@DiggleDog completely remade visuals from what I can see, speaking as someone who's currently replaying the original. I suggest looking at a comparison video on YouTube, it's very different.
@jsty3105 The music industry as a whole is horrible and it's multifaceted for sure, but then you look at how so many other big gaming companies DON'T do this, and how this tracks across so many other expressions of fandom: Fangames, Capcom and Sega are totally fine with them while Nintendo strikes them down, etc. It's enough of a specifically Nintendo behavior that it warrants being called out, and the fact that there are so many people instantly jumping to take a bullet to defend Nintendo like the Simpsons Apu meme absolutely sucks.
@Bloops I wish everyone replying "well actually, Nintendo has the LITERAL legal right to do this" would step back a moment and look at the bigger picture. It's not about whether Nintendo has a literal right to do this, it's about asking why this is worth so much to them, when it isn't to so many other companies, other companies who rightly realize that this kind of fan passion is a good thing, a true flattery to the content they produce.
@SalvorHardin I finally got my pocket over a month later because it was lost in shipping and man, the cult surrounding this device is so weird to me. It's a cool device and I'm glad I have it, but people are really acting like it didn't come out half-baked with pretty basic features missing.
@Link-Hero It's not just the resolution. The CRTs these old games were designed for have an intended and tangible effect on the visual experience because those games were designed with those TVs in mind.
Look up @CRTpixels on Twitter if you want good examples. They do some great work demonstrating the difference between the raw graphics on modern displays and the way they actually looked on their intended displays.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Real shame when this happens. It's why advancements in emulation are important too. Did you ever see the CRT-royale shader on an old game? Wild stuff
I don't think I can in good-faith blanket-recommend this game. Mechanically it's EXTREMELY homogenous dungeon crawling stuff with minimal room for combat depth.
That said, this is presentationally and narratively one of the most wild, immersive, powerful, and affecting experiences I've ever had in a video game. I cried, I got angry, and most importantly I cheered as the story unfolded around the wonderful cast of characters. I came to really care about Rei, Mirai, Sen, Nanana, and Kokoro as I learned their hopes and fears and sadness on their heartbreaking journeys, so much so I still somehow remember all their names 2 years later without looking them up. That's to say nothing about the gorgeous color choices, haunting music, and meta tricks the game pulls to give you chills.
It's an experience I'll never forget. And who knows, maybe if you too are willing to put up with repetitive dungeon crawler gameplay for ~40 hours, you too will discover somethign special.
Not on Switch (still disappointed it's a mess because I wanted it portable), so I'm most excited about the map fix. It's absolutely baffling how the map doesn't already auto center upon opening, with a clear and obvious marker showing where you are. Every time I open it, it's a game of Where's Waldo to see where i actually am.
