@ottospooky graphical changes could be easily done at this stage. What's really needed, and what seems to be missing that would make this game look much better, is some bloom, shows, and surface reflections. That mainly what makes Mario Kart 8 and Smash look so nice, even though they have fairly low-poly models.
Basically, all post-processing stuff and effects. The game would look way better if they just added a bit of that.
