Over 1 in 10 Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to a 2019 report from the CDC — which includes Type 1, caused by your own body attacking itself; Type 2, which can be prevented or delayed with lifestyle changes; and gestational diabetes, which develops in pregnant women and usually goes away after the baby is born. To put it another way: A lot of people have diabetes, but they aren't represented in the media.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) today announced that they had launched an Animal Crossing: New Horizons island to raise awareness of the condition and promote diabetes representation in general, in partnership with insulin pump company Omnipod, and three other diabetes advocacy groups.

The island includes 15 downloadable outfits that show off diabetic supply bags and insulin pumps, an obstacle maze, a bunch of diabetes-related puns to spot, and even goofy beach graffiti. Later today (February 17th), Nicole and JDRF Game2Give, a charity that helps gamers raise money to fight Type 1 diabetes, will be streaming live from the island on JDRF's Twitch account.
