Re: Nintendo Reveals Average Salary, Age And More Of Its Employees In Japan

It’s inaccurate to assume that the average length of employment means job satisfaction. Whilst that would be true in the West, switching employers in Japan has for a long time been socially frowned upon as it is considered disloyal - it iss not at all uncommon for Japanese employees to remain with their first employer until retirement.

It’s only become less frowned upon in the past 5 or so years, and even then more so among the younger population. Considering the average employee at Nintendo is near 40 years old it’s highly likely most would never leave the company even if they were not happy, purely due to societal norms.

“almost reminds me of playing an RPG like Fire Emblem” - It’s almost as if the Pokémon games are an RPG series? I for one am actually quite happy to see an RPG series adopt more traits of an RPG. Has the increased focus on story always been executed perfectly? No, but I’d rather the approach they’re taking than the bland releases on the GB.

The recent VC releases of Gens I and II only reinforced just how far the series as developed. The GB games were devoid of story, had routes that were indistinguishable from each other and were full of programming bugs. The series is by no means perfect, and I’ve not always thought every decision GF has made was a good one, but for me every generation with the exclusion of Gen VI has made the previous ones practically unplayable due to the downgrades in QoL that would take place.

I’m also frankly astounded by the amount of people who seem to want to change what is one of the best combat systems in gaming not only do an incredibly dumbed down version (despite claims that the series is becoming too easy) but to a completely different genre. Moving from turn-based RPG to ARPG would completely change the game. While we’re at it, why not make Xenoblade turn-based, Zelda an FPS with a bow and Mario a tower defence genre. The fact that individuals prefer action RPGs shouldn’t mean we completely remove the turn-based genre. Pokémon has by far one of the best turn-based combat systems, hence why it has never fundamentally changed, only progressively evolved. The combat is simple enough for a 5 year old to understand (5yo me completing Pokémon Blue can testify) whilst is complex enough to hold tournaments that border on e-sports level.

The other thing the community constantly seems to forget is that Pokémon is and always will be first and foremost a children's game. It isn’t designed to be aimed at adult gamers, adults have stayed with the series because the core formula is at its heart one of the most successful in the history of video games but they will never be GF’s primary audience.

I really appreciate how well put across this article was, it’s far more articulate than most ‘fans’ ‘s compaints, but as someone who has played the games since Gen I I wholeheartedly disagree with every idea in the article, I think they would all fundamentally damage the series and remove the very thing that makes it a Pokémon game.
