Splatoon 3 has been out for just over a week now and if you're wondering what's on the horizon for Nintendo's latest squid-shooter, a new datamine might have the answer.
According to the well-known Nintendo dataminer OatmealDome, there are possibly three new modes coming to the game's Salmon Run mode in a future update. They're titled "Pair", "Underground" and "Contest".
The "Pair" and "Underground" modes would apparently have their own "pay grades and titles" and "Underground" would feature higher quotas. These modes could also possibly be "occasional events".
Keep in mind nothing here has been officially announced or revealed by Nintendo at this point in time.
Have you put in a shift for Mr. Grizz yet in Splatoon 3's Salmon Run mode, or are you too busy with the player verse player multiplayer content? Let us know in the comments, and if we hear any updates about this datamine, we'll let you know.

That would add some much needed variety to this mode, don’t get me wrong, I love the mode, but those fly fish could get grilled.
Mr. Grizz is involved?... suuuure he is... 🤐
Could they tone down the Glowflies while they're at it?
These codenames sound very interesting though. I'd love a Duos focused Salmon Run, Underground gets me thinking of potentially playing Salmon Run in the Story Mode stages and Contest could be a 1v1v1v1 situation. I'm inclined to believe the latter will be an event like Big Run due to the lack of ranking/grading systems applied to it but I'd be down to see more stuff added to Salmon Run because it's currently my favourite mode with how much stuff they've added between 2 and 3. My only request would be more maps: only having 3 is a bit lame to be honest.
Salmon Run is pretty much the only reason I bought this game, so more modes would be great!
Salmon Run started out fun, but quickly became highly frustrating after a few ranks, it's basically near impossible to win anymore. I just wished there was a way to change the difficulty or something...
@Joeynator3000 Feel the same way in Splatoon 2. I used to like it, but I never could really get anywhere because I would be matched up with peck necks who would:
A: Immediately charge in and get splatted.
B: Just stand there splatting Salmonids and never collect any Golden Eggs.
or
C: Collect a Golden Egg, but never take it to the basket!
@Joeynator3000 Doesn't demoting yourself lower the difficulty? Not enough? I've never tried demoting myself to see what its like.
@WoomyNNYes It only reduces the points by a certain amount, and in my case my actual rank didn't even decrease....and apparently you can only use it once. I was never able to do it again.
@PigmaskFan That wasn't the case for me, the whole team was trying, we just get swarmed way too easily and quickly.
@Joeynator3000 Salmon Run is definitely harder than it was in 2. I've never had my ass handed to me this much on Spawning Grounds before. They're gonna have to lower the difficulty a little.
@PigmaskFan TBF depending on the weapon, you need to focus on protecting the collected eggs rather you yourself jump in and get them or else you're the one who's gonna get roasted by your teammates. It's a tricky situation since if none of your mates are collecting then it's up to you even if your weapon is a splat charger.
id love more modes to flesh out salmon run, its really its own beast compared to lobby matches. plus later ranks really can feel impossible and stressful, some variety would be nice
@Snatcher Please do not put flyfish into grillers.
Grillers and fly fish are both painful enough to deal with already we do not need waves that have both of them at once, yet alone a combo wombo of the two enemies.
While a datamine meaning there's no guarantee any of these will actually make it (Splatoon 1 had Playable Octolings datamined, for example), this feels like they're paying far more attention to giving TLC to Salmon Run over updates than they did in 2 with the scant handful of additional maps over 18 months (with the final map added a full year after the second additional/fourth total map).
If I were to speculate as to what these might be:
Underground - An endless mode of Salmon Run, showcasing a map themed around underground lakes
Duo - Some maps designed for 2 player Salmon Run
Contest - either Salmon Run to see who can get the most golden eggs against another crew with the same seed, or 2v2 contest to collect eggs on one of the 4 player Salmon Run maps.
I'm always up for more Salmon Run modes but just because something is datamined doesn't mean that it's guaranteed to show up, even if it's still very likely. I'm reminded of that one datamined Ranked Mode in Splatoon 2 involving a rocket that was never used.
I'm getting excited about what the Big Run might be like. It's clearly going to be Salmon Run's answer to the Splatfest.
I'm just here for the trading card game;)
The solo offline mode is about 100000 times better than I expected. I have not even tried grizz yet.
@Joeynator3000
Practicing at something difficult is your own difficulty slider. Eventually it won't be as difficult
Glad I'm not the only one experiencing a sharp difficulty spike, since that means there's hope of a patch.
I had my first round be a flooded stage with the Grillers where we were wiped out within the first 30 seconds. TWICE IN A ROW.
The run after that had a normal first round, then straight to the glowflies and wiped out in the first 30 seconds again. I can't blame my teammates, as I could clearly tell they were trying their best.
Competitive salmon run
@Desrever Grillers and Glowflies are the worst, yeah.
Apparently most people are finding it harder than S2, though despite the apparent increase in difficulty relative to the same hazard level I'm also finding it a lot more comfortable due to the new movement and egg toss options.
@StephenFox Yeah, its honestly astounding how much of a difference it makes to be able to throw the eggs.
Overall, I'm much happier with this version of Salmon Run, but that jump to Profreshional Part-Timer is no joke.
@Joeynator3000 the diffuculty is self adjusting. The more you loose, the more your rank drops, the easier it gets. It balances out. I was fluctuating between part time pro and pro+1, and part time is obviously easier. Now I'm at pro +3 and I haven't gotten that better, it's just I've been playing with people who aren't horrible. I'll be pro+4 soon, unless I get stuck with bad groups and go back to part time, since the weekend is over
@StephenFox the trick is to have all 4 players grouped together on a part of the map with only 1 route to it. To concentrate 4 players fire onto the enemies. Unfortunately it's taking everyone a while to re remember this or to learn it, so it becomes instant death and panick and mayhem
I don't know why they didn't create brand new maps for salmon run. Unless I'm totally miss remembering, but these were all in 2 right? I would have thought they'd have new maps, and then eventually re release the old ones for variety
