Just went to check this out but it's just over 7 minutes long, there's literally not a lot they can cram into the episode about the different regions and was honestly disappointed.
Only good thing was the art, it was more modernised to match current anime and was very good, hopefully they can create a full fledged anime using that art style
@UltimateOtaku91 Was the art really the only good thing?
@mr-duster well yeah the art, battle animation and pokemon models were all top draw. The story would of been better if the episode was longer but just throws you straight into the eternatus fight/scenario from the games
@UltimateOtaku91 I think that was the idea. To give more perspective on certain characters during particular scenes from the games, and also to add depth to the world-building.
@mr-duster there was a heartwarming moment between Leon and Charizard that I liked, but I don't really think they could have done much with this one. There just... isn't much to Leon's story arc. maybe if they had used a different character for the POV, like Hop, there would have been more to get invested in. This is really just Leon moping in a locker room. I'm more optimistic for the next one, though, I think that even with the short runtime they can tell a strong story with the Alolan characters. Lillie has one of the best stories in all of the mainline games.
@readalie I think N has a better story than Lillie. Lillie's story, in my opinion, just kind of felt like they were trying too hard to tell a story akin to black and white, and it just fell through. Of course, that might just be my bias against Sun and Moon, since those were the worst games I've ever played in the series, but eh.
I just want the main anime to be more creative and break away from Ash and friends. Its so kiddy and restrictive
Poor Leon knows he's about to lose his title to a 10 year old.
Super disappointed. There's only so much you can do in a 7 minute episode. It looks AMAZING, but if this story isn't connected - we're going to be getting a half baked, rushed part of a story arc every week. This episode was oh so bland. Pokemon company sees how many views Twilight Wings got, they know how much the fans would LOVE a full fledged anime or multiple ones having to do with different characters - original or game based. Yet they chose to do a similar bite-size style here to something that went well before in Twilight Wings. Afraid to expand the brand to their older teenage/adult audience.
Watched this on Pokemon tv. I liked it.
They have done quite a few of these mini-series with short episodes now and I'm wondering why they haven't decided to just go and make a more full Pokemon series in this style.
I know there's the existing Pokemon anime, but it really is its own thing, and I'm sure they could run more than one. lol (but maybe I'm wrong)
Given the art I hope they will finally explain Zinnia?
It was good but I hope they branch out to more unique viewpoints or side stories in future episodes. This one kind of re-hashed scenes that were already rendered pretty well in Sword and Shield.
@VoidofLight Both were my two favorite story arcs in the games, although the gameplay was better in BW I think.
@DomGC I don't think it's "crap".
@readalie It's not just Leon "moping in a locker room". It shows him being taken out of the fight against Eternatus, and Victor and Hop work to drive it back as Leon regains consciousness. It's him contemplating what had happened, with his Charizard as support. Afterwards, he goes out into the stadium as the people of Galar watch on.
Remember that this is the first episode. There's always a chance the series will pick up a bit afterwards.
I fell in love with this the moment I saw everything! The animation is so incredible it looks like it came out of Attack on Titan.
I wish the games were this detailed, Wyndon looks so realistic...
is this a commercial?
i want to buy the game to see how it ends
@w00dm4n well, Ultra Moon can still be easily purchased on the 3DS eShop so, kinda!
@Eel I have Sun,Moon and Ultra Moon. Haven't played Sun yet but they should port these with these anime cut scenes. It'd be great.
3rd episode is not as good as the Alola one but I'm glad to see Serena in the anime again (plus she looks good in that artstyle). I'm hoping she appears in Journeys soon.
Thank you for compiling them together! I'm a huge sucker for any and all Pokemon marketing promos, so these videos are like drugs.
Kalos region best region.
I must applaud them for representing the female trainers. All of these specials in the past have only focused on the male trainers and that really rubbed me in the wrong way.
Hilda getting animated for the first time is so excited!
BTW, there seems to be a trend of every other generation representing each gender trainer. Since odd generations seem to focus on female trainers does this mean that Generation I will actually focus on Leaf instead of Red? OMG. Do it. I beg of you, do it.
@Harmonie Leaf / Blue the female trainer from FRLG is in the poster for these episodes so it would be weird if she is not there. Its her Lets go design, so they are probably explaining why she wants Mewtwo or something like that.
They included a lot in this one. It felt longer.
@Harmonie since we can see Leaf, her face and her outfit, I think it’s clear she’s not the “player” in the video. It’ll probably be based on her encounter and “quest” in Let’s Go. The player character of the video could be the female one from Let’s Go though!
On that line of thought, however, I’m also happy they’re using alternate points of view. It’ll be nice to see a little bit of Lugia, in the context of Soul Silver.
Team Plasma always struck me as the one evil organization that really were overall more right than they were wrong. And I kinda gotta laugh in how they got around that in the scene where he's addressing everyone about liberating Pokemon. All the trainers' Pokemon in that scene are cute and just being little pets that are getting nothing but affection. If they had instead showed that speech with footage of trainers needlessly battling their Pokemon with other Pokemon and kicking the ***** out of each other, then in that moment he'd have seem absolutely in the right instead of much more in the wrong as they have presented it.
@duffmmann the main point of the plot in Black and White is that Ghetsis doesn’t actually care about that. In the sequels he stops pretending and goes normal villain.
@Eel I know I know, I played the games, they find a way to not make it out to be the messy issue it is, by instead changing their actual goal into something else. I get that. But, the reality is, the point they claim to have is actually a real issue that should be addressed, but nope they were genuinely evil the whole time so just forget about it.
Regardless, that doesn't make his speech he give here any less true, and if they had undercut it with Pokemon needlessly fighting each other in battles their trainers put them in, instead of Pokemon just being cute and getting lots of affection from their trainers, then it would really further hit home that the points he was making actually do have some real merit.
Getsis talking about the liberation of pokemon and the responsibility of humans against them , is the first real threat in pokemon franchise ! No more super strong ancient pokemon that threat to destroy the world but an ethical consideration for every pokemon trainer that threats to change the world for ever !
@duffmmann I suppose it would hold more weight in our universe, but the series has been careful enough to mention that the Pokémon let themselves be caught and battle out of their own desire. At least most of the time. 🤷♂️
So in that case it’s not so… Black and White. Heh.
@Eel I get it, Pokemon are different from animals. I know, I know, but all the same, as I said, it's the one evil organization in the series that really still feels like it has some genuine merit with their presented ideology. We can excuse it away all we wish with the idea that Pokemon live to battle and want to be captured from the wild, but that's putting a lot of faith in thoughts that we can't confirm since Pokemon (in general) can't directly tell us this. And I've not seen one piece of anime where a psychic Pokemon or Meowth has confirmed that it's what they all live for.
Furthermore, if Pokemon want to be captured, why do they all fight you and need to be weakened in order to be caught? Doesn't exactly feel like it's what they truly desire. And sure after they're caught they seem to want to be your Pokemon, but what if that's just the work of the technologically advanced Pokeballs editing their brain's code, to essentially brainwash them into thinking that's what they've always wanted?
I dunno, it's dumb to speculate over a silly video game series, but again, this is the one organization in the games that really has given me pause over the years and had me consider what it is they claim to be fighting for.
@duffmmann it’s mostly the games that mention these things, like how Pokémon only present themselves to trainers when they want to. I think it was Diamond and Pearl? And the whole thing about bonding and trust and etc.
And don’t worry, it can be fun to talk about these things too.
@Eel @Tobiaku I see. I hadn't seen the promo artwork. Although now I notice it is the image for this very article and there she is. LOL.
@duffmmann Ok i just want know WHY DO YOU THINK POKEBALLS BRAINWASH POKEMON!
Pokemon can still disobey their trainers. Pokemon start of with low friendship and you need to grow close to them by doing stuff like making meals for them, grooming them, and walking with them. Its not just all battles with pokemon.
Also what do ashes charzard, iris excadrill, and goh raboot all have in common? They were pokemon that obeyed their trainers than started to disobey them. Ash, iris, and goh had to do stuff inorder for there pokemon to start getting close to them agian.
Funny that they decided to give Barry's Piplup bubble, considering it no longer learns that move.
@Eel probably they are being loyal to the generation they are introduced in.
Huh, neat, I'll watch these later.
I sense some favoritism towards May's face in this series.
2 more left. Is it really gonna be the home stretch? I have not watched the series, but it looks like it's another one of the "Serious" Pokemon animes, sooo might be good idk
I enjoy these anthology series. Would love to see a mini-series follow the events of Gold/Silver properly like we got one for Red
