Don’t jump out of your seats too quickly here, folks — Tanuki Justice has nothing to do with Mario’s Tanooki suit. Developed by Wonderboy Bobi, this 2D run ‘n’ gun platformer actually shares a lot more in common with classic Mega Man games, albeit with slightly more frenetic gameplay. It’s a fun, challenging experience (particularly with the difficulty ramped up to maximum), but one that’s ultimately a bit on the short side.
Spread over six levels — which depict specific and familiar themes such as haunted graveyards and sunny shorelines — you simply work your way through waves of enemies until you come face-to-face with the boss. There’s a nice variety of minions to dispatch, with some bounding relentlessly toward you, and others hurling projectiles in ‘bullet hell’ fashion; it’s a shame so many of them cross over into multiple levels, but each stage features at least one unique enemy type, which is nice. There’s a multiplayer mode if you want to play two-player locally, and although nothing really changes in regards to the level layout and enemy placement, it’s a fun little addition.
To get an idea of how the gameplay works, imagine taking the Metal Blade from Mega Man 2, making it the primary method of combat and stretching it across an entire game. You can shoot out shurikens in any direction, and although their range is quite poor, you can pick up upgrades to make the projectiles bigger and more powerful. Using the triggers lets you lock your firing direction in place, although you’ll likely find this to be an unnecessary addition for the most part. As you defeat enemies, you’ll also fill up a special meter, which lets you unleash a massive spinning shuriken once it’s full, which is fantastic for chipping a boss’s health down.
Although the levels are disappointingly short, they feel like they’ve been meticulously designed to challenge you without ever feeling overwhelming or unfair; if you happen to die at any point, chances are you’ll quickly learn from your mistake and triumph on the next round. This might sound a bit easy to some, and it probably is on normal difficulty, but select one of the higher modes, and not only will the amount of enemies drastically increase, but their rate of fire will also shoot up.
Tanuki Justice is typically ‘retro’ in terms of its overall presentation. The colourful, pixel-heavy visuals pay homage to NES titles (although the art design often screams Sonic), and the soundtrack features some catchy, albeit rather repetitive tunes. There are a couple of annoying quirks typical of some 8-bit games, like the inability to jump down through a platform, and items disappearing after just a few short seconds. Otherwise, if you’re after a fun little run ‘n’ gun platformer reminiscent of early Mega Man titles, this might just be the one for you.

Looks simple and fun, may probably check it out during a sale.
@TheSmashTheorist I see, they should just release it for the 'exposure', right?
Looks pretty cool and I'll look into it, but in the meantime I have The Legend of Dark Witch on Switch for my "short run n gun" needs.
@TheSmashTheorist Dark Souls can be completed in under an hour, why should it cost money? Same with Skyrim. Almost every single shmup in existence is in the 30-40 minute time range. Contra games can be beaten in 15 minutes, and there’s a collection of those on the e shop.
Heck, the original Super Mario Bros can be beaten in 5 minutes, at that point they should pay you to play it lol.
So, should none of those things cost money?? Lol this site never ceases to amaze me.
@StephenYap3 Hadn't heard of that one - I looked it up and it looks great! Thanks for the tip. Makes the comment section worthwhile.
it is a matter of semantics after all, but these screenshots seem more reminiscent of Master System aesthetics to me than the NES.
@TG16_IS_BAE what i'm trying to say is why should i pay $5 for an experience that takes under an hour?
@TheSmashTheorist That’s an extremely reasonable cost. If they were asking $25 I would understand your position, but $5 gets pissed out on a Starbucks coffee more regularly and by more people.
Looks great! Gonna pick it up for sure!
One for a deep discount. Had this on the wishlist actually but I will wait.
@DockEllisD Wow they heard my prayer already?
@TheSmashTheorist While it sounds like a straight run through takes less than an hour if you're good, it sounds like it would probably last longer, especially if you want to tackle the higher difficulty levels, which might have a better overall balance. Games like this tend to benefit by being under an hour in terms of its duration per session, and they can be more fun to return to later on due to gameplay requiring pattern recognition. With that said, if you're after something longer, that's fair. But it's good that these shorter games are also available for those who prefer those arcade-style experiences. The pricing will never be perfect when it comes to video games and it can't just be based on length.
Not being able to jump down through platforms will irritate me. Will consider this in a sale but at such a short length think I will forget it easily. Have played a few short games lately.
This is definitely interesting to me. I love the title. The concept looks fun. I'll have to check out some more video, but I like it at a glance. It looks like it's trying an early PC Engine aesthetic with Genesis-style background layers. I guess it's more like a SuperGrafx game then in that case. And the stage motifs look to reference other games, especially Ninja Spirit and Revenge of Shinobi jumped out at me. And I see some Wonderboy. I like what they've done so far.
I really like the design of the cat boss early on. The sprite work, especially on the bosses looks pretty nice.
@TG16_IS_BAE it's £13 (currently on sale for £10) in the UK which does feel a little steep for whats on offer.
It looks like a fun little game, which I will more than likely pick up when it goes on a deep sale or forget about if it doesn't.
@ChaosBadger777 That’s more than reasonable.
I love the art style!
@TG16_IS_BAE You're making some odd comparisons. Skyrim has way more in it that you can do. BotW can also be completed fairly quickly, but as with Skyrim, it has a huge world to explore with loads to do. This game sounds like you can blast through it in an hour and that's pretty much it, you've seen everything.
Ignore price for a moment. Perhaps a better comparison would be A Short Hike, which is legitimately meant to be short (the name is a giveaway) and that scored quite highly. Why wasn't game length an issue with that game?
@TheSmashTheorist Because it's an old style arcade run n gun, how many arcade games have you stood in front of for ten hours?
I am awaiting my physical copy, game looks awesome and everyone is giving it good reviews.
