The Nintendo Switch already has an extensive library of modern and classic fighting games on it, but one title that we're yet to see show up is the My Little Pony-inspired take Them's Fightin' Herds.
That could all change very soon, according to an ESRB classification - which has rated the 2D animated fighting game for multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch.
This title was originally released in 2020 and is a spiritual successor to Fighting is Magic. The entire cast is made up of "adorable animals" who were designed by Lauren Faust - the creator of the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
The ESRB has rated this game E10+ and it contains "alcohol reference, fantasy violence, use of tobacco". Here's the summary:
"This is an action game in which players assume the role of a pony-like character battling evil forces. Players explore dungeon locations, search for an artifact, and encounter cartoony enemies (e.g., wolves, snakes, bears) to fight. Battles are presented as stylized one-on-one fights, with animal characters punching, kicking, and using special moves (e.g., lasso toss) to deplete opponents' health bar. Fights are highlighted by impact sounds, light effects, and cries of pain. Among dozens of items, players can obtain fermented grape juice and a bottle of champagne; costume items include cigarettes/pipes with wisps of smoke."

If I remember right, the designer for this game is the same one who designed Friendship is Magic.
oh hey, I could've sworn they said this wasn't coming out on other consoles until...some reason I can't remember right now (the story was complete maybe)?
regardless this is a terribly fun game so here's hoping
Really excited for this. I love MLP FIM and liked Fighting Is Magic, so it's nice to see the game that it inspired come to the Switch if this is true.
Wish Hasbro officially licensed this to be a MLP game so it can slowly become a crossover fighter like Super Smash Bros and we can one day dream that Pinkie Pie, Optimus Prime, the guy from Operation, and Red Ranger from Power Rangers will fight each other.
I love that Lauren Faust did the designs, in my book this makes it MLP canon.
I'm all in for those chain-smoking, drunkard stallions.
well it is coming everyone, ESRB ratings tend to be true.
Its only a matter of time, when it will be announced.
I wonder what PETA will think of this, cartoon animals fighting always seem to tick them off.
@somebread The developer Mane6 was recently acquired by Maximum Games, who also own the publisher Modus Games. Maximum Games is a big enough company to finally give Mane6 the resources to make the game in accordance to their vision, and port it to more platforms.
@HotGoomba If a random Target listing is to be believed, an officially licensed My Little Pony video game is coming to the Nintendo Switch in May. Of course, this one is based on the fifth generation Netflix movie, and is going to be published by Outright Games.
I have actually been wanting to play this for a long time, i'm not a pony guy but the game looks so good, and it was the same artist for friendship is magic I think, so it will look like, well a my little pony fighting game! And that is something I didn't know I needed in my life.
@Tourtus : Don't tell them about National Geographic.
I love fighting games so you know it's a Day One for me.
@Torakaka do you play them online? Because I would like to know something.
@Snatcher Not often since there are better players out there that can and will kick my ass in a match. At least I don't rage at that, I know my limits and accept them.
So, what do you need to know?
@Torakaka Well, anytime I go online, well thats the thing, I don't think I can? I try, but I get sweaty palms, heart starts racing, I just don't know what to do because I really do love fighting games, and I do want to play them online.
Gotta love that light-footed PR "pony-like creatures", as if the animal itself is trademarked!
Does this mean, if any guys like this game, we need to refer to them as "brony-like creatures"?
Holy cow (no pun intended), can't believe THIS of all waits may be over. TFH has been on my wishlist for years but I felt admittedly hesitant to invest in a fighting game on PC where even local multiplayer can be a headache (especially on my current laptop whose lower USB port count and lack of built-in Bluetooth suggests I might not even connect two gamepads at a time).
For the record, the game isn't just inspired by MLPFiM - it started out as a fanmade MLP game. Alas, they got ahead of themselves, pulled in excessive publicity like signing the product up for EVO and got predictably torpedoed by Hasbro lawyers as a result. After the devs pledged to maintain the project as an original fiction work instead (think Axiom Verge), that's where Lauren Faust chimed in and offered to help design the new characters as well as shape the lore and the story. Alas, many in the traditionally asinine brony fandom vocally turned their bums on this new game in protest that it "didn't have MY little ponies anymore".
A very playable build of the original Fighting Is Magic should still be out there in the internet, btw. Obviously not for Switch, alas - in fact, Hasbro ultimately managed to leave its most successful MLP generation without a single console game where even G3 got a couple. Imagine at least having a Yu-Gi-Oh-ish (damn, that's a lot of hyphens) digital incarnation of MLPCCG on Switch!
@Snatcher For me, I usually take a deep breath and exhale slowly, repeat that a few times. Now it can be overwhelming playing online, you just need to maintain a calm attitude, you won't win on your first match but you can learn from it to win the next. How else do professionals win tournaments?
Another method I recommend is watching videos online, veterans and armatures alike upload videos of combos. Finally, training. It is an essential for anyone playing a fighting game, especially when a new character is released or a patch for the game is added on, and of course tutorial mode is your best asset.
@nhSnork Don't forget that as of late EVO has become something of a joke. The sexual abuse, the founder and CEO resigning from admitting to doing the same thing. Sony buying EVO and finally Nintendo pulling Super Smash Brothers from EVO. Years ago just competing in EVO was a highlight, but now? It's a shadow of it's former self.
Not into the series this is based off of, but as an FGC fanatic, im excited for this. Pretty sure it runs on GGPO rollback for it's netcode, which works wonders for things like Skullgirls, SF3: Online Edition (Which we still haven't gotten any ports for), and Fightcade. Can't wait to see how this pans out on Switch.
@Torakaka Thanks mate, I will give it a shot.
I have see hundreds of videos, I love watching them, the only fighting game I used to know how to play is fighter z, I would say I still do, and I would say I used to be able to play online, I just don't know what happened.
This is kinda funny i read a article like two years ago about this game and posted it on fb and my today in history reminder thing just brought that post up this morning and i was like hmm wonder if its coming to switch… odd coincidence
Only 6 characters is pretty weak..., Animations look slick tho.
When the title of a game is a pun...I get worried.
This isn't for me but I love the art style and animation.
@GsPandem Can the switch even handle rollback code since they're always a decade behind in terms of anything with the "scary online"? I mean they just announced the Persona fighting game won't have rollback, I'd be surprised if this did.
The game does look pretty badass for a game about kids ponies though. Or are "bronys" still a thing?
@UglyCasanova The Persona 4 Arena Ultimax thing is more so the developer (ArcSystemWorks) not bothering. The Switch can handle rollback, hell, Nickelodeon All Star Brawl, Melty Blood Type Lumina, and even the Switch Online SNES emulator runs on rollback.
THE MVP IS HERE BABYYYYYY
I remember reading about how slick the fighting mechanics in this were back when it first released on Steam. When it drops on Switch I will definitely be checking it out.
Middle school Chlocean is screaming in her head right now
@GrailUK Y'know, I was gonna come here making a joke about how many great games there are with puns (Bowser's Inside Story, Max Payne, Guacamelee, Bad Fur Day, Splatoon), but I had to find a list of them and 80% of them are awful. So I see why you have reason to worry.
Bought this silly fun game on Steam a while ago.
@Chlocean There are always exceptions that prove the rule haha
I always thought this WAS legit a game based on the canon MLP franchise...just made with the worst art style possible. Definitely feels odd to know I was always half wrong about said observation.
I heard this game has a pretty good story mode. Willing to give it a shot. I want to get myself into a new fighting game.
@patbacknitro18 - The whole story is quite interesting.
The synopsis. The team made a fan game with MLP, was going to release it for free, Hasbro got all Square-Enix on it. Lead Artist of the cartoon encouraged them to continue on and made the original concepts for them free of charge.
The long version is on Youtube somewhere.
SIX CHARACTERS!!!!!! That's terrible ... let me guess, "season passes" *slaps forehead
@popey1980 @Travisemo007 it's a new IP from an indie with no clones or shared moves, are you really that shocked? both skullgirls and pocket rumble, similarly indie fighters, started with 8 characters each (one of which was a half-clone character in skullgirls' case) and added more, which them's fightin herds is also doing
what indie game have you played with a season pass at launch popey???
Anyone that have had their hands on Fighting is Magic can identify who is who in Them's Fightin' Herds. The only one that is remotely "pony" is the unicorn, and a dark one on that. There is a seventh character on the way.
I will get this if it comes in physical. One less PC game to get when I eventually get a PC.
It's kinda sad that there wasn't an epic FiM game made by WayForward. Matt Bozon has expressed he and his team were fans of FiM. It would be awesome to see how would they shape Equestria to their vision. And see which of their characters would appear as ponies. Pony Shantae, anyone?
As for the new MLP game coming to Switch, it just looks basic. I liked the movie, and can't wait for the two upcoming series. Yes, even the CalArts one for YouTube.
Bronies are still around, but they peaked a long time ago. There are some that are adamant about the fifth generation, especially after the movie's ending. All this despite the direct connection with the previous and beloved generation.
@somebread Power Rangers Battle for the Grid has 3
@popey1980 I hesitate to call the Power Rangers Licensed Game an "indie game"
@Snatcher It's mostly just reps. You gotta lose a lot and realize it isn't that bad, and practice a lot so that you can win when the opportunity is there. Most sweaty palms, shakey hands, and mashing comes from not knowing what your opponent is doing (experience) and not knowing what you're doing (practice mode).
@Zochmenos so I just gotta learn to take a lost, I’m not appoint to win the match, just keep telling that to myself should work yeah?
@Snatcher Just take every match as practice, cause even if it's ranked it's still just learning.
Lost because you didn't know your opponent had a command grab? Remember next time.
Lost because you got jumped in on 100 times? Learn how to counter it.
Lost because you kept dropping combos? Learn. Hit up training mode.
Once you start getting the fundementals down the learning begins to snowball.
@somebread "new" is Abit of a stretch. It's been on PC for a few years last I remember. Also 10-14 is pretty standard minmum for fighting games these days maybe 8, but personally 6-8 is sad. Especially 6. Just not enough variety.
@Travisemo007 I think I rather 6 different fighters then 15 fighter where half of them borrow moves from each other.
@Chlocean awful as in awful or awful as in fanspeak for "guilty of not being Guacamelee or Splatoon tier"?
@Travisemo007 The game only costs 15$ on Steam, you're only paying 15$ for 6 characters, it's fine.
Hmm. I've never watched a my little pony show before. But I kinda want this, it'd just be hilarious if this became a big deal in the competitive fighting game world. Not that I'd ever get that good at it. I'm terrible at fighting games.
But I do love when fighting games use non-humanoid characters. Those are usually really fun. Like Motaro in mortal kombat 3. And basically all of Primal Rage. Having essentially battling horses, is fun as hell. A fughtibf game based around non-humanoids is so rare, and so it's probably built completely differently. Not your usual punches and kicks, probably something else instead of that. I dunno
I'll see what the reviews say
@AnorakJimi Reviews are very positive.
@nhSnork Awful as in "Edd Edd 'n Eddy, the Mis-ED-Ventures." For PS2
(That aside, this game is getting decent reviews on Steam and had enough traction to get a Switch port soo 😁)
Initial thought: urgh what is this? So derpy. Too fast for me.
Halfway through: There's a hell of a lot of passion put into this and I like it.
Finished watching: My favs/mains are Llama and Tuff Cow :3
Seriously this game looks rad. Would never play online though, would get my hiney whooped!
@Shadowking58 that's actually pretty crazy lol. I never spend more than $20 on a fighting game usually. So 6 is not fine. It's weak. This game at best is like $8-10 max worth imo with so little characters /replay value. Still likely wouldn't buy it until it has at least 10 characters.
@Snatcher I don't notice borrowed moves enough for it to make a difference. 6 characters might as well be unfinished.
@Travisemo007 10 dollars worth? Look at the animation work, that’s worth the 20 bucks alone in my opinion, plus those six characters look totally unique.
@Snatcher nah, if the animation was shet, I wouldn't even bother lol. Would be worthless. $0. I disagree. $10 or less. Tho $8 is my not feeling I've lost anything price. As at face value that's wat it looks to me. And I love fighting games. But this just doesn't have enough there quite yet. At least to make it worth shelling more money for.
@Travisemo007 That’s fair, I just think you might be a little to harsh on the game, after all it’s a small team, and there’s a lot more that needs to be done, and more characters would make their balance work harder.
@Snatcher honestly 4 me, characters first, balancing later. It can be kinda thrilling to have some characters randomly stronger than others at least for the first playthru. IRL not everyone in a fight has the same strength. Some fighting games are too balanced imo lol. I understand the small team thing tho. I've no exp with game design, so I imagine your right. However it's just the standard I have with the genre and or what I've seen mostly.
Not saying it doesn't look great as is. Just needs a few more characters before Id consider dipping actual money into it lol. For me personally. Or at least a descent sale. To reflect its current state.
