Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, a 'massive expansion' for the game, is creeping ever closer. Due on 30th June, it'll add a whole lot of content and also new features, one of which is Follower Quests.
Revealed in a Digital Event for the game earlier this month, these are single-player only and involve you heading into battle accompanied by story characters. These characters will pitch in and help, with each having distinct fighting styles; they'll even behave like human players and ride monsters, for example. It'll be another way for the game to do its storytelling, and in addition to follower quests with characters from the new Sunbreak hub (Elgado), there'll also be some of these with Kamura residents from the base game, such as Hinoa and Minoto.
The game's official Twitter account has now shared a peak at Follower Quests in action, showcasing how Dame Fiorayne (a key character in the expansion) helps out.
The AI looks solid, utilising various moves to weaken the monster. Replies to the video seem mixed as some don't seem to like the new feature, but as an optional set of single-player quests we think it looks like a fun idea.
Check it out and let us know what you think!

The only thing I'm not sure about is the Followers deaths not counting towards the quest death count. That almost makes me feel that the follower quests might a bit easy mode, especially if you can just revive them right there during the fight instead of them coming back from camp. Unless the fights are set to a pretty high level? I still think they sound like a fun time, just maybe not as challenging as I thought they might be?
It looks awesome. I just hope it means that the story's quality will get affected positively by this feature since it gives room for more interaction
@Highlar I think it depends... the problem we usually have with having an npc on a team in a game is that they tend to like making that one stupid decision that kills them off early and therefore needs help/medic constantly. I think it would make the game way too hard for many if they got carted as well
But I hope it means that the difficulty is higher
If this expansion is 13GB, then Capcom better release a physical complete copy of both the base game and the expansion.
@danemord True. That's why I asked about the possible difficulty of the quests, as the Follower AI does look like its pretty solid. I'm still getting the game regardless. I love Monster Hunter, and have bought Rise twice on both PC and Switch (though I'll just be getting Sunbreak on Switch at first), and its one of my favorite Monster Hunter games to date. And I think the Follower feature is a great idea; its something I've wanted for a long time.
"They're better at the game than us"
My mimic tear tells me that all the time. 😂
I always like company on my quests, NPCs, pets, familiars. It isn't safe to go alone. 😁
They should let us scan our Magnamalo amiibo so we can ride it around like a steed.👍
@Highlar Definitely. I'm very excited to try out the follower feature
That person playing kinda missed a lot lol.
@rjejr If you want to ride them go play Stories. 😝
Can they be brought on normal missions? I don't often get the chance to play online and would love to have some assistance with some of the harder monsters. I've gotten pretty good at soloing most of them but it gets tedious when you're grinding for parts if you're not doing it online. A proper partner instead of a Palico could help alleviate some of the tedium.
@Spoony_Tech I was going to play Stories 2 when my kid finished it, but they never finished it b/c they said it wasn't that good, so I scratched it off my to do list. 🤷♂️
And besides, I spent a lot of time riding monsters in MR:R, those were my favorite parts, especially near the end. And I also just remembered you could ride your dog everywhere I think. It's been a year, don't remember, but I think you can ride it most places at least. So why not Magnamalo, after you beat it of course. Which I'm guessing most people playing this will have done.
This is such an awesome feature, really can't wait for this game 😍
@russell-marlow If you mean, take the base game and expansion and load them both onto the same game card together so you don't have to download anything? I like this idea and I will support it. The thing is, if Capcom goes about doing that it means that they would likely kill the retail SKU for just the original game alone and just leave the base game/expansion SKU there for $60. I'm not sure how enthusiastic Capcom would be about doing that. Just my thought and until next time I am out!
While I don’t know how much I’ll use the feature since I mostly play online co-op, I love that they’re working to move the franchise forward with different gameplay elements.
I think the very first Sunbreak quest will naturally transition into a follower quest, where she jumps in to fight with you against the werewolf! There's so much organic storytelling that can be told throughout a regular quest with this new mechanic, especially for future games.
I hope their AI is competent in release.
@Highlar I'm going to assume it'll be like your cats/dogs, they'll either be knocked out for a while, or maybe they won't return until you faint yourself or something...
This might be the thing I most excited for in the whole release 😅
@RareAir23 I already bought a new version of the game, unopened and half the price on ebay a while back, so why would they not care?
13 GB for an expansion is a lot of storage space for something that isn't a download-only game.
