A term used for games that are a bit like Metroid and a bit like Castlevania.
What does that mean? No one seems to know. Some say Metroidvanias need to be side-scrolling platformers with an emphasis on exploration. Others say anything with ‘backtracking’ and ‘gating’ mechanics qualifies (though this would seem to include everything but the most strictly linear games).
This lack of agreement on what the term actually means doesn’t seem to stop us using it liberally. Every other game announced seems to be declared a ‘Metroidvania’. Whether this betrays a lack of imagination on behalf of those designing the games, or those describing them, I’m not sure. Perhaps both.
Anyway, here’s a fun exercise. Let’s rename music genres in this way and see what we come up with.
Classic rock? Not any more:
Ledpurple
Grunge? Sorry, it’s:
Stonejam
K-pop? More like:
BTF(X)
Pop punk? I think you mean:
Sumday41182
Blues? That’s:
FreddalBBertkingkingking
I’m sure you get the idea. Let’s get rid of the stuffy labels of old and come up with some nice new genre tags that are in no way convoluted or confusing.
@Royalblues
I would think blues and country artists would have a thing to say about that.
Robert Johnson's stuff is not jazz-like in the slightest.
Also church music.
Anyways RideTines for shoegaze
MaryKane for noisepop
MinorDu for hardcore punk
PopPIL for postpunk
Edit: Nurse With Wound's first album contained a list of recommended recordings - some possibly made up. So some more esoteric record shops / mail order have a NWW List section.
Everyone knows that there is only two genres of music: country, and western
Oh, there are a lot of music genres.
Eurobeat Euro Trance Eurodance Euro House Hardcore Trance Happy Hardcore 2 Steps Goa Trance Psy Trance Medieval Choir Dark Progressive Techno Rave Cyber Trance Funk Pop Punk Metal Speedy Classical
etc.
@Royalblues - aha! This is properly going back to 19thC stuff - music hall, vaudeville, sheet music songs. I think ragtime might have it's roots in that.
Popular music history is wonderfully knotty
Blues is folk-based, I think, along with gospel/church roots (think I'm on very dodgy ground here...). Yeah, country is an offshoot iirc, with RnB-inflected country (or was it the other way round?) becoming hillbilly, then rockabilly, then part of rock n roll.
I'm sure that jazz originated in New Orleans, but as with blues it'll be difficult to find the first examples
@Maxz Oh I'm taking this seriously, I'm so using Slayerica to describe thrash from now on!
It's just a shame Slayerica as a genre is more of a product of the 80s so I can't really use it much anymore. It was that silly LimpPark fad which didn't last that almost killed it but killswicthbreed type bands seem to be the standard now.
