Today's Splatoon 3 Direct revealed a whole bunch of new details about the upcoming splatter, including new amiibo and the announcement of a pre-release Splatfest, but it also revealed the new hosts who will introduce the stages when you fire up the game — and this time it's a trio.
Replacing Pearl and Marina from Splatoon 2, Deep Cut is the musical outfit that will be giving you the details once you get past the title screen of the new entry. Continuing the series' trend of musical hosts — with the 'Squid Sisters' Callie and Marie acting as presenters in the first game, Deep Cut is made up of Shiver, Frye, and Big Man.
You can check out the trio performing 'Anarchy Rainbow' in the video at the top of the page, and here's a better look at the new presenters from Nintendo of America's tweet, starting with Shiver:
Deep Cut will have their work cut out for them if they're going to overtake fan-favourites Pearl and Marina in the popularity stakes. But hey, if they can cut down their pre-match jabber — or even make it skippable! — they could well shoot straight to the top of our charts! Update: It looks like "except for special broadcasts" you'll be able to get cracking in Splatsville while you listen to the Deep Cut bulletin. Phew!
Let us know below if you think Deep Cut has what it takes to beat the Squid Sisters and Pearl and Marina.

I like these 3. Hopefully they don't turn evil or get abducted.
They NEED to get amiibo, because I NEED to have them in my collection! All 3 great designs!
Frye's forehead is huge lol. It's cool there are three idols now.
I wonder if Shiver was in part inspired by a certain V-Tuber…?
Big Man is love, Big Man is life
It always takes me a while to get used to the new idol group, but I'm sure I'll get accustomed to Deep Cut in due time. I'll definitely miss Pearl and Marina, though.
I am honestly not really feeling these three. Pearl and Marina still the best set so far, but none of them really wowed me.
I love them! And they’re consistent with the ‘3’ theme by adding Big Man (whom, as a ray, is also triangle-shaped)
New idols are good, people kept insisting that there wouldn't be any but after 2, I figured it'd happen.
Also, that manta/sting ray is awesome.
Edit: and not to give oxygen to another article that I refuse to click on but yes, Nintendo has justified Splatoon 3's existence enough. There are new maps, weapons, idols and splatfests. All of which fit into the theme of the final splatfest, which was how 2 continued on from 1. The only reason you ask that question is because most Nintendo MP focused franchises receive one entry per generation. There is no hard and fast rule for or against that, as seen with Mario Kart 8 because before then there were no ports of multiplayer focused games on newer consoles. Ask yourself a better question. If Nintendo put Splatoon 3 on Switch 2, would you even wonder if it should or shouldn't exist? You know the answer is no, so why ask if it's justified?
I want there hair styles! Give them to me!
They all look great. To be real, I want Shiver to bite me with her cool fangs.
I am NOT a fan of Frye. At all.
(shudder)
Deep Cut amiibo three-pack when?
After Pearl and now Frye, someone on the Splatoon dev team is REALLY into foreheads...
big man's the only real notable member designwise, feel like there might be some sort of rakugo joke with shiver that's lost in translation given her appearance on the news
similarly, the splatfest feels more "matsuri"-esque than "idol performance"-esque this time
I like the big manta ray. The other two are weird…. Especially the yellow demon monkey one.
Really like Shiver and Big man, Frye is growing on me much like Pearl did.
Is it just me though....or is Frye a Manta Ray kid? She doesn't have any suckers in her hair and her ears are very different and reminiscent of the manta's 'wings'.
Big Man is the one true waifu. Frye and Shiver are great too, though.
Like Frye's belly dancer outfit. Can't wait for the inevitable Shantae crossover fanart.
I want amiibos of these characters right now please 🥲
Yesssss I love these idols
i like how foreheads are just a things with the idols now lol. i adore them. i wonder how they'll tie into the story if squid sisters are in the main one, and off the hook are for the paid dlc
I've always wanted to hear a stingray sing in a third person shooter game.
I already love them. Frye looks like a cute Arabian dancer while Shiver gives me cool geisha vibes kind of like Marie. Big Man might just be a big manta ray but I like how Splatoon 3 seems to be making anthropomorphic fish play bigger, more visible roles.
Now I can’t help but wonder if they could be in a story mode. Return of the Mammalians already has the Squid Sisters and the major paid DLC is more than likely another story with Off the Hook like Octo Expansion.
Big Man is of course the best, but the other two are a little iffy for me. I think Shiver is ok, but Frye is not my favorite.
We went into the Direct not knowing what sets Splatoon 3 apart from Splatoon 2, and to be honest...I still don't see the compelling hook for why I need to buy this game when I already have Splatoon on my Switch. Three-way splatfests was pretty much the only compelling new feature. It's cool, but not worth buying a whole new game for. It really just looks like 60 bucks for more of the same. If we want more than the bare minimum, we have to pay an additional fee for the DLC. I probably won't buy the game until the DLC releases and they confirm it will be free with the Expansion Pass. I also didn't like how the voiceover lady kept saying "in-game currency." To me, the only reason they'd feel the need to use that kind of specific language is if they were keeping the door open for microtransactions.
Overall, I thought it was one of Nintendo's weakest Directs they've ever had. The first 15 minutes were mostly spent discussing modes and features we already knew about. Sorry if I'm being a downer--it seems like most people here had a positive opinion of the presentation. Remember it's just my opinion, so please don't roast me over it. If you thought it was fantastic, that's amazing.
One positive thing I could say is that whatever Treehouse person they got to narrate the presentation, I think she killed it. There was still a little bit of that Nintendo cringe I've come to expect from Nintendo voiceovers, but that comes down to the script itself more than how she carried herself. I think she has a real talent for voiceover work and would love to see (hear?) more of her in the future.
Big fan of Big Man.
I love the new idols though. I'd say Shiver is my current favourite purely from a design perspective and Frye, whilst admittedly having a forehead that could span the oceans, seems like she'll be the lovably peppy type.
Wait, haven't I been here before?
(jokes aside, I love all three of them)
This might be a hot take, but they are already my favorite hosts of the series.
I liked the Squid Sisters, but these are cool too.
More importantly, who's judging on the new game. Did they show that? First we had Judd, then Li'l Judd; .....baby Judd?
The new music is more my speed so I expect to be a fan of this trio. Frye is so cool!
@dkxcalibur They're both back, but now they're spiky.
I'm pretty sure the new gremlin flipped her eyes upside-down just so she could fit in more forehead. Other than that, the new additions seem cool, but not really exciting. For being the third game in the series, it doesn't feel like it's grown much from the first one.
THEY COULD OF CALLED THE RAY MAN-RAY! Missed opportunity...
Not sure about the two new girls. The last two seemed way more likable. I do like the giant singing manta ray though.
I love Deep Cut's fusion of traditional style with the Splatlands' urban overall theme!
Someone compared Shiver to Adaman from Legends Arceus, and I love it. She's now my favorite, but I also like how unique Frye is. A lot of people online don't get that it's a very Japanese sensibility to create something beautiful, but with a clear imperfection, and that the imperfection is what makes something special.
@Marioracer Or better yet, RAY MAN.
Big Man is the character I never knew I needed until now.
It doesn’t scream Splatoon to me, more of like Japanese 3D character, which I get since the creators are of a different culture but still doesn’t really feel like splatoon to me. Can’t really tell who’s and octoling and who’s and inkling. The eyes in both are kinda weird, and I think they could’ve come up with a better name than just “big man” for the manta ray thing. Back to the eyes, one thing I noticed is that with inkling their eyes are kinda like outlined with like a superhero mask shape, whereas octoling their eyes are separate. But neither were really like that. I think they could improve with the designs and maybe shiver name could have been a bit different. I think they could’ve come up with something better than “deep cut” but it’s not bad. Definitely I think they could improve the whole thing.
I've looked through so many comment sections on youtube about Splatoon 3 and have yet to see a single complaint about how ugly the new idols are so fine I guess I'll be the one to say it; Frye is the single ugliest thing I have seen to come out of the Splatoon franchise I'm sorry but she makes me wanna gouge my eyes out. And Shiver doesn't look too great either. But Big man seems pretty cool.
@thom1414 Thank you so much I thought I was the only one. Literally every one seemed to like her. She is utterly terrifying and will haunt me in my dreams.
Big Man is love, Big Man is life.
