If you tuned into yesterday's Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase then you were probably hoping to catch a glimpse of the GoldenEye 007 remaster – also known as gaming's worst-kept secret.
We know the game exists, but it wasn't announced during the show – but you needn't be too downhearted because indie developer Replicant D6 lifted the lid on a homage to Rare's classic FPS during the PC Gaming Show, which also took place yesterday.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die takes plenty of inspiration from the seminal N64 shooter (and its spiritual successor, Perfect Dark), adopting similar visuals and sound effects. It's sadly only available on PC at present, but we sincerely hope that it makes its way to consoles at a later date, because it looks fantastic. You can download the demo on Steam now.
As for GoldenEye 007, well, the rumour mill doesn't stop just because of one no-show. Fans are now speculating that the game will be shown during an upcoming Nintendo Direct. Others point out that Microsoft has a second show planned for tomorrow, and it could appear there.

I feel like it will be announced this month, but I’m not sure who will be the one to make the call.
I thought Xbox would, and may still, announce it as they’d likely sell their updated version. Then again, Nintendo got license sorted in Europe.
If it ain’t Wednesday (my time as I’m NZ) then will be the next Nintendo Direct
Reminds me more of Perfect Dark, which is a good thing to be honest.
It doesn’t make up for it sadly .
Give the demo a try. It's pretty decent! 🙂
Yet again more rumour mongers getting it wrong.
I believe Goldeneye was always going to be a Nintendo led announcement.
Microsoft announcing a remake for the 3rd best selling game in the N64's library, that hasn't been released for 25 years, and has an enormous fan following just seems very unlikely to me. Irrespective of the development studio and licensing... this is a Nintendo game. Even if Microsoft technically could announce it first for whatever reason, I honestly don't think they would even want to. Simply put, it just makes sense to come from Nintendo first.
I'm hopeful this will get a July launch on NSO+. I noticed Goldeneye is getting screenings at UK cinemas in early August too, as part of the anniversary, so could be a target window.
Agent 64 is such a clever name! I like it!
@dew12333 it isn't just rumors though when Xbox actually has achievements for the game that can be seen.
I had been assuming Xbox would get the Remaster and Switch would only get the original N64 version, but this no show makes me think they could be getting the same version if it is revealed during the next direct (hopefully that means Switch gets the Remastered version, but fear everybody will be getting the N64 version)
Goldeneye aged like a glass of milk. The gameplay doesn't hold up and everyone excited about a remaster needs to seriously find a new game to obsess about
I'm hoping that the Goldeneye drop for Switch and Xbox stills occurs when the Direct eventually hits... 🤞
@BANJO Yes, same. I think it has a high likelihood, but my only concern is that there were rumours back in Jan/Feb that failed to materialise.
High chance the game was delayed due to the war in Ukraine given the plot of Goldeneye, but the war started some 3 weeks after Nintendo's February Direct.
So why didn't it get announced in the February Direct? More pertinent a question when we now think it may get announced in a June Direct.
Maybe it was always planned for June... but then the credible sources back in Jan/Feb got wind of it very early...?
We will have to wait and see...
@steventonysmith Most people who are excited for this are aware that it has not aged well, but it is an important piece of gaming history and a lot of us have very strong memories of playing the game when we were younger, so it is exciting that it will finally be available to play again.
@Bucky
Sometimes it's better to enjoy those rose tinted memories then to go back and play these early 3D games
@nocdaes All of what you said makes me think it may not get announced in the next direct..
It seems to exist due to the abundance of information found, but as you say it could have been delayed due to the war..
Exactly, just have to wait and see at this point..
@BANJO If it is not revealed in the next direct, my countdown clock will be reset to August 25 for the 25th anniversary of the original release.
@Bucky I hadn't considered that. I would take that gladly at this point, then at least we would know it's out soon 😀
I'm really interested in this game and are going to give it a try. You know another game I absolutely loved in early 2000? "No one lives forever". First person Shooters with a stealth element. A remake or sequel of those would be great. But it seems they have become abandonware by now...
Or ION Productions just won’t let this game be released. Barbara has always hated it since it came out on the N64, they tried to stop Nintendo from selling it too.
@Ricube You might know this already, but apparently the ownership of the IP is a complete mess. Nobody is quite sure who owns it, and they can't be bothered to do the work to find out. I'd also love to be able to play the originals or get a sequel, but Nightdive Studios tried pretty hard to 'remaster' the two games about a decade ago and ended up giving up over the ownership debacle.
I want this…. As long as it reviews well at least.
just make another timesplitters game ><
This looks great, will defo give the demo a go
Looks like a great homage, definitely will check out the demo.
Can we stop with the rumours about it now lol
@Bucky I only visit this site and I knew they were saying it was going to be seen at that show, the article pretty much says that. Now we have them quoted as saying new stuff that may or may not be true.
And once you guys play it again, unless it's changed to the point it isn't the same game, you'll realize how bad it held up and quit. Unless your nostalgia is that blinding.
