Stop me if you've heard this one before: You and your sister get dragged into Purgatory, and when you find out that you have a super-special power that involves crying a whole lot, a bunch of demons enlist you to rid Purgatory of all the corrupted monsters that have invaded.
Well, the reason you may have heard this one before — other than it happening to you — is that it's the plot of CRYSTAR, an action-RPG that came out on PS4 back in 2018.
CRYSTAR is now heading to Switch in 2022, alongside a physical edition and an EU-exclusive Limited Edition, which is available to pre-order now and comes with:
- A physical copy of the game
- Hardcover art book
- Soundtrack
- Acrylic stand of "Weeping Warrior"
- Cloth Poster of "The Sorrow of Rei"
- Visual Diary
- Art Cards of "Souls in Purgatory"
- Collector's box
The official release in Japan is February 2022, but the Western release — which will come with all previously released DLC — will launch on the Nintendo Switch on April 1st, 2022.

It's going to take more than being able to pet a cuddly bunch of polygons to convince me about this game. Looks rather samey...
I don't normally go for games that look like anime, but the mechanics of this one look very intriguing, and the setting is different enough to stand out from the crowd.
I'm a bit tempted by that physical edition.
One of the very few JRPG's I'm interested in so I'll get it. Persona and SMT are the only other JRPG's I like. Something about this strikes different and in a good way which is why I'm interested.
@CharlieGirl Anime is life, Shaka brah! 😆
This one looks a little simple for me. I don't believe the voice acting is bad, but the writing is something else.
"Indeed. I ponder what the Revenant Princess, notorious in Purgatory, is doing in a place like this."
there are similar games like this that are better.. but I don't remember their names even though I own them so.... I'll pass on this one
This looks cute. I'll see if I get through the other 8 RPGs in my queue by Spring...
@GrailUK I'm often surprised at the vast number of generic rpgs.
Ever since I saw this game on PS4, I always wanted this game (I don't own a PS4.) Glad it's coming to the switch!
@tyranny_life Funny since this for some reason this is the only JRPG to get my attention besides the Persona games, lol
@JustMonika perhaps the art or character models are your cup of tea?
I'm also old. When I was young playing super nintendo and watching sailor moon on tv, I would have jumped at the opportunity to play a game like this.
Not anymore. and not after having seen much better for many years already.
@tyranny_life I became addicted to anime when I was 36 and I'm now 39. I also just became addicted to visual novels about 6 months ago. I'm getting into all this stuff later in life. I even have a Yui Hirasawa tattoo that takes up half my arm. I did all the boring adult stuff in my 20's and I was depressed and miserable. Now I'm just having fun being able to do whatever I want. I work in the world's highest rated medical center as a PCA and unit councilor, so outside of the 3 nights a week that I do my 12 hour shifts, I believe I've earned the right to enjoy and do whatever I wish. I have no shame in my interests. Cute girls doing cute things is a way of life, lol
I never quite trust when a game's release date is April Fool's day. . .
I don't think I can in good-faith blanket-recommend this game. Mechanically it's EXTREMELY homogenous dungeon crawling stuff with minimal room for combat depth.
That said, this is presentationally and narratively one of the most wild, immersive, powerful, and affecting experiences I've ever had in a video game. I cried, I got angry, and most importantly I cheered as the story unfolded around the wonderful cast of characters. I came to really care about Rei, Mirai, Sen, Nanana, and Kokoro as I learned their hopes and fears and sadness on their heartbreaking journeys, so much so I still somehow remember all their names 2 years later without looking them up. That's to say nothing about the gorgeous color choices, haunting music, and meta tricks the game pulls to give you chills.
It's an experience I'll never forget. And who knows, maybe if you too are willing to put up with repetitive dungeon crawler gameplay for ~40 hours, you too will discover somethign special.
