Update [Fri 5th Aug, 2022 04:30 BST]: This is your reminder that this special Tetris 99 event will begin later today. It's well worth participating if you have missed out on some past events, as each theme will only require you to earn 10 event points per round. You can see what's on offer in the original post below.
Original article [Tue 2nd Aug, 2022 02:25 BST]: Nintendo has just announced the Switch Online game Tetris 99 will be hosting its 30th Maximus Cup. It kicks off this Friday on 5th August and will give players a "second chance" at unlocking themes they may have missed out on before.
Instead of having to earn 100 event points for each theme, this time around you'll only have to earn 10 event points per round - meaning you can quickly snap up multiple themes one after the other. Here's a bit of PR about it:
"Did you miss a recent Maximus Cup? Now's your opportunity to add to your collection on in-game themes! Compete in online battles in Tetris 99 mode and collect at least 10 event points per in-game theme to unlock. Event points awarded based on rank achieved in each battle you compete in during the event."
As you can see, the returning themes include Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Miitopia, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Skyward Sword HD, WarioWare: Get It Together!, and Metroid Dread.
This cup will run from 5th August through to 10th August and will take place in six "back-to-back" rounds. Here's the full schedule:
- Round 1 features the Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury theme as a reward and runs from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 5.
- Round 2 features the Miitopia theme as a reward and runs from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 6.
- Round 3 features the Mario Golf: Super Rush theme as a reward and runs from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 7.
- Round 4 features the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD theme as a reward and runs from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 8.
- Round 5 features the WarioWare: Get It Together! theme as a reward and runs from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 9.
- Round 6 features the Samus Edition theme as a reward and runs from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 10.

Are they seriously not gonna bring back the Super Mario All-Stars one? That makes me legitimately PO'd at Nintendo and their timed exclusivity garbage. I've been waiting a year and a half to get that one, as Mario All-Stars was like the first game I played as a kid, but I had college finals the week of the event. I'm sooooo freaking mad at Nintendo right now. This is so unnecessary.
I have them all. I never miss a T99 tournament weekend, and that means never.
Missing the Bowser's Fury one, time to catch up.
EDIT: Got it. Thank goodness it only takes 10 points to get them. If I have time (I'm on a rather tiring trip right now), I'll unlock the Miitopia theme for my nephew and sister. I'm sure they'll like the sound effects.
Hooray, I missed out on Skyward Sword and was hoping I'd get another chance.
At last, a reason to use my 7-day trial. Now I’m especially glad that I didn’t squander it straight away. I was burned several times in the past where I’d burn off a 7-day trial only for a new Tetris 99 theme to come along the following weekend.
It’s also a sad reflection of just how little NSO has to offer, especially when this sort of thing used to be free in the past. The fact that Nintendo doesn’t allow for other NSO features such as icon customisation options to be unlocked during a free trial only further puts me off from ever subscribing.
But on the plus side, I’m especially looking forward to those tasty Miitopia and WarioWare themes (I’ve missed out on ALL of the above).
It's too bad Nintendo doesn't do Maximus cups for Pac-Man 99... "Get gud" at Tetris 99 is not likely in my future. lol
@Not_Soos Aren't they all available now as ticket unlocks? You don't need to unlock them with event, it's just much quicker and easier.
I wish they brought back the 2nd chances for the Splatoon & Fire Emblems themes since those are the only 2 I missed out on.
I've missed a couple events but I think I have all of these ones. I hope they periodically do these events with more of the old themes.
@thinkhector I'm like 99% sure the Mario All-Stars theme was one like the Bowser's Fury theme and the other ones listed here where they haven't been brought back into the game until now. So I'm pretty certain it's still MIA.
@thinkhector Yeah, unfortunately for some of them, if you didn't play that weekend, you cannot go in and buy it. You are only able to go in and buy with tickets if you played that event but didn't hit 100 points. I am super excited for this because I have all of them but 4 of them listed here so I can finally collect the set!
I only miss a old Pokemon theme. Got everything else.
I was actually expecting a new theme for Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
@Not_Soos @FishyS @majinx07 Check again! I was missing Theme 12 and it just let me trade tickets for the theme. I haven’t played since the last cup, but it didn’t let me do that before.
Theme 11 is the 3D All Stars one.
EDIT: The previous update was April 2022. The release notes didn’t mention it specifically, but maybe that is when they expanded the number of themes that you could trade for tickets. With the April 2021 update, it was only themes 1-10.
I was only missing theme 12, so I don’t know what newer themes are now available for trade.
@Tandy255 My guess is if there is one, it was planned for after its original September release, so maybe then?
No Xenoblade Chronicles 3 theme? 😢
@Tandy255 I just checked, and theme 11 still does not seem to be there. Maybe @SoIDecidedTo is right that I needed to have participated in the event first in order to be eligible to buy it with tickets. If so, that's incredibly stupid of Nintendo to do.
Argh. I’m only missing theme 22.
Bring back the prizes for the grand prixes!
Need to check which ones I'm missing. Hopefully this will check a few off the list.
@Not_Soos Yaiye, timed exclusivity, yaiye! Probably the worst kind of exclusivity, and fitting that the game package (3D All Stars) too was available for a limited time - what an age to live in!
On a personal note, I am pretty certain I have got all the themes released till now, but will jump back in - after all Tetris 99 and cloud saves are the only reasons I am still subscribed to NSO.
Looks like I'm only missing the Mario Golf theme. Nice.
Was the last theme #22 for Kirby Forgotten Land? I'm hoping I haven't missed any, but I'd have thought there would have been one for Mario Strikers by now.
I'm assuming there could be a Xenoblade 3 one as well soon.
That or they could just bring back Super Mario Bros. 35!! Loved that and such a shame it was discontinued.
Can’t wait for this!
Would it be possible at all to add a little built in time zone converter every time you announced times like these? Every time it’s the same hassle to check and double check if I got it right. I can’t imagine I’m the only one?
I'm missing 5 special themes. Annoyingly only one of them is in this event. Looks like I can buy one of the others now though, so that's something.
@Not_Soos Well that stinks. I am not sure then. I don’t think I played in the cup for the first Kirby theme. I think I forgot all about it and is why I didn’t have it.
I had 30 tickets saved up and ready to go. I mostly just play the Maximus cups, but would check the themes each time to see if it was available or if I had missed something. Something has changed this year.
@Pachrisu Which one were you able to get? And which ones can you not get? For me, I got theme 12 (and it was locked for quite a while). @Not_Soos says that theme 11 still isn’t available.
@Tandy255 It was 12 for me as well.
I'm missing 11, 12, 17, 18, 22
@majinx07 You can get them still though? They cost 30 tickets each. They've been available that way for quite some time.
They really underutilize Tetris 99. Very easily could have an Event every month between Themes for new releases, Themes for old releases they didn't have Events for, catch up Events, & competitions to keep people coming back.
Well I checked what themes I had, and it turns out I just happen to be missing 13, 14, and 15. (Miitopia, Mario Golf, Skyward Sword.) I didn't even know I was missing any, since I thought they had added all the theme as ticket unlocks. (Looks like Mario All-Stars is also one you can't get from tickets, which I just learned, but that's not one I am missing.)
@Not_Soos I went back and played the Mario All-Stars theme. You are going to very disappointed when you get it. It's by far the worse special theme. The problem is that it's too similar to the 8bit Mario. The theme is slightly remixed and the visuals are less interesting. I mean I hope they bring it back for completeionist sake, but for those who don't have it, you won't be using it much once you do.
@thinkhector As for bad themes, the Pokémon Arceus theme is pretty unplayable. The brick colors and the background blend in together making it difficult to see where the gaps are in the stack.
@Tandy255 Maybe. But the music from the Arceus theme is awesome! And the art work is fantastic, and the blocks themselves have cool designs on them. None of the is true for Mario All-Stars. The blocks are super plain and the music is reused from Mario 8-bit. And the art work is less iconic than Mario 8-bit. And here is the weird part. Nintendo was releasing themes to time with the launch of new games. Why did we even get Mario All-Stars??? It should have been, and I think everyone will agree, the theme SHOULD have been Mario 3D All-Stars! Imagine how cool that theme would have been!
You know how Nintendo delayed Advanced Wars? I wonder if we were also suppose to get a Tetris Theme when it launched because that's usually how it went.
I went a year plus without online, so this is a welcome sight having newed a few weeks back.
@thinkhector You might be right on Advanced Wars. I was surprised we never got a Pikmin 3 theme. The Pikmin death sound would be perfect for when you lose the game.
I agree with everything you said about the Pokémon Arceus theme. For me, the colors just overlap too much and I make more mistakes.
@Not_Soos I agree, I do not think that is a wise decision on Nintendo's part. I think if you participated and didn't get it, 30 tickets is fine. If you didn't even try then pay 45 tickets or something like that.
Just need the Miitopia, Mario Golf and Skyward Sword themes to complete the set (got 3d world theme just now). There's already a Xenoblade theme so they might not bother doing one for XC3.
@thinkhector I thought the lack of new themes was a result of it being very rare that Nintendo supports their games for that long. Top 3 longest supported non-mobile Nintendo games are:
1. MK8 (May 2014 - April 2015, April 2017 - September 2018 and March 2022 - Holiday 2023)
2. Tetris 99 (February 2019 - April 2022)
3. Smash Ultimate (December 2018 - October 2021)
@Grumblevolcano Yeah but Nintendo averages a first party every two months. That's a crazy amount of output. Spending time adding more content to older titles would take away time from people working on new games. So you have to balance that.
I need maximus cup #27 (Mario Party SuperStars) & #29 (Kirby Forgotten Land). This week's event is useless.
Looks like I've got all of them, although I had to redownload the game to make sure.😆 Still, such catchup events are always welcome, although I hope something new (read: a Xenoblade 3 theme) is still in the plans as well. And on that note, some XC3 SMBU spirits would be nice as well!
I need 3 of these, so that is most welcome!
I wish the Monster Hunter theme was part of this. I was out of town that weekend and forgot to bring my Switch.
Will they ever just put the past themes up for "sale" on the theme shop??
