Re: Cave Story Nearing The Finish Line

Alex, do you put your pants on each morning? Or do you argue them onto each leg?

Why is it so difficult to understand that we want to support "the little guy"? A similar principle that makes people want to buy local goods, rather than going to Wal-Mart or Target. It's not a clear brick & mortar equivalent for the analogy, but the principle stands. (groceries/produce, my cycling equipment, etc) We like the little guy for the sake of supporting variety and innovation. (because, let's face it, EA is no poster child for either) Yes, I'm willing to pay a couple of bucks for that.

Look at the movie industry. We see the same crap, rehashed and re-shoveled our way because it's mostly coming from the same sources. Supporting competition is a good idea, and putting down the Cave Story project is like saying you'd prefer to consume the same ol' corporate offerings. If the style isn't your thing, then keep your ten bucks. (and creative arguments)

A better analogy might be Brandon Sanderson's fantasy novel, Warbreaker. It's been made available on his website in PDF, actually as he's written and gone through edits. Long-story-short, it's been available for free but is soon releasing in retail paperback. I'll be paying the $7.99 because he's an author that I enjoy and want to support his future endeavors.

For the record, no. I'm not a big fan of sports games. I've had 1,000 points set aside for Cave Story since Christmas. The irony here is that I'm incredibly picky about how my points are spent. I even have Cave Story installed on my PC, but I'm waiting to play it on WiiWare.

Given the choice between the sellout sequel factory-type that EA is and a smaller developer, I'd much rather support the little guy. That, and the couch factor for playing side-scroller types.

I tried a bit of the PC Freeware version, and it convinced me that ten bucks was worth sending their way.

I prefer d-pad and waggling. Never really enjoyed analog sticks, and especially not dual. Then again, you're talking to a guy who's been mostly PC gaming since the N64 made him take a 10 year break from consoles.

I agree with the "let's just release the game" sentiment. Nice idea on the wiimotes, but black & white reminds me more of MadWorld. That, and I could just sharpe my own stuff onto a wiimote if I wanted it decorated. Bring on the game and they'll get my money.
