Mario Kart might be the one making headlines recently, but there is one other kart racer on the way. Chocobo GP launches exclusively on Switch on March 10th and while we've already seen a fair bit of footage of the game, there's still more to learn about it.
In the latest update via social media, Square Enix focuses on the karts in the game and how there'll be three different types of vehicles available. The three types will include standard model, grip model, and speed model - and each one has different stats. There also appears to be some cosmetic differences:
"@FinalFantasy There are three types of vehicles available in #ChocoboGP! There's standard, speed and grip. Each model type offers different characteristics like high speed, acceleration, handling and more. Selecting the type that works best for your racing strategy is the key to victory!"
Apart from this, Chocobo GP will include a story mode, 64-player knock-out tournaments, time attack and various other modes. There'll also be a free 'Lite' version of the game to try out, that will even allow you to participate in multiplayer if you've got a friend with the full game.
Will you be taking to the track in the month of March? Tell us down below.

Did I see Vivi and Steiner as racers in that trailer lol. That's fun.
Looks pretty cool, I’m not going to buy it tho. I have so many games I’m going to get and my backlog is literally 90% of the games I own
Game comes out March 25th
on the same day as Kirby and the forgotten land....
I want this but I can't get it day 1 though. Will get the Lite version though for now
Mysidia Rabbit - nice FFVI reference indeed
This might just be me, but this title feels like such clickbait. Three different types of vehicles makes it sound like it's going to be a Diddy Kong Racing type scenario, where each type actually functions differently, rather than each vehicle just having three sets of stats to choose from. Still interesting, but somewhat disappointed.
@alexybubble This is just how Square Enix is wording it, and there are some minor cosmetic differences in the above screenshots.
"There are three types of vehicles available in #ChocoboGP!"
Who knows though, it might be different for other characters. Guess we'll find out!

Update: I have updated the headline just to make it clear!
So... Type-R means Speed... And Type-S means gRip...?
@Eel I hear Type-R and I think of the Honda Civic Type-R
This looks so much like Mario Kart I'm going to smash a PS4 in protest.
@Purgatorium like what happened with genshin with the zelda fan smashing up a PS4 in protest?
Will Bahamut participate in race as flying creature ?
I hope Sephiroth is in the game.
I have no kart racers on Switch and I don't truly believe in Mark Kart 9, so I'll likely pick this up.
Nice you can play with a friend without both having to buy the game.
Looks fantastic, can't wait to get this.
@EarthboundBenjy Yep, and Terra from FFVI is also in. I don't think any other mainline FF heroes have been confirmed yet, but I hope they're saving some surprises. I'd love to see Celes, personally.
Both the trailer and the youtube page say the release date is March 10th, and yet this article says the 25th. Someone still has Kirby on the brain
Cute and all but I prefer my chocobros blocky since my first ride was in FF7. Wark!
My brain went towards Diddy Kong Racing and Sonic Racing Transformed for a second, but oh well.😅
It looks fun, too bad it comes out in the same month as Kirby, Triangle Strategy and Rune Factory 5 though
I'll definitely pick this up at some point, but Kirby will be my priority in March. 2022 is going to be a year of choices I think... the release slate is looking very, very strong that inevitably some titles are going to slip through the cracks.
I guess that's what the eShop Watchlist is for though! I am anticipating a long list waiting for me when the December/January sales come round again!
I don't think Square has ever had an original idea.
@NeonPizza I’m glad someone else is excited for Pocky and Rocky, it looks amazing.
I thought that by"different types of rides" they meant more than just stats. Shirma looks great with sunglasses, tho
March seems to be a great month for cute fans. Between this and Kirby I can't wait!!!
A little bit trivia about Chocobo Racing PS1 from my experience just for fun.
In Chocobo Racing, there are two type of vehicles: the ground type and the floating type.
The ground type (with wheel) are great for any track but hardly avoid the ice traps on the floor from Blizzard or Blizzara spell.
The floating type (with magic carpet / flying) are great to avoid ice traps from Blizzard / Blizzara spell but it has worse grip when you have racing at the place with high hills on the both side.
I want everyone to have the option to race with rollerblades/rollerskates like the Chocobo. That would be different for a “kart” racer.
... Wun can only hope.
@Purgatorium
That'll teach 'em
I wonder if there is any reason to ever pick anything other than speed. In most Kart Racers there really isn't.
@Liam_Doolan "Update: I have updated the headline just to make it clear!"
Can you maybe update the release date in the 2nd sentence of the article from Kirby's March 25 release date to the actual March 10 release date listed in the Game Profile box on this page and everywhere else on the internet? Or if you know something nobody else does - I know you NL peeps have you ways - then change the date in the Game Profile box for consistency? 🤷
I think it's to sloooow ...
@anoyonmus That's an error on Nintendo Life's part. It releases March 10th
@NicolausCamp ah ok
This is exactly the refresh Mario kart needed. All new content. Tbh mk was getting stale asf. Bout time. Can't wait to give this a spin. Only thing that could make it better, is if they make the story mode similar to Diddy kong racings open world exploration
I've heard rumors that the English version of the game is going to be digital only but I haven't seen that mentioned in any of the articles here on NL. Has anyone confirmed that we won't see a physical copy at major retailers?
