There's a theory doing the rounds (because of course there is) that the online modes in Nintendo Switch Sports aren't actually the real deal.
In response to this, our senior video producer Alex Olney is here to set the record straight. As you've probably already worked out from the title above, no - the online mode isn't fake, but there does seem to be something going on.
It appears you might get matched with bots either "easing you in" or possibly making up the numbers. So, Alex has spent some time assessing the fine details to help you identify the real players from the bots.
The bottom line though is Nintendo Switch Sports does not have a "fake" online mode. View the video above for the full rundown and tell us how your own experience with this game has been so far.

"fake".
each time you do one match online, its a bot match. after that, it searches for people. first your region then other regions.
honestly. people get too dramatic.
edit: first online match per sport.
Can confirm from watching a friend play for the first time last night and reaching the same conclusion. It would be nice if Nintendo just made that clear.
Some optional tutorials would be great, too
It’s just youtubers trying to get clicks. Biggest offenders are switch force and Nintendo prime.
If it doesn't clearly state in the game when the person you're playing with is a computer player (eg, in Pacman 99 the bots are called something like Cpu1, Cpu2 etc and I think in Tetris 99 too) it's a form of fakery to me.
Definitely bots in the 1st attempt. I won bowling at a canter on my 1st online attempt and every other payer was at 50 something score. Totally different experience 2nd time round,
Well, it not strange people thought it was fake, since clearly bots are added, and the first game of a sport seems always to be against a bot and a real weak one as well sort of defeating the point, since I won my first bowling tournament with over 100 points, only to see most people online capable of throwing 5 strikes a match in the next one..
Not sure if they have to make it explicit if you're playing a bot, since it spoils the illusion, but later on the option would be nice... And when you're playing 'pro league' shouldn't they be eliminated anyway?
When playing bowling at higher levels, I am not even getting the full number of players so surely if Nintendo was using bots at league levels they would fill the gaps. Out of 16 possible players, I am often playing with maybe 12 sometimes 14 players and usually for there are a lot of strikes and spares happening throughout.
When you first start the online mode, it does explicitly specify you may be matched up against CPUs. This isn't surprising, and it certainly isn't news!
not the first time they used bots in their games for first time playing they use bots in the first few games of Spatoon 1 and Splatoon 2 probably Splatoon 3 will also use bots in it's first few online games
Seems to be filler bots written from client side. That's not 'exactly' fake. But does kind of lessen the experience. I would bet there's a minimum player need per game and then it fills.
I love Rocket League.
You know exactly who is a real player and who is a bot in the match when there are bots to complete the team. Rocket League is awesome.
@AndyC_MK111
Yeah the random capitalized words and a picture of the guy making an exaggerated face, are signs to just stay away from the guy.
@blindsquarel I'm ashamed I used to respect those two channels and watch their content.
@Itakiteacher
Yeah, I used to really like them. To be fair Nintendo prime at least has a few good videos, but switch force has just became a clickbait mess.
It's bizarre that people are judgemental of those who do say it has fake multi-player. If when you go online, it makes you play against bots.. then yeah, that's kinda fake. Sure it's only for one round, but that could've been done BEFORE online play, or as an optional tutorial. I played offline first with my buddy then we switched to online and we're forced to play against bots, once per player per sport. That's pretty freaking lame. It really doesn't prepare you for the ****ery of players getting strikes every bracket or hitting a volleyball in such a way that's literally impossible to hit. If I choose Online, I expect online. It isn't the end of the world, but it's reasonable and fairly obvious why people are calling fake
@MyNameIsJudas you can’t call the game ‘fake’ when it tells us that there is cpus..
