If you're a fan of games like DOOM and even Duke Nukem 3D, you're definitely going to want to keep an eye on the upcoming Warhammer 40K title, Boltgun.
As you can see in the 'Skulls Showcase' reveal trailer above, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is channelling all the classic retro first-person shooters from yesteryear. This game offers up a "hardcore, sprite-based experience" in the boots of a Space Marine. Here's some PR:

It's being developed and published by Auroch Digital Studio and Focus Entertainment, under the guidance of the Warhammer creator Games Workshop. The game has apparently been "brewing" since 2018 and is currently targeting a 2023 release for Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms.

My only question is will it have good gyro aiming controls. I just can't go back to thumb sticks only now unless it's a slow paced shooter like Doom 3.
Looks stylish but doesn't look nearly as retro as I was expecting based on reading the description.

Looks awesome, although it sounds like it’s been in development hell if it was started in 2018 and isn’t out until 2023. Maybe it’s a small team given that they’re going for a retro look. I’ll definitely be watching this one.

@carrotcakehater I had it when it came out and it's an FPS on par with the difficulty of Dark Souls so strategy is definitely a necessity.
@sketchturner this made me look up which fps were in the 90s... and that list goes from "Wolfenstein 3D" to "Half-Life", "Quake" and "Unreal". The 90s had so many tech jumps it's crazy.
I might get this one, I love those 90's FPS, and this one looks like the child of Duke Nukem 3D with DOOM II.

Hm, I’m skeptical, but interested. Games Workshop tends to screw up many Warhammer video games, so I’m hoping this one is different. The game looks simple enough, and if they capitalize on that concept it should be great. For now...

@carrotcakehater I was gonna say Fire Warrior, but I looked it up and discovered that was a 2003 release. (And also a terrible one, at that!)
@Severus_Snape that makes me miss the days of 2nd edition, when Space Marines could actually equip shotguns. Or laspistols if you liked wasting points.
@Bucket I started in 2nd Edition and with the exception of models being missing due to lack of production, I found it to be the best version of 40K.
@BloodNinja I much preferred the newer plastic over the pewter models though. I remember cutting meltas away from poor marines....

@Severus_Snape Oh certainly, the models are much better in modern times, but I enjoyed the rules of 2nd ed over the more simplified game that is used today.
@BloodNinja Same. I was always frustrated by the lack of some models, but the rules were great once you learned them. So many weapons and wargear. The models are much better these days, but I miss the old rules.

well, one could still play the old rules. I'm sure there are a few PDFs out there, if you don't have the books... just a question of finding some like-minded players. And enough time. The second one seems even more daunting. Hence, videogames.

Oh yes finally an old skool first person blood fest with colours so in your face. Absolutely adore the original doom style in part surroundings. If not too expensive and physical release then I'll acquiring definitely. Hope is single joycon compatible.
