Splatoon 3 isn't officially out until next month, but it seems Nintendo is already taking action against cheaters. Well-known Nintendo dataminer OatmealDome has revealed the company's anti-cheat measures are already in place for Splatoon 3 - targeting players who modify the new entry in the series.
It seems Nintendo is issuing console bans (possibly including a "total ban" from the Nintendo Switch Online service). OatmealDome goes on to explain how there was a certain patch being "shared around" that allowed players to enter the testing range early in this weekend's Splatfest demo, which has probably resulted in bans.
So, there you have it - cheating of any form (no matter how big or small) will not be tolerated in Splatoon 3. Nintendo originally added an anti-cheat system to Splatoon 2 back in 2018. This included integrity checks where the system would actively search for users who were running mods in their own game, and would then flag the account.
If we hear any updates about the latest anti-cheat measures in Splatoon 3, we'll let you know.

Nintendo banning cheaters? Love that for them
They’re really speedrunning ban% huh? Busted before the game’s even out is impressive.
In unrelated news, saw Ollie got quoted in an actual BBC News story about Mario Kart. Hitting the big time!
Don't cheat. It's a kids' shooting game with squids and ink.
Have some dignity, people.
Anyone who cheats in an online videogame needs to stop playing videogames and re-evaluate their pathetic lives.
Seriously, sort yourselves out as it's just sad.
"Everybody is cheater!...Except for me!" - Waluigi
I am very much against cheating in competitive online games.
But man... I do want inside the test chamber early, ngl
good and if they pre-ordered the game ban them from cancelling the pre-order hehe (jking ik they legally can't do that)
Good on them, gotta hate cheaters in online games
Nice to see the banning start early. Tho I do thank them for there sacrifice.
Good to see them cracking down hard. Even if there's nothing to even cheat at yet, it sends a message that it won't be tolerated. Nothing worse for an online game than being overrun by cheaters who ruin it for everyone else.
Can i play the splat fest yet
Imagine getting banned before the game even comes out. 😂
Cheaters can play this online game, pirate version?
I'm confused, how does this count as cheating?
They're just finding an exploit that lets them play certain content in the game early, and even then it's just the testing range.
I guess you could make the argument that the unfair advantage is them getting practice in before everyone else.. but so does content creators getting the game early.
And this game will get inevitably get leaked and loads more people will play this game early and probably won't be affected by this at all.
That said I hope the anti cheat isn't just for policing the modding communities fun and is for actual cheating like all the invincible players in splatoon 1 that couldn't be killed.
@iLikeUrAttitude I don’t think there are humans actually banning these people, I think it’s just the anti cheat doing it’s thing. I’m pretty sure that without an anti cheat they wouldn’t get banned
@OnlyItsMeReid True but to what extent? Does it target people just trying to find exploits to play content early and/or actual cheaters with an unfair advantage?
Or is it targeting people with modded switches, which is it actual problem.
I mean why do you have to cheat ?
Just only to show off your selfishness ?
Not sure why people kept wanting to cheat in an online competitive game like this, it only ruin the game for everyone else.
@iLikeUrAttitude If you read the article it's people playing with a modified version of the game.
This isn't a player clipping out of bounds to access content. It's purposeful modification of the game to access things they shouldn't.
Now they have that splatoon ban sorted they can move onto banning people like oatmealdome.
I guess this was oatmealdome just warning all his mates.
@Dr_Lugae Again mods can count as modifying the game, I'm just trying to see what the extent of the anti cheat covers.
@iLikeUrAttitude To be honest, patches (e.g. modification of the game code) is against Nintendo's terms of service they've already met nan requirements. As for how much they're cheating.. yes they will get more practice on the game & get an edge. Early promotional copies of the game are a necessary evil so it's understandable that Nintendo allow them so it's in no way a moral equivalent. Plus if someone is playing a modded copy of a game you can't necessarily tell everything that mod is doing so if Nintendo allowed "some" mods, they may as well allow all of them.
I think the three or four matches my friends and I played against invincible instant spawning inklings on Splat2 were enough to make me take several months off.
How utterly despicable!
....that being sad I maaaaaaay have looked at a lot of said tweets/videos of people trying out the test range before today but don't tell a soul OK? I just wanted to see the new kits man....
Oh no. Imagine being banned from NSO. No more expensive rom rentals.
EXACTLY why I hated playing on the Wii Online with Mario Kart Wii, Hackers/Cheaters using homebrew to mod Mario Kart Wii to Cheat online. I hated the wii ever since! EXACTLY why I'll never play pc games online. Cheaters should be BANNED Forever.
This goes to show that cheaters never prosper.🤷♂️
@iLikeUrAttitude Anti cheat is the hotter name, but it's really an anti modification measure. The process doesn't discern between what you are arguing as harmless modding and blatant cheating. Any modifications to the original game are against their terms.
Cheating is cheating. And violating TOS is violations. You don't make the rules.
Good serves them right seriously why do people need to cheat cause they know they suck at multiplayer games.
At the very least, you gotta admire the dedication these guys have to cheating. I mean, how many people can say they got banned from something before it released.
@iLikeUrAttitude They aren’t “finding an exploit”, they’re using modified versions of the game, so of course the cheat detectors would think that’s unusual. Pretty sure it’s illegal as well? I don’t know much about law, but it’s definitely against Nintendo’s/Splatoon’s rules.
@iLikeUrAttitude It’s literally just targeting modded versions of the game, because the blatantly obvious implication is that mods can be used to cheat, as everyone knows.
And given how prevalent and obnoxious cheating has been in the previous two games, a zero-tolerance policy on these people is the only acceptable/workable option. The system that’s designed to catch modded games isn’t going to discern if someone’s “just tinkering around for fun” or weigh whether or not they deserve to get banned for it. If you want to have fun, don’t do it in a way that can ruin everyone else’s fun.
Glad I decided not to take part in this crap today and instead I decided to play the new DLC courses in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online. I stopped playing Splatoon 2 because of cheaters and Pokèmon is bursting at the seams with them too. I absolutely despise these people.
Good. Anyone who cheats in an online multiplayer game should have permanent bans immediately. No second chances.
I used to play call of duty up until ghost on ps4 but the cheating just turned me off of the whole series. I played splatoon 2 when it first come out and cheating was all over it. Now that I know this is being stopped I will purchase splatoon 3 for sure.
Nintendo needs to partner with Apple so Nintendo can track their phones and hunt down the cheaters
If you have to cheat to win that means your a Looser to start with in the first place. Win or lose that's how games are played not everyone gets 1st place. You learn and play to win next time.
Don't ban them, just label them and put them all in the same game constantly.
@Browny
It's more than just a kids game. Kids can play it but just because it uses more than gray, brown and black and doesn't have blood doesn't make it only a kid's game
@jaybird0922
Why do they have to team up with Apple, the Nintendo Online app gives them access to your phone to track you down lol
@steventonysmith because apple tracks you every way known to man
