We've got the latest Japanese charts, courtesy of Gematsu, and it's a corker of a week for the newly released Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak DLC! The pack containing the main game and the expansion has comfortably taken the top spot in the charts with an almighty 104,315 units sold, beating out Nintendo Switch Sports by more than 80,000 units.
Elsewhere, Gran Turismo 7 has rejoined the top ten, marking the only blip in an otherwise Switch-centric offering. Mario Strikers: Battle League is still clinging on in last place, though with the release of KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series this week, the soccer title will likely drop further for next week's charts.
Here's a look at this week's charts in full:
1. [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak Set – 104,315 / NEW
2. [NSW] Nintendo Switch Sports – 20,169 / 532,470
3. [NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes – 17,841 / 115,379
4. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 9,937 / 4,701,588
5. [NSW] Kirby and the Forgotten Land – 8,887 / 786,697
6. [PS5] Gran Turismo 7 – 8,169 / 117,694
7. [NSW] Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles – 7,872 / 130,384
8. [NSW] Minecraft – 7,444 / 2,691,916
9. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure – 7,101 / 3,195,829
10. [NSW] Mario Strikers: Battle League – 5,953 / 58,816
Onto the hardware sales for this week, and goodness, the PlayStation 5 has seen a pretty healthy boost, selling a respectable 20,028 units and knocking the humble Switch Lite down to fourth place. The Switch OLED model has also nearly doubled its sales from the previous week, no doubt in conjunction with the monumental release of the Monster Hunter Sunbreak DLC. Good going all 'round, then!

- Switch – 28,063 (18,446,910)

How dare Sony wiggle its way onto Nintendo's top ten chart with Gran Turismo 7. Kindly keep your live service trash off this list, Sony.
Sunbreak is absolutely fantastic. The base game was highly replayable already and had a considerable amount of misisons if you really did everything. Sunbreak doubled that quantity and on top of that it was done with quality.
I am not surprised one bit. Literally just finished Sunbreak myself, and its fantastic just like Rise was. Still wish they would have released a version physical version with DLC included on the cartridge and not a code, but oh well. Its a great combo for newcomers!
I never thought I see the days where PlayStation struggle this badly in Japan especially on the software side of things and this is the console where Japanese craving IPs like Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Tekken, Guilty Gear, Star Ocean, the Tales series, Persona, Gran Turismo, Virtua Fighter, Demon's Soul, and anime games dwelve exclusively the most. Why is it struggling? Shouldn't those games be selling like hotcakes on that over there?
@Serpenterror PS5 is an American console for many Japanese customers. Switch fits much better in the lifestyle of many Japanese gamers.
@Serpenterror - Firstly, the PS5 is a chunky device, and Japanese living space is sparse. Secondly, the Playstation brand (although Sony-owned) is increasingly being recognized as a western-operated portion of Sony's business. The Japanese territory gets the least consideration. Murica and Europe are Playstation-country these days.
Gamers, and journalists, when Nintendo is the top seller: Competition is good! We need more of it! (Which is what I lean towards in all cases).
Gamers, and journalists, when Sony is the top seller: Well, do we REALLY need more than one console on the market? I mean, it's just video games. A monopoly wouldn't be so bad.
I guarantee you when PS5 actually starts consistently outselling Switch (no matter how long that lasts) this will become the general narrative. If Nintendo's next system comes out soon and starts to outsell PS5, I also guarantee you the current narrative will be revived, peppered with "well it's newer, what do you expect?"
Anyway, good to see Nintendo seems to have worked out some supply chain issues.
Very much enjoying Rise (just started about 3 weeks ago) and plan on getting Sunbreak eventually.
The real surprise is seeing Nintendo Switch Sports above the rest of the other first-party games that charted.
Maybe I haven't put attention to the charts, but that feels weird.
NPD - 'Switch is going to be the best selling console in 2022.'
UK - 'Switch hardware sales up 24%'
Japan - well...look at the charts.
Nintendo - 'Switch has a 10 year lifecycle.'
Internet - 'Switch Pro imminent.'
Switch Demon Slayer still hanging on. Hopefully they learn next time and have Demon Slayer 2 day 1. Doubt though.
So Sunbreak is not sold as stand alone expansion physically? Why they dont release digital sale numbers in japan
I think there's a story in here about Xbox Series X selling decently even in a week where PS5 stock was availlable.
Sunbreak is so much fun, it deserves to sell well.
PS5 sales looks good so far. 🙂
