Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya has a new message for anyone considering playing Bayonetta 3 - make sure you play the first two games.
Yes, although he's said something similar already this year, he just wanted to say it "again", to make things loud and clear. If you have played through Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2, you'll naturally enjoy the story "100 times more".
Here's the Google translation:
"Somehow I wanted to say this again, but if you are thinking of playing "Bayonetta 3", I definitely want you to play "Bayonetta 1" and "Bayonetta 2" by now ... I think that person can enjoy the story 100 times more"
Speaking to IGN Japan in February, Kamiya also mentioned then how Bayonetta 3 would be a much "more interesting" experience for returning players.
Here's exactly what he had to say at the time, courtesy of a translation from VGC:
"I’d like you to play Bayonetta 3 after you’ve played the previous games. We wrote the storylines for the first and second games in a way that you could enjoy them regardless of which one you started with, and there’s no reason why you won’t be able to follow the story and enjoy it if you start with Bayonetta 3. But I’m convinced that if you’ve played Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 you’ll find it even more interesting. So I hope you’ll [play them to] prepare yourself for the third game. If you haven’t played the first and second games, I think you’ll be missing out."
Bayonetta 3 is currently still on track for a 2022 release. Do you think we'll be seeing it any time soon? Will you be taking Kamiya's advice and playing (or perhaps replaying) the first two games before even starting the third one?

Hey I'll take ANY excuse to replay Bayo
Then put them on a sale. I'd happily rebuy them on a decent discount for Switch, than replay them on my dusty Wii U with a broken Hard Drive
I mean... yeah you should play them but not for this reason. Play them because they're excellent games.
I just need a release date so I can replay both games for the 5th time and be fresh for the new story. I loved how the 2nd one made things come full circle. Can’t wait where the 3rd will lead.
Story lines with time travel! Yippee!!!
I’ve played them to death, especially the 1st game back on the Xbox 360. But now I feel like doing another play through with both games again.
I played both to death...the 1st on 360 and switch, the 2nd on switch... now give me the third PLEASE
sure thing! let me just get a physical copy of both games on switch and then ... oh wait ...
Its because you are playing as Cereza, not Bayonetta and it is easier to understand the difference if you play the other games first.
what? and get burned for breaking a sacred seal? the dude tries to teach how to appreciate what you have from the start yet now wants people to burn through anyway? my neighbors already think me as a terrorist dog - playing bayonetta will earn me the new title of the inferno witch to my resume. hurts my day business I tell you.
bayo3 will only further add fuel to the fire making its own consumer base responsible for its own destruction. it'll be along the lines of, "what you don't like what happened? you were the one who let the demons in though."
Really wish they'd put these things on sale for once. Have the games on the Wii U so don't really want to drop the $60 on them on Switch but I'd totally be willing to go a bit lower.
I played 1 and 2 out of order, but they were a hoot. Especially 2, it felt like a roller coaster
Playing Bayonetta 1 and 2 won't even help you understand their own stories. Still definitely worth it, though.
I’ve completed both games so can I now get a release date finally?
Waiting for the double pack to go on a good sale lol
I mean, he drives a hard bargain, yes sir!
@Anachronism Haha I thought the same thing. Love the games, but the plots are all over the place.
Be playing Grand Tourismo 8 before Bayo 3 methinks.
Man says "buy two of my games before buying the third"
I once started with Bayonetta 1, but never finished it, even though I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it's high time I play them sometime soon in preparation for 3.
Why, so we can make sure we understand the story? Is that even possible with a game like Bayonetta lol
I think I stopped paying attention to the story by the 2nd or 3rd cutscene of the sequel. Great game though. I've never played the original. I have it on Wii U so maybe one day.
Apparently im just a collector now. I will buy it to look good next to bayanetta 1/2 combo pack
I've had both on my Switch wish list since getting one but they're never discounted. Hook us up.
I'm good. I've played them both but honestly couldn't tell you what either of them are about. Story wasn't Bayonetta's strength. It's all about the gameplay.
Also Bayonetta 1 is pretty rough to play these days as the quick time events are absurd in that game. Bayonetta 2 is much much better in my opinion.
Finish the game! I wanted to say that again.
The Bayo games go on sale every year, I'm certain it'll happen soon.
I can't wait to hear about Bayonetta 3 next week, in gaming magazines!
I have them physically both on Wii U and Switch but never completed the first and haven't even started the second. I don't know what it is but it never seems to hold my attention.
I've loved tons of other hack and slash games (DMC, Lollipop Chainsaw, Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear Rising) but these just never seem to click with me. It makes me sad. ☹️
Personally loved the story of Bayonetta 1 & 2 and I’m pretty pumped for part 3. Can’t wait to see where they take the character.
I played the first one and enjoyed it. 2 is a game I've always been meaning to get around to. Maybe this summer is when I finally pick it up...?
I know it has been said here, but the lack of a sale price is frustrating. I've had them on my wishlist for years, but I'm not play $60 for last gen games.
@TicTacTecmoBowl Not even last gen, Bayonetta is from 2 gens ago
Someone should tell him we can't play Bayonetta 3 b/c not only is it not out it doesn't even have a release date yet.
I have been meaning to replay B2 on my Wii U b/c the first time I played it I was n a rush so played on the easiest setting, story mode maybe, there's like 9 options, and some of the boss battles finished mid dialogue conversation so I actually missed some of the story.😂
Should check my library, they have a pretty good Switch game collection, my Wii U is having issues.
Yeah I plan on it because I haven't played the second game yet and I haven't played the first since it came out for PS3 all those many years back, lol
@tabris95 You can spend a good $400 and up to get the Japanese Climax edition which is the only way to get a physical copy of the first game.
@Astro_Alex Climax Edition in Japan includes physical versions of both with English voice overs included. Check eBay out.
@__jamiie I wish Lollipop Chainsaw had a Switch port. That was so much fun on the PS3.
@TicTacTecmoBowl I had a buddy pay $500 for the Japanese Climax Edition that has physical copies of both games, lol
Put both games on a Switch cartridge and I will gladly buy them!!
Cool, we'll have plenty of time.
I'm just disappointed that its only Switch. Personally i think thats the worst platform for it. A super vast action games needs high frame rates and as an added bonus, 4k. Neither of which the Switch is capable of.
Well I already played 1 n 2. So this is bringing up more excitement for me
@JustMonika That's the one I bought at release. It's a lovely collector's set to be fair.
@JustMonika Agreed. I had it on 360 and am gutted it never even made it to backwards compatibility. I'm sure it was down to music licensing.
I believe we will be able to play the fourth before the third releases.
Re-release 1+2 combo again at regular retail price! I’d be happy to buy them.
The stories of the first to games are kind of bonkers, but they're still great games that don't take themselves too seriously. Yes, you absolutely should play Bayo 1 and 2!
*wants u to BUY 1&2 first
I think I might follow his advice, I have the first on steam but I feel behooved to purchase 1&2 on switch now a digital bundle exists
Already did, many times years ago. Bought multiple copies of both games for multiple systems. Even bought a WiiU purely for Bayo2 when it was still an exclusive. Bayo 1+2 was the first game I bought for my Switch. Enough is enough. Bring on the third game.
