It seems another first-party Switch game has leaked a week out from release. This time it's the team-based shooter Splatoon 3.
If you head over to the Splatoon subreddit, social media or YouTube, you should be able to see all sorts of spoilers related to the game's story mode - including boss leaks and more. The same subreddit is making an effort to shut down spoilers.
Some players have been able to get hold of retail copies early and from there the flood gates have seemingly opened. There are now also reports about the game's files being dumped on PC, with cracked versions of the game already circulating online.
Keep in mind, the servers for the Switch game's multiplayer won't be live until 9th September. Switch leaks like this have previously happened to Paper Mario, Metroid Dread, the Pokémon games and more recently Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
It just means you'll have to be careful from here on out if you do plan on experiencing the game's story mode spoiler free.
If we hear any updates, we'll let you know.

Yeah, don't search splatoon 3 on YouTube.
Unfortunate but easy enough to avoid. I'll just continue focusing on my backlog until Friday.
@Slinkoy1 Yeah I'm not searching anything, but regardless, I'm getting video recommendations anyway for 'Salmon Run this' and 'Story Mode that'.
A few of them I spotted have black thumbnails with 'spoiler' written on it, and then I came across what looks like some kind of final boss right on the thumbnail...yeesh.
Spoilert Alert: Too much water
7.8 out of 10
Would've been nice to have this posted earlier this morning when I got a glimpse of potentially the final boss via some eejit (which is putting it lightly) in my recommended but hey what can you do.
I'm cool with anything but Story spoilers honestly, everything else I'd be more than glad to see in detail (like unrevealed weapons, Salmon Run know-how and the like) so of course it gives me the one thing I didn't want. THANKS (I share your pain @Shadeon_Koopa).
It's going to be an arduous 5 days.
Here we go again lol
The fact that it doesn't have local multiplayer just like the 2nd game makes it a pass for me.
I'm definitely the type who likes going out to actively find spoilers and leaks.
It's the gameplay experience I'm more interested in, than secrets and story beats and unlockable game modes.
Leaks and spoilers are avoidable. I mean, I stayed away from Undertale spoilers for six years, and that was (and is) a cultural icon on-par with the plot of Final Fantasy 7. I think it can be fun for the option to be there.
Nothing new here. A major game leaking online days before launch is just to be expected anymore. Just avoid looking at images and YouTube.
This is one big reason why I’m going straight to Hero Mode before I play a single Turf War match!
I haven’t watched a single splatoon video in YouTube. I didn’t even know leaks were going on.
Will be interesting to see what reviews it get soon.
I’m holding out to see if it’s to similar to number 2 and also the campaign content as Nintendo on some of their games seem to be cutting that part a bit short recently.
Utterly vile. Ban their Nintendo accounts for life, lock every single digital purchase, and brick their consoles.
You don't need to report every time a game is leaked.
We get it, the console is hacked, naturally piracy (or the minority of people that participate in it) is going to happen.
I can understand if it's a story focused game but be honest most people are going to immediately play online as soon as they get this game, the story is neat but it's just a bonus.
I honestly don't mind games leaking early, as it gives me chance to see how the game runs and what it's like before I spend £50-£60 buying it.
Nothin' new. i don't really care for spoilers anyways. But I do miss the old days of when we didn't have to worry about this sort of thing.
Don't mind me, though, just me droning on.
Youtube has recommended me a few vague spoilers for Splatoon 3. I will say, it does get me more interested to play Return of the Mammalians.
maybe tomorrow on nsw2u
Probably not a ton to actually spoil with a game like this... if the story of the first two games are anything to go by, its not going to be anything that incredible. Though I get why diehard fans would wanna avoid anything.
Stop mentioning it, NintendoLife.
Please.
You'll just make everyone more curious.
@CharlieGirl Please tell me your secrets!
@Jokerwolf Literally the only reason I've never touched the series.
Is anyone surprised by this? Likely, someone got an advance copy for review or Let's Play purposes, and they ripped the game files and leaked them online, hiding their tracks using a VPN.
It's inevitable in this day and age.
@iLikeUrAttitude this isn't just about piracy people got their hands on the game early in order to dump the rom in the first place
Early leaks were probably copies of Splattoon 2
So let me guess (as the scenario I'm about to describe as to how this happened in the past might yet be the case again)? (clears throat...) Okay. So some mom and pop video game stores across the world got their copies early. Saw some of their favorite customers were preorder customers for the game. They gave those favorite customers their copies very early and then to finish it in the words of sports talk radio host Jim Rome, "Oh no...here we go again!". Might've gotten it right here, might've gotten it wrong but I have a hunch what and how I described it here? Happened again. Out!
NOOOO SPOILERS
I went and watched the first 5 minutes of cut scenes and boss fights. I might go back and finish if it hasn’t been copyright claimed by the end of the day.
@Would_you_kindly Again, who cares? This happens all the time.
Yeah no I'll avoid clicking on that subreddit link thanks. I despise spoilers.
Probably DJ Octavio making a comeback.
I love how emulation is keeping up. The best way to play for free.
I’m going to try to avoid, but I’ve mostly come to expect that spoilers are just part of life now.
@RareAir23 big box retailers all have the game about a week before release. There’s millions of copies out there, so some are definitely slipping through the cracks. There’s a spot in my city that famously(infamously?) will sell you the game as soon as they have it, usually that Tuesday.
nothing to avoid spoiler wise, i play splatoon for the competitive side / online not the single player
People really scare about spoilers on a multiplayer game? wow
Under the counter payments again. At least some of these people are respectful.
@Zucaritas
You'd be surprised how much lore some Splatoon fans can get into.
Didn’t realize this game was coming out so soon. I’ll get it before the end of the year but feel like it won’t be all that special.
“Emulation is for game preservation guys!”
Lol. XB3 all over again.
If this article wasn't published, I wouldn't have known spoilers existed or the game leaked early and would have continued life as normal. Now that I've seen this article, I'll probably get flooded with spoilers in my recommended videos list. Thanks algorithm and YouTube overlords.
I have never heard anything of splatoon story mode in past games, is it really that interesting to care about spoilers? (This is a genuine question)
Piracy of Nintendo games pisses me off. Nintendo really needs to do more to stop this from happening for when they release their next console. They need to make the system bulletproof.
Whenever I see articles like this, I always wonder "What's the point?" You really can't wait 6 days for the game to release?
This may be a dumb question, but since I don't bother to emulate Switch games on PC I don't know exactly how it works. I know there's a lotta ins, a lotta outs, a lotta what-have-yous. A lotta strands to keep in your head, man.
Anyway, my question is this: if you use an emulator to play Splatoon 3 on PC, can those people then play multiplayer with the Switch players (once the servers are live, obviously)? If so, that sounds like it will be really annoying for legit players.
@ValZ That’s the poing. Get clicks and engagement, without any actual content.
@MrYuzhai No system will ever be bulletproof. Pirates are gonna pirate. The biggest attempts there have been to avoid piracy, DRM systems lile Denuvo, have only ended up impacting performance or features for legit customers.
Oatmealdome at it again.!!
Most 1st party Nintendo games tend to leak before the street date, just because vendors for physical copies need the stock on-hand for release day. Really, any game with a big enough hype train has this happen, just because no workplace has 100% good-noodle employees.
Hell, I went and bought Skyward Sword after I beat it - which was before its original release date. I was hell-bent on not getting any spoilers at all. Lmao
@Arawn93 Every Single Time, the "Preservationists" win!
@HandheldHaunter It is just nintendo's way of guaranteeing people have to buy another copy of the game to play multiplayer with people. In my opinion games where companies force you to buy multiple copies juat to play multiplayer you should get it cheaper if you're buying multiple at the same time. I would have no problem getting 2 copies for like a $100.
This is why they need Denuvo to come in and lock their games down
