Alright, SoM has been purchased. I still had the SNES and cart back at my parents' house, in a box I never organized when moving out, but I don't know if it still works. It probably does, but more importantly, I don't feel like having multiple systems plugged in everywhere. There was no resisting Secret of Mana... I knew I'd cave sooner or later, so I just went ahead and bought it. No time to start it yet, but it's next on my list after DQIV on the DS.
Anyone else surprised at how few blocks the game takes up?
Hah, yeah. I didn't even notice that the SF title was on the MegaDrive. That's pretty funny. (and slick on Nintendo's part) Another MD title to add to the list, yet it slides by without offending folks, thanks to SoM.
/edit/ - I enjoyed SoM more than any Zelda game. Between the weapon level-ups, game setting & world, and 3-player possibilities, it's a slam dunk title.
I've never seen of the game before now, but I can sympathize with fans. What if they screwed around with 8-bit Megaman? (aside from making him a lighter blue... which is the case in MM9)
There's no way I'm buying the collection, due to its bass-ackwards control scheme. I'd rather play it correctly via VC.
Megaman 3 has music ranging from great to meh, and if I recall from playing it yeeeaars ago, I never liked it as much as 2. Still glad to see it hit the VC though, and hope it comes to the US sooner rather than later.
Concrete Man is the only boss I've managed to beat. Tornado Man's stage was easy enough to finish without one death, but I proceeded to fail in his boss lair. Oh well.
Great game so far. Gloriously difficult, painstakingly thorough in its recreation, and lovingly tuned in 8-bit majesty.
I had forgotten how much I love this game. Darn that Dragon in Wily's first stage. Lousy blocks... ...and those lousy Orbs that hide behind Crash-vulnerable walls. Not a big fan of newer Megaman, but I love the older stuff. Also not a big fan of switching A/B buttons for jumping/shooting, so there's no way I'm getting the collection.
Mana on VC would essentially be a way of printing $8 bills. (what with all of us 20 & early 30-somethings having loved it years ago) No idea why they wouldn't release it here eventually.
Then again, I could name a few other money-printing-class titles that haven't seen the light of day on VC.
There aren't many N64 games on the VC because there aren't many bona fide 'classics' on the system itself, IMO. It had its breakthroughs, like SM64 & Zelda, etc, but it's essentially the console that pushed me towards exclusively PC gaming. (I skipped the whole 'Cube console generation) I think most folks claiming the supposed awesomeness of the N64 were very young at the time, and missed out on the full-on glory of the NES/SNES (or earlier) eras.
To me, it's like Nintendo's awkward teenage console years. Necessary, experimental, lots of potential, but ultimately lead to better & brighter things. Doesn't help that the graphics of that generation really didn't do much for me. (even the PSOne... they're tolerable, at best, and I'd usually prefer the SNES/NeoGeo par) /stops editing post
Don't tell me to "get used to" the A/B swap in Anniversary. That's the reason I'm not buying it. Yes, it's that big of an issue. (especially when there's no good reason for it)
That being said, I'm really glad to see Megaman hit the U.S. VC. (and even moreso anticipating MM2 & 9)
It's pretty good, but I've already bought SS1 and would rather have a Last Blade game. I don't play fighters often by myself, so I don't want too many.
I'm glad they're making the support available, but the sideways Wiimote is close enough to the NES for me. I don't like having to plug and unplug different accessories into my Wiimote.
If you've never played a Megaman game, I'd go with Megaman 2 first. MM2 has the password feature, so it's less hardcore than having to finish it all in one go. It's the best, IMO, and even Capcom admits they're aiming for MM 1&2 quality in 9.
I'll wait for Megaman 2, but this is still great news.
Also - is it true that the GC Megaman Collection has the shoot/jump controls reversed? I read that in a review, and I think that'd keep me from ever getting it. That, and the fact that Megaman 2 is all I really care to play.
Still don't think I'll get Ys. Maybe it was a gem for its time, but I just don't think it's my style. I guess I just haven't caught the Ys fever, but I'm glad for the literally hundreds worldwide that have.
@Kultist: Chocobo's Dungeon is a little kiddy, but I'm really enjoying it. Simple, fun gameplay in an old school Final Fantasy way. I haven't been into FF since VII and VIII, and I never finished VIII, but this was worth my $40. I love the retooled classic FF soundtrack too.
This is one NeoGeo title that shouldn't be complained about. I already downloaded the first one, and haven't really played this one anywhere else. May or may not buy, but I'm glad to hear it.
Exactly. The carebear gaming generation can go play something else. (probably something that won't hurt their feelings by making them choose between 'retry' and 'quit')
Each console has its own flavor of hardcore, I'd say. PS has FF/MetalGear obsessives, Xbox has Halo/GoW, Nintendo has Mario/Zelda/Metroid. It's only there due to exclusivity deals, 1st-party development, and occasional brand loyalty. Give the people what they want, and make them buy your system to get it. That's a big reason why I've preferred PCs for a while now, but I'm obviously here due to enjoying my Wii.
The only thing announcing a title does is make my fist tighten around my remaining 1100 points. I've had them for months, and at this point, it looks like they're going towards Megaman 9. (unless I also buy MM2 beforehand in a moment of weakness)
For some strange reason, it reminds me of the obscure NES Action RPG called Faria. Think I'll pass on this one, but I'm glad to see some folks eager for it.
I personally hope it's a solution that allows us to play from SD, but I'm open to other solutions. (as long as they're relatively inexpensive)
It's not like those USB ports on the back of my Wii are doing anything else. The only use I've had for them so far is powering a higher-end set of headphones. The connector has a funky interface, and requires USB power when connected via dongle.
Uh, pass. I see absolutely no reason to do this on the Wii. I thought Nintendo was against turning their console into a multimedia device? Hello, no DVD playback.
Nice list, heh. I hope Blazing Star has better hit detection than Plustar did. Sure, you die in one hit, but I always felt like enemy shots were tiny & fit into the background on Pulstar. Kind of annoyed me.
@Adamant: Funny you should mention SNES Doom. I actually enjoyed it at the time, but only because my previous Doom experience had been limited to short periods of the PC demo. PC Doom & Doom 2 beat it hands down, but I still fondly remember strafing left and right with the L & R buttons on the SNES. (I think it was borrowed from a friend, so at least I never dumped cash for it)

Re: USA VC Releases: Secret of Mana and Street Fighter II Genesis
I think SoM and NBA Jam were the only reasons I owned a SNES 4-player adapter.
In other news, I never played Secret of Evermore.

I think I'd prefer to support the dev and buy WiiWare, rather than playing the existing freeware incarnation. (assuming it's 1000 pts or less)
Re: USA VC Releases: Secret of Mana and Street Fighter II Genesis
This is ridiculously good news. Happy Columbus Day, denizens of Virtual Console America.

As long as there's an option - no biggie.

Re: EU VC Releases: Earthworm Jim and Shining Force II
I'd prefer the SNES Jim over Genesis version, with its trademark tinny sound, but eh. Guess we'll see if we get it here on Monday.
Re: The DSi – One Step Closer to a Portable Virtual Console?
I just fricken bought a DS Lite last month. Figures.
Re: Mega Man 9
Gahhh. Wasted an hour trying to finish off Wily. Guess my Wii will sit on the Home Button screen tonight until I can try again.
No idea how to kill Galaxy Man quickly, but he's the best one to fight for 10 minutes.
Re: USA VC Release: Super Turrican 2
I think everyone's too busy playing Megaman 9 to comment these days. I'm passing on ST2, but it's intriguing. Maybe on some rainy day.
Re: Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie "Exclusively" on XBLA
Fine by me. I wasn't into the game ten years ago anyway.

Mystic Quest was awful.
That's all I really have to contribute. I'd just like to see this thread bumped to 300 replies.
