Update: We originally reported that the Super Mario Bros. animated movie had not received an official release date prior to New York Comic Con's announcement. However, Nintendo revealed back in April 2022 that the film will launch on 7th April 2023 in North America and 28th April in Japan.

Original article: Illumination's upcoming animated Super Mario Bros. movie has finally nailed down a release date. The film will be released on 7th April 2023, according to New York Comic Con's official Twitter account (which Illumination has also retweeted).
After a little bit of a palaver around the release window just a few weeks ago, the film has settled into its Spring window very nicely. Plus, we'll be getting a first look at the film at next month's New York Comic Con.
On 6th October at 4pm EST, New York Comic Con attendees will be able to watch a teaser for Mario's cinematic return.
Those of us who won't be attending the show may have to wait a little longer to see what direction Illumination is taking the Italian plumber and friends in (with Nintendo's guidance, of course), but if we had to guess, it won't be much longer until the world sees more of him.
Initial reception to the film's announcement was mixed, with a cast consisting of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser, but the hype is beginning to build. And hey, now we know when we'll be able to go and see the film and grab our bag of popcorn!

I hope the rumours of it being a musical are true. Jack Black as Bowser singing about his hate for Mario would be too perfect
It's the studio behind the Minions... The best that we can expect is "tolerable".
There is still nothing in this world that will convince me this movie is going to be good, and if this trailer blows, I will be there to flavor my popcorn with the Internet’s salt!
Well I'm excited.
Two more weeks of blissful ignorance.
@strollin_stu No it's being produced completely by them, just like any other Illumination film. With input from Nintendo obviously.
Oh god, here we go. The thing that will determine it all. Although I honestly have very, very, VERY low expectations thanks to the studio behind this.
There is a lot riding on this one. If this flops, regardless of quality, there will probably be another 30 years before we see the next Nintendo movie adaptaiton.
Switch Pro confirmed.
I hope this will be the first movie from Illumination I think is actually good. I would love to have a Mario movie thats good good and not so bad its almost funny.
Trailer begins. We see Mario being thrown from a cliff by Bowser...
"Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation."
Oh sweet Jesus it's actually coming.
I just want to see Donkey Kong.
@IronMan30
The Mario movie was only delayed to April 2023 to coincide with the launch of the Movie Theater Pro
@westman98 makes sense.
@strollin_stu
According to the iMDB page, the writer is Matthew Fogel.
He wrote exactly FOUR movies, according to iMDB: Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son, a pilot for a series that was probably not sold (because it says "Untitled Pilot" in iMDB), The Lego Movie 2 (shared with Chris Miller and Phil Lord), and Minions: The Rise of Gru.
So... yeah, not a good resume.
I don't know if I'm ready.
@Patchanka Apparently the head of story is someone named Ed Skudder.
Illumination gets a terrible rep, and I understand why. They milked the cash cow that is the Minions and have pumped out countless movies with bland visuals and scripts no one bothered to proofread. But with that said, the first Despicable Me is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. It's hysterically funny and has some incredibly heartwarming moments. Illumination came out strong with their first feature film, but once it proved to be a hit, it's like they just stopped trying after that. The studio has so much talent and potential--they just don't like to use it. I know they can make a good Mario movie if Nintendo holds them under the same scrutiny as their third-party developers, like they did with Mercury Steam to make sure Metroid lived up to their high standards in quality. So, I'm hopeful.
I remember the leaks that came out about the Sonic Movie years ahead of its debut trailer, and all the negative comments people were saying about it at each stage of development. "They're making a Sonic movie? It's gonna be a disaster, worse than the fan film!" "They're getting Jim Carrey to play Eggman? What a weird mash-up, there's no way that's gonna pan out." "Sony gave up on the movie and turned it over to Paramount? Sounds like things were going terribly. That can't be a good sign." "Did you SEE Sonic's legs in that teaser image? This is going to be terrifying." "Sonic looks soooo bad, and why does the trailer have Gangster's Paradise playing? Watching this day one just for the memes." But the final product was actually really solid.
Another prime example--Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. "Nintendo is making a turn-based Mario crossover with Rabbids? That sounds terrible!" "Rabbid Peach using a cell phone? This is hot garbage! Talk about cringe!" Then everyone went on to love it.
Could this movie be a disaster? Sure. But I think I'm a lot more optimistic about it than most people. Nintendo quit doing licensed shows and movies for decades because of how things like the Mario Bros. Movie and Zelda cartoon were seen as detrimental to their brand. It's taken them this long to open back up, and I'm sure they're gonna be VERY strict about how the Mario universe is represented...for better or worse. So, Illumination might not be allowed to take too many creative liberties, but Nintendo is probably also gonna keep things like Mario and Luigi dabbing for a TikTok video out of the movie. So, it's a double-edged sword. I expect a movie that plays things relatively safe. It might not win any awards for best animated feature, but I also don't think it will be something Nintendo fans rag on foe the next 20 years. At worst, the movie will be just okay.
This will either be the next Ugly Sonic, just OK, or shockingly good. As long as I can live with the characters not sounding the same, I'm willing to give it a chance so long as the characters are still faithful, which Nintendo claims to really care about. For the sake of more Nintendo movies and shows, I hope it works. I'm just glad that they won't drop the trailer on a random day.
Oh my God.
I just name-checked the directors that appear in the iMDB page...
And they are the Teen Titans Go! producers.
Relax, all, Nintendo is also behind the movie.
And they have a seal of quality still for their own products (especially Mario). I don’t think the movie will be garbage. Not good either, but not complete garbage. Enjoyable.
When’s the last time Nintendo released a big pile of poo? I can’t really remember. Everything is at least mediocre at worst in my opinion.
...Guys, I'm scared, I'm not ready...
I've heard that this movie is going to run at a stuttery 24FPS, and I for one think that is an outrage in 2022! It should be 60FPS minimum, but it's not even a highly advanced animated film like a Pixar or WDA, so they should even be able to run it at 120FPS.
sarcasm of course, if you need to be told
I'll happily play Mario and Sonic games, but I won't see them at the cinema. Just me?
@Patchanka And many terrible fart jokes.
@Friendly Nintendo was also behind the original "Super Mario Bros" movie. That says nothing.
When do we think the teaser will be released outside of Comic Con?
There's only one Mario to me, and his name is Bob Hoskins.
@RR529 you forgot about variable resolution, high action scenes might look like they're covered in vaseline.
@sanderev that’s ages ago though
looking forward to it and cautiously optimistic 👍
I am deeply concerned and curious as to what they're going to do with the toads. Because if there is anybody other than goombas that could get a minion style makeover it's them, possibly even with full on N64 Toad voice.
@PanFriedSoup What about Captain Lou Albano?
And here we are. Two more weeks before it's here, at freaking last. The wait will be an agony.
Finally, but I hope we see a good trailer, and not just a teaser. A teaser could show us just the shadow of Mario or Mario's hand grabbing a mushroom.
Better be worth the wait… Sadly that’ll probably be the end of the Chris Pratt as Mario memes, since we’ll see how he is. Then again, if he does suck we can keep meming.
@SmileMan64 I was an toddler when the Super Mario Bros Super Show was on the air, so it didn't resonate with me as much as the acid-laced fever dream that's the 1993 film. I swear that movie needs a Criterion (or Arrow) release.
This totally reminded me. WTF ever happened to Detective Pikachu? I've never seen the movie but it seems like that setting had so much potential as far as Nintendo films go.
Finally, cant wait.
Footage has already leaked:
Just as long as it isn't anything like that terrible movie with Bob Hoskins that was nothing like the games at all I'll be happy.
sucks seth rogen is in this, its almost a deal breaker as annoying as that guy is
It's pass for me... Im boycotting the film due to some actors in the film i really hate.. so it's a hard pass for me but i hope anyone who does watching i hope you enjoy it... shame Nintendo had to cast some actors i have boycotted over the years but i stand my ground... #boycottingMarioMovie
@BASEDSAKRI He is one of the reasons i will never watch the film
You have to buy the Switch 2 to watch it I heard.
No matter whether or not it makes sense to be excited for this movie, I'm crazy excited to see it.
I can see this being super safe or completely breaking the internet like Ugly Sonic
But they can just record the trailer and upload it on the internet, can't they?
I wish I could get more excited but it's only the teaser. Right?
Illumination has a bad rep, it's true, but this film is gonna be directed by the same guy that directed Teen Titans go to the Movies, and that movie is awesome, and i don't even like the tv show, but the movie is very good.
Excellent. A month before my son's birthday and he is an enormous Mario fan. The whole family loves Mario honestly! We will definitely be going to see this one.
Fingers crossed, I’m excited! Even if it isn’t the best movie, jack black as bowser baby!
@Patchanka At least there animation recently looks really good actually.
@larryisaman I hope so too!
To be honest ONE of the reasons I want this film to do good is to watch the Chris Pratt haters foam at the mouth.
The other reasons: Come on, it's a Mario movie, why wouldn't you want it to be good?
Do I like all the actors involved? No( Not a fan of Seth Rogen after his Santa inc disaster) but I'm still gonna watch it.
"Those of us who won't be attending the show may have to wait a little longer to see what direction Illumination is taking the Italian plumber and friends in" - I'm pretty sure the trailer will be officially unveiled online within a few hours after its showing at NYCC. If not, then a day or two after NYCC.
@Dev9417 It'll be shockingly good since Nintendo is involved.
@Joeynator3000 Why?
@sanderev That was 30 years ago. Nintendo has changed a lot since then.
@kalosn "But they can just record the trailer and upload it on the internet, can't they?" - Yeah.
If true that the teen titans producers are behind this, it will be solid if not very good. On the other hand, i cant see how someone can screw this one, Never Mario have been about story or cannon. Just make it charming, jump on some koopas and goombas, boom!! Instant success 😊
I'm really excited to see what they do.
Its about time we get a tease.
"Minions" was ...crazy. I saw part of it at a volunteer event. I've seen "Sing" a ton because of a class I worked in. So Sing grew on me, and "Sing 2" was good so I watched "Despicable Me" and that was good, too. I think they're gonna pull off a good movie. I think it'll look good, too.
Hopes:
-lots so sets with moving parts
-tons of goombas
-credits better be "Do the Mario"
-Wario and Waluigi were born to be animated by Illumination
-Mario must jump on a Minion as intro
-a new powerup, it does something so cool it ends up in the next game
-work Mariokart into the story
-yeah, that's all, but I wish we see Geno
I have faith in it, especially with Nintendo working closely with Illumination this time. Don't forget the 1993 one didn't really have Nintendo working with them. The guy who had worked it was given a free creative license, so he did whatever with it. And the screenwriters tried doing a Ghostbuster-y thing with it.
I think the movie will be just fine, Nintendo learned their lesson when it came to their characters and movies about them. I heard/read that Bowser wasn't even going to be in Wreck-It-Ralph unless he was animated properly with how he held his teacup.
So seeing how Nintendo is working with Ilumination, and how happy Nintendo is their cast (whenever I read about Nintendo and the movie they have nothing but praise for Mr. Pratt and everyone) I feel like everything is going to be fine.
I'm excited for it.
I'll wait until the Nintendo bigwigs themselves say that the movie is good before passing judgment.
I sincerely hope this trailer isn't exclusive to NYCC. It is one of the stupidest marketing tactics that Disney still uses for SDCC and I absolutely despise having to either patiently avoid trailer spoilers or watch poorly recorded leaks.
@PanFriedSoup I see. Well, hopefully you give Super Show and Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 another chance one day. They're good shows. Not great, but good enough.
@ModdedInkling It'll most likely get officially uploaded online not too long after its unveil at NYCC.
@PinkScepter98 Detective Pikachu was already shockingly good
My kids are obsessed with Sing and Sing 2 at the moment and tbh I quite enjoy them too so I was cautiously optimistic for this film. But then The Rise of Gru was a steaming turd so my optimism has dissipated somewhat.
@kalosn Right. Therefore, the Mario movie will also be shockingly good.
I was born in the late 80s. I remember things. I remember the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, both in original audio and dubbed in Finnish. I still have the VHS for the Super Mario Bros. movie. I watched the OG animation of Mario this year when I heard it was on YouTube.
In essence, Charles Martinet's iconic performance as Mario is a relative newcomer for me when it comes to Mario's vocal profile.
So, I will have an open mind when it comes to this movie and Pratt's performance as the moustachioed plumber, but I will bring my whole baggage train as to what I expect of the setting.
