Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is one of those wildly underrated Nintendo games that tends to go forgotten — perhaps because its announcement at E3 in 2014 was overshadowed by Splatoon, Smash Bros., Xenoblade Chronicles X, Bayonetta 2, and what would eventually become Breath of the Wild, but perhaps because its mini-platforming levels seemed a little simple for a full-price release... or because almost no one had a Wii U to play it on in the first place.
Whatever the reason people missed out on it, that can now be remedied: It's available for free, for those of you with a Nintendo Switch Online membership (in North America)! From the 13th to the 20th of January, you can download the game for free to give it a try, and if you decide to buy it, it will also be 30% off from today until the 16th of January.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a charming, toybox-like puzzley platformer that stars Captain Toad as he attempts to waddle around intricate levels without the ability to jump, similar to how his levels worked in Super Mario 3D World.
We gave Captain Toad an 8/10 on both Wii U and Switch, and here's what we had to say about the Switch version, which added co-op and new levels, while also removing four levels for no real reason:
"Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a hidden gem from the Wii U era that's been given a new lease of life on the Nintendo Switch, and rightly so [...] this is a wonderful and gorgeous puzzler fit for all ages, and one which you should definitely experience if you're yet to."
Check it out with the kids, or keep it all to yourself — just don't miss out on this free trial. It's a good one!

I've already got this on Wii U but I'd love to try it with portability, even if only for a week.
I’ve always wanted to play this, but it’s never been high on my priority list. Super excited about this!
Oh nice I'll give this a try later today.
I just wish that these trials weren't so few and far between.
One of the best games on the Switch
I would love if they did more first party's for there trials, but I kinda understand why.
I JUST bought it 4 days ago….. so upset rn hahahaha. Good game though.
Easy to pick up and play for a few minutes or an hour. Love it.... even better at sale price.
oh nice! I'll have to try it out
Own it on Wii U but want to buy it again for the co op mode. I remember really liking it back then but unsure if the co op aspect really works. This seems the perfect opportunity to check that.
Double-dipped on this when it came out on Switch. Great concept, wonderful execution. Despite the switch port not having access to a Wii U gamepad, the controls work just fine.
Here's a crazy idea. Instead of a free trial how about you make it a free game with Switch Online?
Oh wait the game isn't 25 years old so Nintendo can't afford. Silly me.
I hope this goes in europe as well
Same as others, I've always wanted to play it but never have. Well I did play a demo of it, I think on Wii U. I hope this comes to Europe. A week should be enough to play through most of it.
@Blackrosewaifu9000 Same .
This is one of my favourite games on the Switch system, such an underrated game. Get it trialled folks and you can thank me later.
I played the entire game on WiiU and have also been playing co-op on Switch... there are some additional levels on the Switch version, but haven't gotten to them yet.
It's definitely worth a play-through... especially when it was $20.
Loved it on WiiU, thought it was terrible on 3DS. I'm not sure if a Switch transfer would work for me, but I'd love to play the Mario Odyssey levels.
This is a great free trial. One could very easily beat the game in its entirety before the trial period is over.
@gloom I literally did the same thing. Oh well, not like it's that expensive even at market price.
I hope this means we'll be getting more freebies in the future
There is a demo available (one of the first games I played), but yes it's awesome. Even the labo 3d mode is kind of cool!
And much more content than appears at first glance. Big recommend.
I've nearly 100%ed this game already on the Switch version, including all of the Labo content. Literally the only level I have left to beat is Mummy-Me Maze Forever.
Yeah... I don't see the point of issuing a full game trial when there is a demo available. All this will serve to do is put off people from buying the full game because they will have ample time to complete it. It's hardly the longest of games, and I doubt that people will be inclined to buy the game after trialing it just to play the smattering of post-game stages.
Games that are best experienced in short bursts over a long period of time such as Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Story of Seasons etc. are probably the best games to issue as trials, as players can only scratch the surface within the trial period while giving them enough time to invest in it and then decide whether they wish to take it further.
@HungryHungryHomer : What are you talking about? Nintendo won't even give away 35+ year old games for permanent use to their subscribers. They still expect you to merely rent them.
But if Nintendo did offer these sorts of games (being the trial games) as a bonus download to subscribers, then hell yes I would consider subscribing, even though I already own the physical release of the game.
@ModdedInkling : Ugh. That level. Couldn't complete it on Wii U. Couldn't complete it on Switch (yet) either... though playing that stage in multiplayer will likely help a great deal.
Amazed at how many of you haven't played this! Especially given the slower release schedule over the last 2 years. I guess you were all playing AC throughout 2020 and 2021?!
If I was a Nintendo investor, I'd be questioning Nintendo's catalogue management. What is the point of having titles like this just sat there doing so few units whilst an audience clearly is interested for the right price? They should have released a discounted line years ago - Yoshi, Mario Odyssey, Tennis Aces, Star Allies, Splatoon 2, Mario Golf, New Super Mario Bros U, Tropical Freeze... even BotW. These should all be at £20 or £30 respectively. Nintendo leaving money on the table.
The thought of how many people have a Switch and are just playing Minecraft and Fortnite because they can't put £50 or £60 down on Odyssey/BotW breaks my heart !!
I’ll definitely play this for a few days.
Feels like the kind of game where you don’t need to beat it get satisfaction out of it.
The game (with DLC) finally went on sale recently (may still be?) for $30 digital. I finally picked it up. It’s good fun
30% off a Wii U port ? How generous of Nintendo
Already finished this on the WiiU, but I might download it to try the new levels
@Would_you_kindly Most PS5 titles are crossgen. Same with XBOX One. If it’s a problem, then it’s an industry problem, not a specific platform holder.
@TheRedComet With the exception of the endgame challenge modes, the rest can be completed in a few days.
@Silly_G The point I see is NSO is a horrible rip off (between disconnects and lack of...well any normal features one expects from an online service) and this is their typical behind the times by 10 years way of trying to compete with gamepass and whatever playstation has.
Guess I'll give this a go since it will be the last trial (since they are so few and far between) most likely before my NSO expires and like hell I'm paying for it again.
Got this for $3 digitally thanks to that Walmart error one time. Love this game
Anything for the rest of the world?
Heavily underrated game. Expansive 3D puzzle-platformers are few and far between, and this game is packed with fun collectibles, so it’s a fun game. Region-locking demos is just a bad idea though, as you want to give everyone a chance to try out the game. I know I’m always upset when people from other countries get better deals, so I would imagine that people from other countries are upset when North America gets better deals.
@UglyCasanova : I still have an unclaimed 12 month pass from my physical copy of Tetris 99, and I have virtually zero desire to redeem it any time soon. I may eventually sell it if I don't end up using it later in the Switch's life.
Paying AU$30 annually just so that I can occasionally trade a few Pokémon, participate in the Wario Cup, play Tetris 99 every once in a while, and maybe visit a few islands in Animal Crossing is an absolute rip-off however one tries to spin it.
And I harbour little to no nostalgia for NES/SNES games for that to be of any value to me, though including N64 games with the default subscription would have gone a long way in coaxing me to subscribe. Including a Pokémon HOME subscription as well would have also helped, rather than charging AU$25 annually! Even including online battling/trading at no extra cost for all Pokémon games on Switch for those who do not have an NSO subscription would have made it far more appealing, but $25 per annum to merely store a few megabytes of data (if that!) is absolutely ludicrous.
I wouldn't mind coughing up the goods for a family subscription if there were seven other people willing to split the bill, but it sounds a little too messy in practice as I'll inevitably have to chase everyone up to honour their end of the bargain.
I'm really enjoying the N64 expansion for NSO, but it's pretty lame how we keep getting these region-exclusive, one-week free trials for old games I've already owned for three years now while PlayStation and Xbox just let you keep them. It's definitely nice for the people who haven't already bought it, but some of these NSO promotions like free Spirit Points in Smash Ultimate and the RIGHT TO PURCHASE classic controllers just feel like a slap in the face, and I would be less offended to just not have them at all.
Great game, if you haven’t played it try it.
@Silly_G
That's an excellent suggestion! I'll be sure to try it out.
@faint most 59.99 PS4 games are 19.99 after a few months. Old, last gen games are usually priced accordingly. PS4 games can often be played on PS5 without repurchase. Only Nintendo adds "HD" to the box and charges 59.99 again.
Love it on the Wii u. Bought again for the 3ds and then switch for the DLC. Great title to own. Wish we get a sequel.
Nice timely trial of a - checks calendar - 3 1/2 year old port. 😂
Will go look into the Labo VR levels - I actually enjoyed my very brief time w/ Labo VR - and co-op to play w/ my wife, though we are kind of busy w/ football and company all weekend. Oh well.🤷
This demo is not free.
It's a great game, I'll pass as I already own it on the Switch, but it's definitely worth checking out, if you haven't played through it already.
@Silly_G @ModdedInkling That level will be the death of me as it remains uncompleted on my Wii U and Switch as well. Adding some more levels would get me to fire it up again and maybe finish the job.
Great game, I just bought it during the New Year sales.
Great game, but too short. Finished it in 8 hours only and I wasn't even rushing.
The levels showcased in the SM3DW game are fun and all. But for a $60 game you can partly play in 3D World is not really worth it for me. Why are games so high in price now? Why can't free be free permanently?
Downloaded but odd it won’t let me access it til tomorrow. I had planned on tackling LoZ Breath of the Wild on my wait for the new Pokémon…. but this shall hold me over instead!
Yay, another game I'm not going to be able to play because I don't have time.
This works with the base online right. Would be nice to test it awhile before I buy. Now i bet I could beat this in a week but I doubt they will let you play the main game. ( never done any free trials so many I am wrong.)
I had a blast completing this game a couple years ago, including the DLC. Stoked to see more people are interested in playing this. Y'all are in for a good time, I promise!
@d-slice Same here. Lovely game. Completed it on Wii U.
I want a sequel.
Any word on Europe?
@gloom I know you’re partially joking, but don’t be upset, this is a masterpiece. Money well spent. Plus if you’re anything like me you wouldn’t finish it before the trial runs out. (Shoot I’ve had it pretty much since the Switch version released, but haven’t quite gotten through it all. Buuuut, I’m also savoring it and playing it slowly, 100%-ing a couple levels here and there, taking long breaks to play other games… honestly glad I still have more new levels to play.)
@Ventilator I know it might not quite be worth it for you, but if you’ve only played the Wii U version, the Switch version’s new levels combined with the paid DLC is almost like a mini sequel. 22 Never-before-played-by-you stages! Enjoy!
@BlubberWhale Yeah. 22 new levels isn't that bad, but not worth full price if you already own the original.
@Ventilator That’s true. I can’t say for sure what I would do, as I never had a Wii U when it was current (have one now… kinda… a sad beat up one with a broken gamepad), but I love the game so much it would be tempting to double dip for the DLC. Well… realistically I would probably wait until I could find it second hand for maybe 20-25 USD. Was it 40 or 50 brand new? I forgot…
Although I would also want to support it, so I might just buy it from a store to show that people like the game… Yep, I’m that much of a Captain Toad fan, and certainly don’t expect everyone to be… although I do expect everyone to give it a chance lol
@BlubberWhale Yeah. It were one of my top Nintendo games the last decade.
A countrywide store chain here (Obs!) have recently sold 3 physical Switch games for 40 bucks, 2 times last 3 months.
Titles included Captain Toad, Yoshi's Wooly World and 5-10 other titles to choose from. The problem is that they are always sold out before i get there. Hopefully they will have the same deal again.
On Wii U i only paid 30 bucks for it on release day.
Switch version costs 55 bucks here i think. Nintendo and their overpricing of old Wii U games.
I used Toad as my channel Avatar on YouTube gaming channel for years. Toad, Ice Climbers and Waluigi is my top 3 Nintendo characters. Ice Climbers is most special to me.
The only Wii U game i bought again on Switch is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Switch version is sadly missing Wii U DLC like Mercedes Kart among other things, and is also missing YouTube TV replay.
Bought it a second time for several reasons.
@Ventilator Oh wow, sounds, I don’t blame you for bit double dipping at prices like that, but maybe like you said, you’ll snag a great deal sometime.
Hey that sad about your MK8 HDD. I hope it had a good life… RIP. Hmm.. I wonder what my tip Nintendo characters even are… 🤔
Also I agree, that resolution bump on several of the Wii U ports is great selling point. Probably helped push me to get some of them… Captain Toad included. (Though like Pikmin, probably would have got it anyway. Sad about Pikmin haha.)
@BlubberWhale Yeah. A great deal i can't get...yet. lol
The HDD worked fine for years, but forgot to ever turn it off.
After 4-5 years whiles powered 24/7/365 it died.
I were dumb enough to move some saves to HDD from internal flash. Also. I forgot to sector copy whole Wii U HDD on PC to keep 1:1 backup.
Not all resolution jumps is great from Wii U.
Pikmin 3 at 720p looks a lot better on Wii U than 1080p on Switch.
This because AMD back then didn't have 1:1 same color palette style as NVIDIA.
Converting AMD colors to NVIDIA didn't work well as shown on Switch. If Switch port were proper, they would have changed all colors to fit Wii U version on Switch.
This is why Switch version is more colorful.
Anyways. Long live Toad..The pessimistic Nintendo character. lol
@Moistnado I’m assuming I don’t have to tell you that the WiiU used disks and the Switch uses carts. Anyway, most games on the Switch (including cross gen) drop in price of get a deep discount. (I picked up Fire Emblem and Astral Chain for 30 a piece last month) Your Mario’s and your Zeldas rarely do, but everything else does.
