.

Then the card has failed. If the card reader can't see or access the sd then it's time for the trash heap.

@newSwitcher
Since you have tried the orig SD card in another switch and PC etc and that works BUT another sd card in the original switch also doesn't work it, have you tried cleaning the sd card slot on the orig switch ??
May be just a case of some lint or dust blocking the contacts ??
Other wise there is a Factory Reset option under Settings (System - Formatting Options), which is a last ditch attempt (you would lose everything) but might help to reload "drivers" for the sd card slot.
Otherwise I agree with Woomy_NNYes and give Nintendo Support a call.

@nzretro How are you going to do that unless you dissemble it and Voiding any Warranty? Want to tell people this before just saying things without consequences here. They should use a vacuum with small vent to suck out any dust if there is any but since they never took it out then that invalidates that problem already. If the sd card can't be read in a PC sd card reader or access that is proof of corrupted card or failed card. And since there is no mentioned what kinda card and where they bought it then is means failed card in the end. Let's not tell them to do Factory Reset as this isn't the problem unless your will to pay to fix the problem you created and restore all their lost data. This isn't a System issue but a sd Card failure problem so don't give misleading information unless you can show otherwise on your system not their system should your reset fail and they can't recover their system saved game data.

@SwitchForce
"misleading information" ?????
You need to put up or shut up.
Try reading the posts

Read his post: it said
"I also tried another SD card on the orig-Switch and it doesn't recognise that card either."
SO Two sd cards tried and both failed BUT those sd cards read ok in a switch lite AND pc/mac
ALSO:
"The existing SD card was able to be read from a Switch-Lite, MAC and Windows Desktop.
I was able to reformat the SD card. The formatted SD card is now working fine in the Switch-Lite but the original Switch still does not recognize it."

Seems like a hardware issue to me BUT your brain can not comprehend that can it.

NO WHERE did I say to "disassemble" the device. ANY b?????ly idiot knows not to do that HOWEVER I think you like to jump the gun and think BETTER than yourself.
Do you not think that dust and grim can not make the way into the card slot ??.
YOU nor I do not know what he does with the switch, how he uses it etc.

READ the post and stop making half ______ calls.

Put it this way. If its NOT a SD card issue and he rings Nintendo what do you think they are going to say.
They will know doubt ask to clean the slot first and "perhaps" do a factory reset to see if that solves it. Other wise send it in and they will not guarantee that any data will be retained.

And to say "this isn't the problem unless your will to pay to fix the problem you created"
WHAT Problem
I said " last ditch attempt (you would lose everything)"
Again NOT READING the posts are you !!!

I have decided to call you : ____________

Just read you other posts .......You seem to be an opinionated TROLL.
Sitting down in the basement tapping away furiously on the keyboard, vein in the forehead (if you have one) bulging away. spewing out the dribble. Mummy upstairs calling for little johnny to come take is bath...

Bye Bye Troll

Any better ?? Or more editing.

Honestly I'm done with these places. Seems they get overrun with theses types of people.
I had to have my say !!
I'm 53 and don't put up with the bs anymore. Been playing games since Computer Space and Pong.

@nzretro Yeah, better.

Yeah, here and there, as you've seen, comments & egos can muddy progress toward a solution, or worse. And sometimes it's users you've seen do it before. I find it surprising how many people make an account here to ask technical questions that don't know how good Nintendo's own support site or phone line are, and don't realize what a gamble it is to get help in a forum.

At one point I used the ignore button on a user, or two, that tended to skew toward trolling, and I didn't need more negativity in my life. A couple months later, I un-ignored them because, I'd seen them actually help in some threads. If you do see someone troll, you can use the report button. I don't think normal people like to use it, but unfortunately, nice forums don't stay cool by chance.

Thanks again for helping me the other day, my friend!

@nzretro That user is just like that; just like real life, some people act rude.
You do you.
I don’t think it’s the card, either for what it’s worth. Do you have a small spare laying around?
