French publisher Microids has shown off gameplay footage of Pastagames' upcoming Arkanoid – Eternal Battle, which takes Taito's coin-op classic and transforms it into a cross-play online multiplayer Battle Royale.
The game is confirmed as coming to Switch – as well as PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC – this October.

+ Neo: This solo mode expands on the classic gameplay with brand-new levels, a modern and stylish art direction & sounds as well as new unique blocks, bonuses and effects!
+ Versus: Play locally with 2 to 4 players on the same screen!
+ Eternal Battle: For the very first time, 25 players can challenge each other online in an exclusive Battle Royale mode! Use your power ups to gain advantage and aim at the top score to be the last one standing and win the game!

+ 4 game modes to (re)discover the famous block breaker game, alone or with friends: Revisit the original game as if you were in the mid 80’s arcades with the retro mode, discover the modernized Neo mode and its exclusive levels, challenge your friends locally on the same screen or play against the entire world in a 25-player Battle Royale craziness with the Eternal Battle mode!
+ Brand new content: On top of the brand-new game modes, players will discover or be reintroduced to the emblematic block breaker game in a fully modernized version. This is one I'll definitely put on my wishlist. I loved Arkanoid back in the day, although I can remember my first ever experience with the genre was some cheap rip-off on PC back in the 90s.
I still have fond memories of the NES version with that absolutely perfect dial controller. A true classic! Will be on the lookout for this one ✨

I don't think I've ever played Arkanoid but it looks like Breakout?
This game is PERFECT for a modern revisiting. If done well, I have Pac-Man CE level hopes.

Yeah this looks fun, but I'm not really keen on the online/Battle Royal vibe — personally I'm more excited for Shatter Remastered

The Arkanoid games were one of the main reasons I splurged on an Egret II Mini and its paddle/trackball controller - I'm looking forward to trying later this summer.
I'm happy there is a retro mode so you can play the arcade version. I've been waiting for that to come to Arcade Archives, so at least this scratches that itch. I don't need all the other games, so I wish there was a way just to get the arcade archives version, but this appears to be the way to get it, so as long as it's not insanely expensive, I will likely pick it up.

So this was one of the titles that Taito was resurrecting in a new way. I absolutely love Arkanoid and it's the first brick breaker I ever played. I'm doubly elated that the retro version is on here too. And now I can play one of my favorite games online? Instabuy, no question.
Unless it's 'free to play' its Battle Royal mode has no chance of taking off, even with crossplay. I hope it is because I'd love to see Arkanoid make a a successful comeback.

@Teksetter How has that one been working out? I found myself longing for that little delicacy. Arkanoid is a game (and genre) that I've badly missed all these years. There is an iteration of the concept called Siesta Fiesta on the 3DS which isn't bad, but it doesn't quite strike the same chord as the original.
BTW, I never complimented you on your hilarious comment about Drainus a while back. Rock on, arcade dreamer!

I’m afraid I can’t offer any insight on the Egret as my set hasn’t delivered yet. I preordered from Strictly Limited Games in the UK, and their latest update to shoppers was that they’d start shipping soon. It was available months sooner (February? I’m not sure) if importing from Japan, but SLG put together a nice bundle and I hoped maybe it would be multilingual (in case my kids wanted to try it someday.)
Honestly I haven’t played Arkanoid since I was a kid myself in the arcade, but fond memories. I miss the genre too - I enjoyed a little Pong, Breakout, and Kaboom!, and Arkanoid was a nice powered-up descendant of those.
I never owned a 3DS and may never experience Siesta Fiesta, but thank you for the tip anyway!
The last Breakout-like I’ve played was THE Block Kuzushi long ago on the Japanese PS1. It was in D3’s SIMPLE 1500 series of generic games. I got my 1500 yen’s worth of fun out of it. 😄
It'll be interesting to see if the Egret II Mini's Paddle Controller works with this game.
