Over 1 in 10 Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to a 2019 report from the CDC — which includes Type 1, caused by your own body attacking itself; Type 2, which can be prevented or delayed with lifestyle changes; and gestational diabetes, which develops in pregnant women and usually goes away after the baby is born. To put it another way: A lot of people have diabetes, but they aren't represented in the media.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) today announced that they had launched an Animal Crossing: New Horizons island to raise awareness of the condition and promote diabetes representation in general, in partnership with insulin pump company Omnipod, and three other diabetes advocacy groups.
The island includes 15 downloadable outfits that show off diabetic supply bags and insulin pumps, an obstacle maze, a bunch of diabetes-related puns to spot, and even goofy beach graffiti. The island was made in collaboration with Nicole "ACNH Fashion" Cuddihy, who is well-known in Animal Crossing custom design circles. There are even prizes to win for assembling a
Later today (February 17th), Nicole and JDRF Game2Give, a charity that helps gamers raise money to fight Type 1 diabetes, will be streaming live from the island on JDRF's Twitch account.

Absolutely fantastic. I'll definitely give this a look once I get ACNH for myself.

This is amazing! if I had animal crossing I would check it out right away!
Oh my god the headline killed me, I'll have to check out that island though, my sister has diabetes
Currently reading this while my blood sugar is low, so will check it out once my glucose tablets kick in!
My daughter was diagnosed with Type1 Diabetes just over a year ago, it’s been a tough year! This has made me smile 😊
I was diagnosed as Type 1 Diabetic just a couple months ago in my 20s and it honestly turned my life upside down. I absolutely love this and will be checking it out. There's a couple of sort of diabetes jokes I can see from the screenshots alone.
Also thank you and well done to @KateGray for doing the research and explaining the difference between the types of diabetes. I've read so many "mainstream" news articles about diabetes who don't seem to realise there's anything other than Type 2 because it's way more common. I'm sure that if any other Type 1s read this, they can relate to the frustration they get from misconceptions and Type 2s get frustrated by the stigma that gets attached to them.
My type 2 beetis is entirely my own doing through gross personal negligence and apathy. Don't be like me, kids. Love yourself enough to make healthy choices ♥️
This is amazing ❤️ Will definitely be checking this out!
I fear that I may have contracted the candy blight myself, but I haven't had a medical check up for the last 10 years. I gotta do better.
I don't actually play Animal Crossing, so I can't visit the island. But just by the island existing and creating a conversation around it, at least I'm able feel the adequate amount of shame that may push me to get that done someday.
Diagnosed type 1 about 10 years ago now. I probably won't check the island out, but its nice to see some representation. Especially nice to note the difference between type 1 and type 2, way to go @KateGray
This is so sweet it's giving me diabetes just looking at it.
Shame there is never awareness raised for things like cortical vision impairment or childhood apraxia of speech.
@Fizza You don't already own New Horizons?
@Edwirichuu Back in Summer 2021, I had to decide between it and Splatoon 2. I choose S2 (which I think was absolutely the best choice at the time) but am more than ready to get it now come March (I'd like to start in Spring season, you see).
@Fizza Funny thing, I pick a game over it too. I picked luigi's mansion 3...I regret nothing.
@Snatcher
You made the right choice my friend.
@ToniPSB @travisbrowning I'm glad I did it justice!! I can imagine it's frustrating to have to tell people that sometimes you're just born with it
