Ever since Sonic Generations introduced to concept of there being a Classic and Modern Sonic, it made me wonder what was the last Classic game to come out before the first Modern game. It seems that Classic Sonic only relates to the games from the 90s, so would it be safe to say Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure (December 20, 1999) is the last Classic game and Sonic Adventure 2 (June 19, 2001) is the first modern game? If so, then it would be weird to think that Sonic Adventure 1 (November 27, 1998) is a Classic game, but the second one isn't. What do you think?
I thought they separated them by difference in design(how the characters look not gameplay) like how in Sonic Adventure Amy was changed completely, and the others were give slight to dramatic redesigns(Eggman) because if its based on gameplay wouldn't Sonic the Hedgehog 4 be a classic game due to being the direct sequel to Sonic 3/Knuckles and chronologically(I'd assume) taking place before Sonic Adventure even though they use a modern design and similarly able Sonic though actually coming out years after?
Capcom at E3: Guys we're sorry about how we've been treating Mega Man so we're gonna make it up to you by releasing the Mega Man Cancelled Collection with all the titles we cancelled in the condition they we're in just before we pulled the plug. Now who wants Street Fighter X Monster Hunter?
Modern Sonic started with green eyes on a taller Sonic and Classic Sonic ended with the last game where he was smaller and had black eyes. I think Modern Sonic started with Sonic Adventure but I'm not sure...

Is this Classic or Modern?
Well in the gameplay and most of the sprite work aspect its classic but in cover art (and a few other sprites I believe its been awhile since I played this) its modern. Can't really be sure.

@WhiteNoise17 - I've thought about it, and it seems that only in the games where Sonic has green eyes count as modern, because Classic Sonic doesn't have green eyes. His model in Sonic Adventure has green eyes, so he counts as modern.
With that in mind, it would seem that Sonic Blast (December 12, 1996) is the last Classic Sonic game to come out before Modern Sonic, but oddly, it also seems that it came out after Sonic 3D Blast (November 1, 1996) according to Wikipedia.

The last Classic platformer seems to be Sonic 3D Blast.

Since Zelda got a timeline made SEGA should make one for Sonic only coherent.

They would literally never manage to make that coherent, especially with Sonic Generations. Besides, I've always seen Sonic as being similar to Mario in that it doesn't really need continuity. It's just that Sonic tries to have a story and then ignores continuity while Mario doesn't even try to have a story and is potentially better off without it. (Just look at all the hate Sunshine got for its story and voice acting.)
