Announced during September's Nintendo Direct Showcase after heavy rumour of its existence, Octopath Traveler II is coming to the Switch in early 2023. In a recent interview with Famitsu, developer Square Enix sat down to discuss just how far through the process it is with the game and we are pleased to see that the February 24th, 2023 release date appears very much probable.
In a segment of the conversation (translated by Noisy Pixel), the studio confirms that Octopath Traveler II is currently 90% of the way through development, urging fans to wait a little longer before it reveals more information on the upcoming HD-2D JRPG.
"We’re excited to finally announce to everyone that Octopath Traveler II’s development is 90% complete. We are currently in the last stretch, so we ask that you wait just a little bit more. Keep an eye out for further information coming out at a later date."
Square Enix recently shared 20 minutes of Octopath Traveler II gameplay footage at this year's Tokyo Games Show, so it is clear that the game is indeed close to completion.
After thoroughly enjoying the game's predecessor — as seen in our glowing 9/10 review — we couldn't be more excited to see what Enix has been up to for the sequel. Looking at the gameplay footage and trailer, it looks gorgeous.

Pretty impressive especially considering that it was just revealed for the first time this month.
In the games industry usually its the opposite of this that happens.
I would really like a characters trailer to get to know them better
A Demo coming right up!
Team Asano is doing really awesome work at SquareEnix! They've come a long way from the first Bravely Default game
Just like how Pikmin 4 was nearly complete in 2015? 😏😏😏
Excited, but I do hope they include an epilogue type chapter that ties the stories together. I finished all 8 stories of the first game but never did all the stuff to supposedly tie the story together. I decided to come back some other time but forgot. Now I can barely remember the battle system.
I hope the final boss will not be so freaking difficult !!! I didn't finish the game only due to the final boss. I have tried twice and I failed and also, it took a long time to fight.. I saw the ending from youtube but I didn't like this situation. It's like it feels a bit bitter in the end, despite the fact that the whole game was awesome.
@spottedleaf it's already out on the official Square Enix YouTube.
It shows roughly what their first chapter is going to be about, and sometimes a bit more!
Never even finished the first one 😕
SOS I need a time bubble so I can freeze time and play ALL THE GAMES then unfreeze and go to work
@TheBigK and like how Hey! Pikmin is Pikmin 4.
Ready and waiting. I will say if there is a demo I will skip it. I trust the devs.
Tbf I'd expect 2D games not to be in development long at all, I mean they will have gotten three games out in 3 and half years. I wonder if triangle strategy 2 is planned for 2024.
I'll need a demo to convince myself this time. Hopefully they changed enough to fix my issues with the first game. I couldn't play past more than a few hours. While I liked the mechanics, graphics, and music overall, I wasn't fond of how disjointed and generic many of the character vignettes felt (especially if others were present), how grindy the game was (I don't mind some grinding in RPGs, but there's a limit), and how repetitive the overall gameplay loop felt. I realized I couldn't put up with that for 60-80 more hours when there are other games to play that won't waste my time nearly as much.
I'm ready for it, I enjoyed the first game a lot, so I have high hopes for this one. I know is not relevant to this news, but it's amazing that we're getting a sequel to this game and we still don't know when will the sequel of Hollow Knight arrive.
@nkarafo Interestingly enough it is the opposite for me largely. That awesome and difficult final boss was worth the hours of grinding. It took me ages and was frustrating and unfair as hell. But once i beat it, it really felt soo satisfying. Although i just hate the fact that you have to beat all those 8 bosses again and again beforehand... Now that was just tedious
@FX102A Trust me, the "tie-in" was a weird, hamfisted thing that is better left untouched. Hope they don't do the same thing here.
This is a game best play on Switch and PC as you get the best experience with you all the time any time anywhere. On Xbox and PS5 it's just way too limited, having wasted power and lacking experience.
@Serpenterror also PS5 doesn’t have the 1st game lmao.
Completed by 90% and a price tag for CE edition to follow it as well. The huge CE price is alot just for bust images and nothing more like steelcase or such but artbook/cd and basic Maps? I might fork for it but common squx....??
So we could say it's... "7.2-path traveler" right now? 😝
@garfreek Oh cool, I missed that! Thanks!
@WreckitRyan re:/140-6 days unchained..
yhea!
I really liked the first one, but it is a seriously tough sell to ask someone to play a game for 50 hours before the story actually starts to emerge. I hope they get to the point a little faster with the second.
