These game file sizes are really getting outrageous. Combined with the manufactured techbroligarch AI ram crisis, it's unsustainable... 🤦‍♂️😡

I will never understand people's problem with Game Key Cards. I can buy them from the retailer of my choice (not tied to the eshop) and I can lend it to a friend or sell it when I'm done. I understand that space management is annoying but surely most of us will just download once, complete it and then move on. What material difference does it really make to me if the game is not stored on the actual cart?

If this is the sacrifice to avoid a PS6 style digital only future then so be it.

That’s not too bad actually considering the scope of this game. I hope that means Switch 2 is using similar quality assets and isn’t downgrading textures a ton.

This might be a hot take but I don’t mind having one big game sitting on my system memory. Especially since most first party games are much smaller. That’s kind of how I’ve been doing it, just allowing for one massive game while I have other smaller games accompanying it. Right now, Cyberpunk 2077 is my big game and Rhythm Heaven and Splatoon Raiders are my smaller games.

@jfp There is genuinely no issue with this file size. You guys are way too used to the wizardry first party Nintendo games use to compress their games.

@EVIL-C Major AAA Games have been this size for several years now. This isn’t even the worst there is. Some games are double this.

@Ooccoo_Jr Well, it’s a million times better than a code in a box. It does give you some semblance of ownership that all digital doesn’t. But it has the same weakness as digital only, you can lose access to, which won’t happen for physical games.

It’s also SE, so let’s not pretend like file size matters.

@TerribleTerabytes Not news to anyone. The point still stands at how insane some file sizes are. Wasn't the biggest problem before the AI hellscape destroyed storage prices.

Even if we go in the idea that Nintendo can make a bigger card, and by the rule of technology always doubling their amounts, Nintendo still couldn't make a card big enough for Revelation since the card would probably only be 128 gigs

@Ooccoo_Jr agree with you, of course I'd love a proper physical but I do sell alot of games, some because I've completed or some just because I dont like them - to have this option available saves me money and a bloated Steam library like I currently have (+500 games, its ridiculous, those damn sales! )

I'm upset. The game has story dlc not included with the disc I will be buying. Next they'll tell me the whole game isn't on disc.... I will wait and see, but I'm regretting not just buying the PS1 version. It looked so shiny 😿

Starting to wish I had bought 2 1TB cards when they were cheap. oh well, gotta leverage the one I have like jenga. Very glad I kept my switch so my switch 2 is mostly switch 2 only.

@Ooccoo_Jr for me, personally, it’s the fact that it’s space management on top of the inconvenience of having to swap cartridges. For somebody that rarely sells games, like me, I’d just go all digital to at least have the benefit of having access to my games without having to carry them around with me AND worry about storage management.

This is just me and my first world problems. The bigger issue is for those living in areas where they don’t have easy access to good WiFi connections. We take our access to high speed internet for granted because most of us have access, but we forget that there are still people that simply because of where they live might not have access to the speeds they need to download these stupidly huge games.

I know that these carts are expensive, so I’m not saying everything has to be on cart, but for big publishers like Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco, etc there’s no excuse so long as the game fits. Even if it doesn’t, put as much on the cart as possible and have the rest be a required download. Charge a premium for them if needed. Eshop can be regular price and physical maybe $10-$20 more. Let the consumer decide if having full physical is worth the inflated price.

@Fighting_Game_Loser If there was such a card I'm sure they could compress the game just that tiny bit more to fit it on.

Also, they could simply have the game on 2 cards and charge a Mario Kart World price for the game. Obviously they won't even put smaller games on one card but there'd be nothing to stop them charging more and using 2 on a smaller run (and people would pay)

@20thCenturyFrox no game is future-proof anymore. Once downloadable patches became a thing, future-proofing became an obsolete concept. Even if you own the game on a cart, if the download server were to shut down you would be stuck with the version on the cart. Also there’s the long-term viability of the NAND memory used in the carts, and disk rot for disk based hardware. Future-proofing has never really been a thing, people just like to pretend it is. In the end, it’s up to the publishers to properly store the source code safely to allow for future redistribution. Future-proofing was never up to the consumer.

@JimNorman You forgot to mention the price in euro. Your share of readers from euro countries is probably not much lower than that of UK.

An all-digital future isn't even convenient until you can download+install at least 200GB of data onto your system in less than a minute. Storage management is just as much of an issue with digital games as they are with GKC's.

Nintendo made a surprisingly wise decision sticking with cartridges in general, but because they're alone, there isn't enough money and minds being thrown at R&D to expand cartridge capacity and speeds quickly enough. By the time Nintendo achieves 256GB capacity on their cartridge we might be dealing with 500GB+ game downloads.

And of course, by that point other platforms will probably push for storage to be kept on data farms and stream everything to you. Once people grow desensitized to the idea of booting up a Netflix-style digital platform on their TV's and playing anything without waiting to download, even Nintendo's eShop-style digital storefront might seem antiquated.

It's all very depressing to think about.

I know on my Steam Deck and Series X that Baldurs Gate 3 and Diablo 4 proudly own the largest game sizes at 140gb+ each….may be 150+ now with updates, honestly haven’t bothered to check either in months lmao

I sure miss when developers did that optimization thing, now they just expect you to buy extra stuff. Good thing I have no interest in these butcheries of the best RPG ever made.

@20thCenturyFrox They would also have to write, design, code and implement a way to swap cartridges mid game at a kernal level. So yeah, that ain't happening.

@EVIL-C Games being 100gb+ plus is pretty common now. Its just the nature of games being more advanced and being more higher quality.

At some 80-85% of ESO filesize, will the game have a map to match? Or just become another testimony to HD+ visuals remaining a liability in the industry? For all my steadily growing interest in the VIIR trilogy (between the reported deviations from the original plot and what looks like the potentially best FF combat since Gran Pulse saga), I'm in no hurry to engage it while still juggling XII and XV (with toe dips into XVI courtesy of Asobi RP), but all these trends are leaving me worried even for Xenoblade Genesis size-wise.
