To celebrate three decades of the first-person shooter Quake, MachineGames and id Software have teamed up once again to release a brand-new episode.

It's called 'Dawn of the Machine' and is available on all platforms, including the Switch (and Switch 2 via backwards compatibility).

This free update features 19 all-new maps across a cohesive campaign. It's filled with hidden secrets, a new soundtrack and comes with a new Deathmatch map. You can get the full details and patch notes on the Slayers Club.

Here's a summary of what you can expect, and the trailer is above:

As the battle-hardened Ranger, players survive a labyrinthine dimension where time folds back onto itself, creating a unique looping structure where each visit in the present reshapes the future.

Collect runes to unlock previously sealed paths brimming with new routes, encounters and secrets, plus persistent health and ammunition upgrades throughout add a new layer of progression to Quake’s classic gameplay.

As players attempt to break the cycle, they will face deadly new twists on familiar foes, including the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, Blood Shambler and more. Meet the challenge head-on with new weapon variants like the lightning-charged Super Axe or the Laser Cannon, capable of ricocheting projectiles to perforate enemies from every angle. Only with enough strength (and overwhelming firepower) may Ranger then confront The Nightmare Machine, the font of this dimension’s madness - and his ticket to freedom!
