Super Rare Games has just announced that they will be starting up their very own in-house digital publishing label, Super Rare Originals, to sit alongside their existing physical game publishing business.
"Super Rare Games is historically best known for our line-up of physical Switch games, which we release one of roughly every 3 weeks exclusively through our online store," they said in a press release. "Our mission statement has always been about supporting talented indies of all scales, which we see this as the natural expansion of."
With several new hires, including the founder of Curve Digital, Jason Perkins, the producer at Supermassive Games, Tom King, and a new internal Quality Assurance team, Super Rare Originals will be able to offer support and aid to indie game developers.
Five game have been announced already in tandem with the launch of the publishing label:
- Grapple Dog, a 2D pixel-art platformer that relies on a grappling hook — confirmed for Steam, other platforms TBA
- Post Void, an arcade-style FPS with procedurally generated levels — coming soon to consoles, but none announced yet
- The Gecko Gods, a puzzle-adventure game where you play as a tiny lizard — confirmed for Steam, other platforms TBA
- Lone Ruin, a roguelike twin-stick shooter focused on magic — confirmed for Steam, other platforms TBA
- Completely Stretchy, a short, first-person cartoon "experience" where you explore a pastel world with floppy limbs — confirmed for Steam, other platforms TBA
This is just the start, too — "We have some more games we're intentionally keeping up our sleeve for now," Super Rare said in their press release. "You'll have to wait just a bit longer."
Super Rare Originals' mission statement is to support indies, above all else, by using their existing knowledge about the industry to champion smaller developers. "We only sign games we are genuinely, personally passionate about," reads their statement, and they're not too stressed about making every single game into a mega-hit — "even if a game were to release and break even, we'd still consider it a success to have worked on something awesome and continue to support the game and its developer long-term."
Take a look at Super Rare Originals' new website to check out their stable of indie games, and to see what all this publisher business is about, anyway.

Please tell me that super rare originals won’t make its original games limited!
I'm just worried most of these will be asset flips.
@Greatluigi - Well, the alternative is make and warehouse millions of games no one but a few thousand would buy.
Digital, however, is likely permanent.
@Magician I don’t know exactly what you’re referring to by asset flips, but I know personally that two of the games (post void and completely stretchy) are very cool, fun, and original games, not asset flips - I’d assume the rest would be the same.
I'm looking forward to The Gecko Gods, and Grapple Dog, hopefully these ones do get Switch releases. They seem like a good fit after all.
That said, what is Post Void doing here? That game was already released on Steam back in August 2020.
My guess is that they're helping with a console release of the game.
As a person who’s still waiting on their turrican games from strictly limited almost 3 years after buying them theses companies are just a worthless waste of money and you’re better off just getting the games via other permanent means
@Funneefox
Strictly Limited Games operate very differently from Super Rare Games.
SLG will make games after the pre-orders open, which can take ages (notoriously long like you say).
SRG on the other hand in most cases already have the games ready to ship within a week or month of ordering it.
These look fantastic!
You have my attention Super Rare Games
As long as I can get them to collect dust after my backlogs then I am game. These looks interesting but considering Arceus is coming out those will have to take a backseat as collection games.
@RupeeClock ah my bad. Thanks for clarifying
I wonder if this has anything to do with Brexit. I've gotten games from them in the past and been happy with the product but last year I wanted to get the desponia collection off them but the customs and delivery charges were going to increase the price above 100 euro which was far to much for me. I wonder if this has affected there sales to customers in Europe like myself.
@Tingle_The_Great Their first release in the SRG "shorts" series of physical releases, Heaven's Machine, was an asset flip. But if all of the above games are for Steam only then I don't care either way.
Great, something else they can email me about three times a week. More like Super Rare Spam.
Ooh that Gecko Gods game looks nice, both the art direction and the 3D environment. Who needs Gex right?
@noobish_hat They’ve only ever put out Switch games so it’s fair to assume these will all follow suit
@noobish_hat This isn’t a collection of games though, this is them funding each of these games as publisher while their past releases were them just distributing existing games physically. At any rate even that mixtape has a big disclaimer on the site to make sure you know it’s for PC and not Switch. If not all, at the very least one of these games will be on Switch, count on it
"Even if a game were to release and break even, we'd still consider it a success to have worked on something awesome and continue to support the game and its developer long-term." - sure, cause you still get your cut - but how would the developer feel?
