According to journalist and presenter Geoff Keighley, this year there'll be fewer third-party video game showcases.
In a Twitter Spaces audio session, Geoff explained how these publishers and developers have apparently reconsidered their approach after a somewhat negative response last year to full-blown showcase events with only a handful of announcements:
“There were a lot of shows last year where everyone was disappointed when they weren’t really press conferences, right? Like Take-Two, Capcom, Square Enix and things like that."
“I think [they] have learned that if you’re going to do a press conference, you kind of need to have 30 minutes-plus of stuff, and sometimes they only have one or two great games to show, which may not be enough to do a full event around.”
Geoff says there'll be a "bit of a shift" in response to this, where these companies instead participate in events like the Summer Game Fest and the upcoming Xbox and Bethesda showcase. He added how he has a "pretty good sense of what's coming in the next month" and expects people to be "hyped about games in general" around this period.
“There is still a lack of games coming out right now, this kind of is the Covid gap year I think… with a lot of games being delayed because they were started during the pandemic. We’re still hoping for a lot of things to come out."
Geoff's Summer Game Fest begins on 9th June and will showcase "what's next in gaming" along with some "huge" new game announcements. And while he doesn't expect everyone to necessarily get everything they want, he still expects it to be a lot of fun.

Sonic Frontiers.
Man it still sucks that e3 isn’t this year, Now I have no idea when too look forward to knees ):
Oh and to top it all off they still kept summer ad fest.
I mean, yeah. Big events catch the eye much more than just a single publisher hosting something. I don't think it's wrong for me to claim that people like a bit of spectacle to go along with the announcements. If they didn't...then they probably just watch trailers. It's why I don't tune into Nintendo Directs or State of Plays, they're essentially just a stream of trailers played one after the other(with oftentimes annoying or cringy commentary in between talking to me like I'm 6 years old). I'd much prefer to pick and choose what trailers I'd like to waste my time watching, thanks. Either go big and go loud or don't go at all and just dump trailers on social media.
E3 had its fluff and various issues but at least back when the three platforms were renting the floor, it was generally a central hub for content announcements in the year. Now everything is here, there and under where..
@NinChocolate if only there was a giant and accessible communications platform to view all gaming content and news….
Cool, so I can skip the annoying hosts that think they're clever and funny and just watch trailers that interest me afterwards like I usually do?
I actually think part of the joy of E3 was the variety of naffness of each conference: the deranged fembot presenter, the petrified developer, the unexplained Morris Dancers. If the whole lot is going to be viewed through the Keighley filter, I get the feeling it’ll be a bit of a ‘high 5-athon’.
@Mattock1987 was speaking to the more condensed timing of announcements, not the general repositing. But thank you for the snark
He would say that.
Getting a bit bored of the covid excuses now, I think developers are waiting for more PS5 to be sold.
I've been a bit disappointed with the last few Directs so I'm not expecting much of any thing from anyone 😂😭
@tourjeff Interesting, the last Nintendo Direct was imo one of the best of all time.
FE Warriors, Mario Strikers, Switch Sports, Live a Live, Mario Kart DLC, XC3 etc. I think that Direct had something for almost everyone
@mariomaster96 indeed, the last one was good but no games that I would like to get immediately.
MK DLC is attached to the subscription which I don't plan to have yet and Strikers seems fun but I'd wait for a discount in the near future.
All the rest are not of interest to me.
I guess I'm craving for some dormant IP from Nintendo, hence, the reason I don't have great expectations for the next Direct as I think they won't have any 'surprises'.
@NinChocolate sorry, I wrote that before coffee. But E3 needed to die- was an expensive and sweaty thing. I imagine most gamers just get news fro gaming sites now, and Nintendo Directs are always fun.
@Mattock1987 I get that. I don’t follow MS or PS news, so it felt like low investment to tune into the E3 stream schedule once a year (which usually streamed here on NL to boot) to get an understanding of their software. But now I’d need to follow multiple dedicated news sources over the course of time, it feels like
@tourjeff "MK DLC is attached to the subscription which I don't plan to have yet"
You can also by it seperately for 25$/€ whatever (for all 48 tracks). You don't need the subscription
If you are planning to watch Geoff's SMF expecting Nintendo news (or Sony, Square, etc), you are seriously wasting your time. The most we might see from Nintendo at this event is another peak at Mario + Rabbids 2.
So far, 2022 is shaping up to be a great year for catching up on old games.
When Geoffrey talks, i Don't listen.
@mariomaster96 really?
I didn't know that.
I'll probably get it as my daughter and I loved to play it together.
Three and a half hours of straight adrenaline rush trailers with no ad breaks (since the whole thing is ads already anyway) makes it hard to know when to go grab a snack or go to the bathroom, especially when so many trailers don't tell you what they're for until the end. I wouldn't mind a somewhat more subdued pace.
Also, last year was my first time watching, and I can already tell it suffers the same issue as most awards shows: it's not about the awards. When you have over three hours and yet still have to reveal some awards in rapid fire succession, your priorities are skewed.

@Snatcher Was E3 somehow not a summer ad fest to you?
@mariomaster96 the direct had something for everyone, but had a couple anti things for me (Nintendo switch sports, the worse looking mariokart tracks) that left me feeling more disappointed then even a direct that had no games for me
@Axecon completely agree with you. Summer games fest is boring to me because those companies including Nintendo don’t do the summer games fest thing. I know Geoff is trying to push that on us but last year’s was the worst. Didn’t have any companies I care about there. 😂. I like E3 better despite what people said about it.
@Bret Nah still had ads, but E3 felt like so much more of an event, and was more fun in my opinion at least.
