The Switch port for Zombie Army 4: Dead War is well on track to release on April 26th, but that doesn't mean the process of bringing the game to Nintendo's console was particularly easy for developer Rebellion.
In a conversation with GamesIndustryBiz (thanks, GoNintendo!), studio head Arden Aspinall stated that the game will be the team's "most audacious port" yet, but highlighted that bringing it to Switch proved particularly challenging due to the console's limited memory:
"The first thing was just getting it running on the platform: I mean, it's a huge game, It was maxing out on everything on the PS4 and Xbox, so with our under three-and-a-half gigabytes of accessible memory, getting that thing in memory [was] a nightmare."
The team would quickly notice performance issues as a result of this:
"That's when we started realising how much trouble we were in with the performance, because we'd go in and see the framerate drop."
Since the game was in development concurrently with the PS4 and Xbox One versions, the team also needed to implement any existing updates to the Switch version while also considering those yet to come.
The team behind the port previously worked on the excellent Sniper Elite 4, so here's hoping Rebellion's work will result in a strong experience for Switch owners. Will you be picking up Zombie Army 4: Dead War on April 26th? Let us know below.

I'd like to read an in-depth article on porting any of the "Most Impressive Ports" games. Like, how did they cope with memory and CPU speed, and how architecture differences were used for optimization.
Can’t wait for my next LAN party
Just a solid series of third-person shooting, but even better when played with a friend or friends.
Casting a hex so the first person who mentions a “Switch Pro” gets struck by lightning
@ClamDown narrowly avoided that lightning
I got struck by lightning
Surprised it's even possible in all honesty, I have Zombie Army 3 on Playstation and it runs like absolute crap on the PS5
I don't get these stupid dev still complaining, if it's too hard to port it to Switch then just make an entire new game that shares the same IP or title.
Really selling their game to us here! I mean, going by the article, there’s no indication they’ve actually got it up and running in a playable fashion.
@Degenerate_Mii it does include 4GB RAM. 0.5GB is reserved for the OS, while 3.5GB is available to developers.
When your system costs $299, I wouldn't call any aspect of the design 'cheaping out'
@Zverik Alot of it has to do with controlled resolution buffering where backgrounds that are clear on other versions are blurred out. Draw distance is a huge factor, having "x" amount of data be in a higher resolution/framerate at a certain distance from the visible viewing angle. Most of the time, animations have to be recoded to alot for "less" movement so that characters models can maintain a decent framerate. That causes a need for remodeling in most cases. You'll notice a character model look "skinnier". The dev will usually maintain the "head" of a model because that's the focal point and downgrade the body. Mostly using less polys to create a similar looking model. Things that were more fleshed out in other versions are hollowed out to have less data present in the memory cache to maintain resolution and framerate.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I like that you called Rebellion " stupid devs" when they have supported your precious platform since launch. With top-tier ports, I may add.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Agreed, lazy developers wanting it to be easy. And it's hardly a new problem with the switch either.
@Degenerate_Mii I didn't knew you were a marketing and tech specialist, who could actually add that ram with no extra cost! Tell us your secret pleeeeeeeeeeeeaseeeeeeeeeeeeee.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I guess you can make an even better job than those "stupid devs", right?
I need to get Sniper Elite 4, but I'll keep a look on this game.
@MaxiPareja the switch dock is sold separately at $100 in japan. That means that the console itself cost $199 (including the joycons, which are $80). I don't think the dock is worth the extra $100, even for those docked only players. So, yeah, Nintendo did cheap out massively on hardware to make profit from day 1.
@Degenerate_Mii the switch was originally going to have the stock 3gb of ram until Capcom, of all people, persuaded Nintendo to add an extra gb.
Rebellion hasn't let me down yet, sniper elite 4 is probably the best "realistic" looking games on the switch and runs and looks beautiful on my TV, same with strange brigade. I think a lot of it has to do with strong and unique art direction and using what you have wisely and this is something I think rebellion understand quite well.
Already have my copy of ZA4 pre-ordered at GAME
Rebellion is amazing.
Sniper Elite 4 is one of THE best Switch ports I've ever played.
I'm really looking forward to this! Rebellion has supported Switch with so many great ports. With local wireless play included, I double dip with every game they release for Switch. I'll definitely buy at least 2 copies of this game day 1!
Great news can’t wait!
Ps. Please release strange brigade physically!
@Specter_of-the_OLED
As much as I'm almost inclined to disagree...I actually think making separate games is a good idea, and Rebellion is especially the right developer to handle that. They were largely responsible for big IP spin-offs on handheld consoles for quite some time, such as Star Wars Battlefront, so there's a decent portfolio behind them to support that idea.
@Edu23XWiiU @MsJubilee @Degenerate_Mii
But @Specter_of-the_OLED does have a fair point. Developers aren't striving for unique content they used to bring on all previous handheld consoles, and the Switch shouldn't be any different because of its hardware limitations - Yes, it's still within reasonable ability to port over console games, but there's the opportunity to make a game that's actually meant for the Switch hardware and give it a real identity rather than being a console for water-downed ports.
Plus, looking at Rebellion, they have quite the history for supporting handheld consoles. If there was one developer capable of making proper spin-offs of large IPs, it's Rebellion. For example, they took what was leftover from the cancelled Star Wars Battlefront 3 and transformed it into a spin-off for the PSP.
This 1 would be my love since is support ADHOC Local
@DTfeartheBEARD @SearchingS why with so many switches in the wild do we need to beg for local wireless play? I think 3DS was onto something with local download play. But I’m sure willing to wait and buy multiple copies so I can have LAN party games.
Why hasn’t this game been delayed due to the war?
I love their previous work, still return to Sniper Elite 4 and Strange Brigade, and played the previous games a lot as well. This is a definite buy-at-some-point. Hoping for a SE4 DLC sale, and currently playing a lot of Plants vs Zombies BFN, so I got my zmbie third person online co-op horde shooter.
@Zach777 If war was a real reason to delay war games, we wouldn't have had any war games ever. Many of the most popular war games are actually propaganda (if it has 'honor' or 'duty' or something like that in the title, and you play 'the good guys' invading the country of 'the bad guys', look no further). This is far less a war game than many others, it just has some roots in a fictional version of a historical conflict.
@sixrings Exactly! Local wireless play is an amazing feature that I don't hear many people mention. Eventually, I'd like to have at least 4 copies of each game that supports it 👍.
@Zach777 does the current war include zombies
@Savage_Joe sound the alarm. Nintendo is selling outdated tech for a tidy profit, and using brand power with the illusion of a premium product to get away with it. They've never done that before.
@Coalescence supposedly, they were selling the wii u as a "loss" due to the gamepad.
@sixrings
It certainly doesn’t include cartoony characters with orange and blue tanks that move in a cartoon world along a grid pattern.
@Coalescence it's really annoying when people say the switch is cheap , yeah it's cheaper than other consoles but for the underwelming outdated tech it's overpriced
Switch is starting to look really bad.
@DTfeartheBEARD it’s almost as if these companies don’t want us to buy multiple copies of their games.
This is why a Super Switch or Switch 2 is needed. Like I mention the hardware is there but when push comes to shove it's starting to show it's age. This may be a small thing but games are coming out and aren't stopping the hardware GPU push so the longer Nintendo waits the easier for NintenDoomed to question the Switch.
Show up.
Tell everyone your game was a disaster to port.
Refuse to elaborate further.
Leave.
@ModdedInkling it doesn't sit well calling them "stupid" without any good reason, specially since Rebellion has been developing actively for the Switch and bringing their games to the console, so, that's not on point.
@Degenerate_Mii Now go, put it on paper and give your amazing solution to the janitor at Nintendo, so that they can whipe their buttholes with your idea
@Edu23XWiiU
Maybe arbitrarily calling them stupid isn't fair, but it's easy to ignore and read the rest of the information. There's nothing that says making spin-offs is necessarily worse than bringing water-downed ports of console games. It's not denying that they are a good developers; it's moreso suggesting they should shift their priorities.
