Ahead of GDC 2022 in March, one of the event's major highlights is already gearing up. The Independent Games Festival Awards (IGF 2022) take place at the expo, and today the nominations highlight a lot of terrific Indie games.
The biggest award is the Seumas McNally Grand Prize, and you can see the nominees below; a few of these games are available on the eShop, too.
It's also been noted that Unpacking and Inscryption are the leading candidates with four nominations each across different categories. Unpacking, from Witch Beam, has proven to be a huge hit with its blend of unwinding, nostalgia and subtle storytelling. Inscryption has taken off on PC with everyone and their gran seemingly playing it, so it also has a lot of deserving buzz.
You can see the full details on the official website.

Does this include any indie? If so then deaths door, Kena Bridge of spirits and the gunk were all far better than these nominees
@UltimateOtaku91 wasn't Kena Bridge funded by Sony and DD funded by Microsoft? That might explain it.
Inscryption is absolutely amazing. Hopefully it wins!
Best Indie Game of the Decade: The Last of Us 2.
Unpacking seems like it would stress me out. I have Unsighted on my wishlist, but I haven't actually played any of these games yet.
I often wait for sales, but from this year I enjoyed Rain on your parade and Badland
Axiom Verge 2
@UltimateOtaku91 These are actual indies, not ‘indies’ funded by multi-million dollar companies.
I second Inscryption, a surprisingly refreshing take on the deckbuilder genre with a well-crafted lore.
Been playing a lot of Loop Hero (on Steam) lately. Great audio and artstyle, but the resource grinding by late-game can feel a bit tedious. I'm enjoying it regardless.
Unsighted was probably my favorite of the year. Might have been beaten out by axiom verge 2 if I didn’t insist on buying a physical copy from limited run.
Cruelty Squad is incredibly good
Unpacking, the spiritual sequel to Moving Out?
Soooo, is Eastward not considered indie? I was bummed when it didn't hit the majority of awards shows for 2021, but to not show up in indie awards? What gives!?
Loop Hero is really good, but it takes the right personality to truly appreciate.
Agree on nomination of Inscryption but act 1 only, some will understand why not the entire game
@ChaoticIgnorance the IGF works differently from other awards
The developers have to submit their games, and they're evaluated for the year which they were submitted
Eastward was an entry in 2020. It didn't make to the Grand Prize nominees but it received a nomination for Excellence in Visual Art at least

Any best of indie 2021 list of nominees that doesn't include Death's Door is a joke. I'm sorry, but it is. Unless it wasn't included for reasons other than its quality.
@Antonis427 I'm playing through it and it's definitely great
Btw it wasn't completely snubbed though, as at least it was included as an honourable mention in one of the categories in the full list
Alrighty have Loop Hero, Unpacking and Unsighted on Switch.
Already have Inscryption from GoG.
And now Cruelty Squad goes on my Steam wishlist.
@UltimateOtaku91 The line between Indie, AA or AAA is blurring.
Is a game still strictly 'Independent' if it has massive funding from a third party?
e.g. Kena (which is a wonderful, if slightly flawed, game) had a core team of 15 employees but hundreds more were outsourced for art and animation etc. funded by Sony.
These awards seem to keep things level by taking the spirit of Independence into account.
