Last year saw the return of Mortal Kombat on the big screen and it seems the reboot has been successful enough to score a sequel.
According to an exclusive over on Deadline, New Line Cinema has hired Jeremy Slater to write the Mortal Kombat 2 script. He's the head writer of the upcoming Marvel/Disney+ series Moon Knight. Apart from this, nothing else is really known about the sequel just yet, but according to Slater it will be "bigger and better and bloodier":
The Mortal Kombat (2021) reboot made its debut in theatres and HBO Max last April and had a US domestic box office opening of $22.5 million, which wasn't bad at all considering mature rating and other factors in play like the pandemic.

It was bound to happen I suppose. Was an okay film but I didn't care for focusing the story on a nobody and having the actual known characters pop in and out around him.
It was fairly rubbish. I expected it to be a bit better than it was. The focus on a random made-up character just felt downright pointless.
Didn't see the first one, got to get on that, then again, never been the biggest MK fan, let alone played any of there games.
Why??? It wasn't good at all.
I still haven't watched the reboot!
Opening scene was great. Rest of the movie was down hill from there imo but I’ll watch the sequel. Felt it was too short also.
first one was bad but i still watched it. this one will also be bad but i'll still watch it.
Just to be clear... the 90's Mortal Kombat movie was a trashy cheesy mess, but the cinematography was on point. Annihilation had no redeeming qualities.
The reboot was just "okay". Not interesting enough to be good, and not cheesy enough to be funny like a cult classic. Very "meh" but watchable
Ow great the last one was rubbish
I was hoping they will reboot it again it needs it that is how bad it was
Well it can't be as bad as Mortal Kombat Annihilation, can it?
Everyone in this comment section seems to hate this movie yet audiences polled by cinemaScore gave it an average B+ on an A+ to F scale and 5000+ people gave it an 86% on rotten Tomatoes.
Did the internet lie to me? (Though RT did say that the movie is good if you turn your brain off so...)
I did like the new MK movie reboot, it just feels weird to me that everybody on the comment sections seems kinda hate it, am i shallow? LOL
I think it's one of great video game adaptation for a live-action movie that I know of... though i haven't watched the racoon city movie
@AstraeaV It made a ton of money on PVOD
This reboot was a missed opportunity. Terrible main character, all of the interesting plot developments literally happen off-screen, and the actiony bits are terrible after the (surprisingly compelling) flashback that opened the film.
Hopefully the sequel is better. Minimize Cole's role in the film, pick someone with some level of screen presence to play Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby's portrayal in the 95 film was a lot of fun; pity he's too old now), and lean more heavily into the campy ultraviolence the series is known for.
I liked the first movie for what it was, I'm down for a sequel.
Maybe they’ll get to the actual tournament in the sequel
Movie was... Alright. Would've probably benefited a lot from shaving about a half hour off of it and the villains could've been much more interesting, Cole was a rather useless addition, but it did a decent job of feeling like a Mortal Kombat movie. Could easily see a sequel either being much better or much worse depending on whether they lean more into the first one's strengths or its weaknesses.
It had its moments, we didn’t need the dull original character, Cole, and we needed more fatalities.
It was a mistake to kill the only 3 characters (Sub-Zero, Kano, and Kung Lao) that were fun to watch from the first film. So who are they gonna replace those with? I know younger Sub-Zero may replace older Sub-Zero and Baraka may likely replace Kano cause they both blade wielding characters but who'll replace Kung Lao? There's no other character that wear razor sharp hat which could be thrown.
Considering the circumstances the movie wasn’t actually that bad. It actually matches the last game regarding the story quality.
As with any other entertainment form, you want better show it and support it.
It was...okay...-ish (I enjoyed the original 1995 film more, but I also grew up during that time, so maybe it's merely rose-tinted nostalgia?). Wouldn't mind watching the new sequel on a lazy weekend afternoon.
I thought it was enjoyable but not without flaws. The final third felt really rushed. Nothing compared to the original movie though.
Yes did enjoy this tho will never beat the original move for a cheesy Goro!
Yes!!! Really enjoyed the first one, absolutely buzzing
I'm a little surprised. Despite being moderately well received I heard it still bombed. It's going to be interesting how they explain dead characters coming back. I hope they do a better casting job this time. Some of them like mileena, Shang tsung and Rayden felt really off.
@Truegamer79 it didnt really bomb because it still made money from the theatres (which they werent even going to release to) .. but apaprently has done very well on streaming which from i understand counts just as much
Guys, yes the movie sucked, but hear me out:
It also ruled.
Worse than MK : Annihilation IMHO ...
Movie was okay, definitely not awful.
I saw it! The first 5-15 minutes of the reboot were terrific, the remaining 95 minutes were mediocre. Not terrible but not good. I think it's way better then the original movies.
Like many of the comments above, I found the main character to be the worst character in the film.
Not coming back. First movie was bad. Not Annihilation Bad, but really couldn't contend with the only Paul W.S. Anderson movie to ever do a good video game adaptation. I had high hopes, they were dashed the minute the opening fight sequence ended and we were stuck with not Liu Kang in his literal plot armor.
@Tasuki Let's not jinx it. I hope not.
I'm looking forward to this, as long as they bring the main characters to the fore, and bring in characters that needed to be in the latest film. Would love to see Night Wolf, Sindel, Jade and Erron Black. Also can we get Kung Lao and Kabal back? Can't wait to see what they do with Noob Saibot.
@Desrever
The visual appeal of the original one is great.
Best and only good scene was Scorpion taking names in the opening. We need more of that in the sequel. Oh and an actual Mortal Kombat Tournament..:
I just don’t understand how they went from the og Trevor Goddard as Kano in the 90’s movie to that idiot they casted in this one. Kano being one of my fav MK characters I was quite disappointed, especially with the lack of metal plate in his face 😂
And yes I know Goddard is deceased RIP my dude, but they still could’ve done a lot better imo
The sequel with the horrid OC? Pass
@chiefeagle02 The old film is just better all around. Much hotter Sonya too.
@Draxa pity you didn’t enjoy this Kano I thought he was one of the better parts of the movie.
Agree with others the original still has a weird place in my heart. New one was ok not awful but very forgettable. Was good to have the gore represented at least.
Considering they never actually had the Mortal Kombat Tournament in the movie called Mortal Kombat a sequel probably should have that.
I actually liked the movie. So yeah hope to see more!
The first movie felt like a prequel to the actual tournament.
I also loved how subzero and scorpion where introduced. Subzero really fits in a horror movie lol.
Ripping those armsnof jacks.
I thought the animated "Scorpion's Revenge" was better, but I did like MK 2021 and I'm happy they're moving forward with at least one more film. Hopefully the guy who directed the first movie is attached to this one because he's a guy who gets MK. I'm not thrilled with ALL of the liberties they took with MK 2021 (ie. no tournament, unknown main character). Hoping the sequel's screenwriter gets us into the tournament storyline with a focus on the characters we already know and love.
