The first NES Castlevania was like a breath of fresh air when it was first released. Capcom's spooky, but cartoon-like Ghost 'n' Goblins was the closest thing on the market, but Konami's game was a little more mature and serious. The gothic feel for which the series has become famous for is all present and correct, and the excellent music sets the scene perfectly. Some of the tunes featured here are still being reused and remixed several years down the line.
Unfortunately, time has not been kind to the game in other respects. It's the first in the series so, as you might expect, it's pretty basic. There are annoying niggles, like not being able to jump off stairs, and only being able to whip in front of you also leads to problems. The game is incredibly difficult in places - the final boss will have you cursing and swearing, I can assure you of that!
Castlevania is one of my all time favourite franchises and regardless of the faults, the first NES title is still something of a classic and is a welcome addition to the VC. However I'd recommend that you download the superior SNES version (Castlevania IV, which is basically a re-telling of the first NES game) as it's a much more enjoyable experience.

This game was truly innovative when it came out on the NES in 1987. It still holds up well today.
I love this game, I didn't get it until around a month ago and I love it, a good indication of its hold-up-iness.
I'd give this game a 9/10, maybe 10 back in the day when the atmosphere it created was almost unrivaled. They definately nailed the atmosphere with this one, very tough difficulty, awesome fitting music, knowing that death can get you at almost any moment, simply marvelous.
The only problem I personally see someone having with this game is not being up to the challenge.
Newcomers beware of hard bosses, and far knock-backs into bottomless pits, otherwise enjoy the monster-busting fun to catchy tunes
The hit detection in this game needed some serious work, IMO...
Otherwise it's a fabulous game! I just love it! It's difficult, but not daunting, and it always feels fair and forgiving(for a NES game). I'm actually surprised homany extra lives it gives you during the level if you play well enough - I don't even think you get 1-ups in the other Castlevanias!
...and I have to say, that end paragraph is the main reason I picked this one up first and still, to this day, have not played Super Castlevania IV.
Egoraptor tells me this is the one to get.
