Personally I think it's dumb. I get people don't want spoilers, but for an $80.00 single-player game that doesn't allow you to have multiple islands on one switch... i'd personally like the whole game to be there when I buy it. It just makes it feel unfinished, especially when half the updates have been adding mechanics into the game that all the previous games already had, for example the art-component of the museum and swimming. There's only so much you can do in a day-cycle of Animal Crossing anyway, having the whole game in there all at once just extends the lifespan of the game for me, whereas in the current system, it just results in frustration.
