The other Sonic announcement at this year's Game Awards show was Sonic Frontiers. Yes, Sega has made the next big entry in the long-running Sonic the Hedgehog video game series official.
It's likely to be the biggest Sonic game fans have ever seen - with "open-zone" freedom, powerful enemies, and a vast array of landscapes to speed around in. It's being developed by the experienced members at Sonic Team Japan, with a story penned by Ian Flynn - head writer of IDW's current Sonic the Hedgehog comic (via Game Informer).
Developed by the experienced members of SEGA’s Sonic Team Japan, led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto, Sonic Frontiers will bring Sonic fans an all-new type of Sonic experience. In the dangerous and vast world of Sonic Frontiers, anything is possible, and players will have the freedom to explore the visually stunning, open-zone realm.
“Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike,” said Takashi Iizuka, Creative Officer at Sonic Team USA. “With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. There’s sure to be lots of twists and turns around every corner in ‘Sonic Frontiers,’ and we’re excited to unveil more information about the game over the coming months.”
Worlds will collide in Sonic the Hedgehog’s newest adventure. An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high velocity open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands - landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more! Planned for Holiday 2022.

Serious Breath of the Wild vibes from that open world shown. Another Sonic game to look forward to!
Open world Sonic could actually have some potential if done right, don't screw this up SEGA!
May people finally realize that the problem with the Sonic franchise is not that it never changes, the real problem is that it changes too much, they need gimmicks in every single new Sonic game, they don't play it safe, they don't want to just improve over what worked in the previous games.
I want this game to be good, but they can't even make corridor stages properly, and they are trying an open-world map.
SEGA, don't make this another Sonic Forces, make this an actually good game.
what am I saying, they're gonna screw it up in some way.
It looks promising. But this is sonic team we're talking about so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
Sonic fans are getting a lot of content tonight.
Can't wait! This game seems like it'll be really good. Can't be worse then Forces!
(Also, I wonder how it runs on Switch?)
actually looks good
Whoa, big-budget Sonic! I haven’t played any of his games since the original on my Genesis, but I’ll be interested to see how Frontiers shapes up.
This has 50/50 chance of being the first excellent Sonic game in decades. 99% chance of being mediocre.
I want to like Sonic games without have to running on high speed all the time. I still freaked out with high speed in reality life, even by 30 - 40 kph of motorcycle as passenger.
Immediate purchase
This has great potential to not run well on Switch!
It does had that wow factor with the open world tease there but once I actually see gameplay that's when I made my judgment. Again this will be another game where the Switch version would likely get the lazy treatment. I could already see Sonic Team begging Sega to get away from that platform. Remember Sega Saber Interactive and Panic Button exist for a reason, don't screw this up and don't give this to Blind Squirrel either.
Yes, even if this game manages to be good, expect the Switch version to be a terrible port.
Looks like Xenoblade Sonicles.
But I'll reserve hype until they show gameplay.
One day Sega will realize that it would be a good too idea to outsource production to a talented developer that has actual experience in making a proper 3D adventure Sonic game.
This is so unoriginal
@Vexx234 Those numbers don't add up.
Oh boy more vagueness and zero gameplay beyond Video Game Trailer Environment Panning Shots ™ , don’t worry though I’m sure a dev that has no idea how to make 3D platforming controls work and automates movement heavily as you run down empty corridors is going to nail a open world game
You have my attention Sega. Now don't screw it up please
@Bolt_Strike I'm rooting for it to actually be good for once. On the off chance it's just another middle of the road Sonic game, well it will be quickly forgotten. Just hoping it won't be 06 levels of bad.
@Nameless_Shame
If they did Iizuka would make comments calling it niche and then if it sold and reviewied well they’d pretend it never happened while putting out Sonic Adventure Origins collection instead.
Are there Koroks in it?
Looks pretty solid actually, from the little we've seen.
@Vexx234 Oohhhkkkay, but I'm just saying that it can't have both a 50/50 chance of being excellent and a 99% chance of being mediocre. It can't be both excellent and mediocre.
I doubt the Switch version will look like this, but it seems interesting?
More interesting than Forces but less exciting than a sequel to Sonic Mania.
@rushiosan If you can find hidden Chao under rocks people would flip.
CONGRATS TO METROID
Sonic needs this W badly, I'm hoping for the best for the speedster....
It's sad when you have to wish so hard for a game to not actually suck...again. If this fails, well atleast we will have Sonic Mania 2.
Seriously though 3d Sonic has it rough.
Sonic 06 Do over?
This is utterly baffling. I can’t tell if I like the look of it or not.
I definitely didn't expect Sonic X SotC but I'm intrigued. It is Sonic Team though...
Sonic has been on an downward spiral for so long that all that's left is hope.
Looks interesting. Definitely won't buy it on switch. Will keep an eye on it at least.
I'm still going to hold my breath, I still need to see some game play.
But my god does it look sooo good, As long as I can move stupid fast I will be happy!
@Vexx234 Mania was actually fantastic and that came out recently.
Promising in theory, but it looks lifeless. The problem with Sonic was never that it didn't look enough like Just Cause or Crysis or any other game focused on delivering cutting-edge "realistic" graphics.
Why do the fans understand how to handle Sonic better than Sega? Too many cooks in the kitchen. Same reason video game movies are so horrible in general.
@DavidMac True, I meant to say the first 3d modern title. I didn't forget Mania but 3d Sonic needs a mania. By that, a 3d title that will actually receive the same praise a nostalgia title received.
Hot Take here, but as much as I liked Mania, I rather not want an over-reliance on nostalgia as the future of Sonic games. Mania was fun for memories, but I want this game to succeed, so Sega can finally find a formula that works and stick to it.
I took an ancient history course once, and once upon a time SEGA showed they could make a good Sonic game. They just lost their way for a little while.
I believe.
Looks like the supposed early playtest rumors were spot-on for this.
Unfortunately, the rumors also suggested the game was not very good based on those early playtests. Hopefully that is not actually the case.
As someone who takes a range of holidays thoughout the year, Summer, easter, Christmas, Chinese new year, can someone tell me when "Holliday" is.
Pokemon, Kirby, and now Sonic on big open maps? Maybe they will meet each other.
It looks like someone fooled about for ten minutes using standard generic templates in unreal engine.
Looks like it'll either be a good Breath of the Wild Clone or a horrible Breath of the Wild Clone.
Looks pretty empty right now for a Sonic game, even for a BotW clone game…
Literally Breath of the Sonic. I like it!
@Moistnado Holiday 2022 to a gaming calendar means the end of 2022. Holiday usually means around Thanksgiving or Christmas.
@marandahir Yeap and coming in around holiday 2022 means it'll go one-on-one with the real Breath of the Wild 2.
Bigger question: Can I play as Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Shadow at least?
I'm kind of tired of playing as Sonic only. I would have loved to see Tails and Amy doing the parkour stuff from Lost World.
@HammerGalladeBro
Same dawg. Silver The Hedgehog is my favorite character in the series because of his quirky personality and unique PSI abilities but I'm still waiting on when they'll let me use his abilities to run around and lift/throw stuff at enemies again.
@SalvorHardin
I’ve legit been replaying Sonic Adventure DX on Gamecube (the first time since 2003) the past few days and while it’s definitely not great, it’s surprisingly more fun than I remember it being.
However, seeing it coupled with upscaling along with SA2B and Sonic ‘06 as some sort of garbage Origins Trilogy is exactly the kind of next level thinking I would give credit to Sonic Team.
Game looks interesting. I hope it turns out well. I probably am going to get it on xbox since it will look and run better, but I’m glad it is coming to switch
Off topic, but did Nintendo just go the entire game awards without any new announcements? Kinda lame.
This feels like a modern Sonic Adventure and seems like they have some ambitious direction with this one. Could be the SA3 that they envision. Wonder if there will be some urban elements. But the character Tikal might fit with this latest game in the series.
The problem with sonic is his speed, it’s much harder to make long interesting levels with sonic when he’s moving fast, but you can’t take that away from him and tbh I don’t think and open world is gonna help here
I’ll consider it after it’s been out for six months and half the bugs are fixed.
@GamingBread Probably like rubbish due to poor optimization and the graphical intensity of this game (Also, I know it's off topic, but Ian Flynn is writing the story of this game, it has been confirmed).
Shame it wasn't a gameplay trailer but theres enough in the cg and the description to say I like the direction this is going in. I hope it turns out well. Even if it doesn't I'll buy it anyway cos I'm a sucker for Sonic but we're due an actually good original 3d Sonic game. I'm still kinda more hyped for Origins though if I'm honest! And Mania 2 pleeeeeease Sega.
It probably will look like a blur once it's downgraded for the switch! Mmm muddy low res textures.
Sonic Breath of the Hog it is then...
@Johnnel The Game Awards isn't actually worth their time announcing any big games since not many of their audience would care to watch that show. If they were to announce something big it'll be on their own Nintendo Direct or at E3 where they'll get the most attentions.
I really wish they showed a snippet of actual gameplay.
It's cool that Sonic Frontiers looks to have a Breath of the Wild-like open world, but this isn't going to play anything like Breath of the Wild.
sonic games are usually rushed but i think he might be compatible with open world, always thought sonic games are rather inefficient to make since they do a lot of level decorating that won't be on screen for long, i hear they usually put grind walls to make people replay the levels but open world games already burn a lot of time making player go from point a to b
@UglyCasanova All that would tell you is that Sega is lazy cause if it look worst than Breath of the Wild which is just a last gen Wii U port then that's not a good sign. The game needs to look better than Breath of the Wild since it's using all of the Switch powers. Remember Breath of the Wild was a Wii U port for the Switch, it didn't use all of the Switch's powers. There's no reasons for Sonic Frontiers to look worst than BotW on Switch.
@Specter_of-the_OLED there's not alot power disparity between wii U, they are both 7 gen power level machines, also this game is going to bad, why are people deceiving themselves.
@Sunsy they've been working on it since 2017. Giving BotW vibes can't be a coincidence.
@Specter_of-the_OLED you must not have watched previous game awards then. Nintendo always has something to announce. The past few years they announced smash dlc characters. They announced bayo 3 and the game awards was the event where the first gameplay of Breath of the Wild was shown. Nintendo always has something for the game awards
Oh my... incredible, but who will be in charge of the Switch version?
Well, we know for sure that:
-Haters won't like it either
-Switch version will be, as usual, 30 fps.
I hope the game is good, though.
Legend of Sonic, speedster of the wild
@NintendoArchive Switch is far more capable than Wii U. The ancient PowerPC architecture really held Wii U back.
Meh, give me gameplay over fancy cinematic trailers.
@victordamazio My thoughts exactly 🤔
Well, I was looking forward to an open world with artisitc design like Green Hills. This looks more like an NLife article with the headline 'What if Green Hil Zone was made with Unreal engine.'
Really. Is this what modern gaming has come down to? Boring.
Wasn’t there a fan made video a few years back which looked exactly like how this trailer starts?
@Vexx234 So the likelihood that it is both excellent and mediocre is 49.5% then.
@EVIL-C Tegra x1 has yielded very similar results. Keep your hyperbole in check, please.
@NintendoArchive Your fanboyism is boiling over...
Damn this game will be a ***** show on Switch. Just look at the trailer which already is full of FPS drops lmao.
@EVIL-C former fanboyism, please. Admittedly I did prefer Nintendo hardware when it was only one generation behind. Moreover, it's only to safe-guard your credibility that I remark on the hyperbole.
Liking the direction so far. Plan to get it on PS5. If I like it enough, I’ll get it on Switch too.
What, this is coming to Switch? Never ever 😂
I wanna see how this runs on Switch.
@Bolt_Strike I really, truly don't have much faith in Sega doing this right.
Honestly, Sega... partner up with some true professionals of the genre--Nintendo--to guarantee that it's actually done right. :/ I want to see something great as a lifelong Sonic fan... but I seriously don't think Sega has what it takes for... well, almost any type of 3D Sonic undertaking. They have literally proven it time and time again... one miserable failure after another.
I want a great 3D Sonic game, but I can honstly say that Sega themselves can't give us that. Hell, they couldn't even give us a decent 2D Sonic game; it took Sonic fans initially unaffiliated with Sega to create the first truly good 2D Sonic game in decades--Sonic Mania!
If its out in less than a year you'd think they'd show off some gameplay.
What is everyone excited about? A few maps and a cutscene of Sonic running?
It actually looks good! Keeping my eye on it.
Between this and Kirby (and maybe DK?), it will be a pretty big year for 3D platformers.
@TMG44 it's still a year ahead of release. I would understand if you had serious concerns with Pokemon Legends, coming out next month, but with this one we can still hope.
@Specter_of-the_OLED they should really just say winter.
Looks good but empty, where are the rings?
So. Breath of the Sonic mixed with Sonic of the Colossus. I’m sure it’ll be perfectly fine given Sonic Team’s track record. Especially on Switch. I mean they got Sonic Colors, a Wii game, to run so perfectly fine on it.
This gives me kinda vibes of first Sonic 06 trailer, and I don't know how I feel about this.
Looks like they've dropped Sonic in your average open world game. Nothing about this screams "Sonic" to me.
I'm quite skeptical considering (i) I don't think every game needs to be "open world", and (ii) Sonic Team haven't really made a good Sonic game in 10 years. But I'll try to reserve my judgement until we see some actual gameplay.
I dont want to be a negative nancy and I am sure Sonic Fans are hyped, but... well Sonic Failure rate is almost 100%. So I dont think its a stretch if I am fortune telling to yall that this will be
1) extremly bugged
2) not worth it
3) a game that gets scored with 5/10 or 6/10's
@the_beaver sure we can hope, but the last Sonic game don't give us much hope.
We need the trick system in frontiers that would be epic!
@Meteoroid mmmm yep, give me that sweet sweet dynamic 720p and silky smooth cinematic 24fps
Does no one remember Sonic 2006?
How in the world do they expect this game to run on the Switch? The only way they would do that is to outsource the Switch port to Saber Interactive or Panic Button, but I doubt that's the case here.
@Vexx234 Wouldn't that make it a 1 percent chance it will be good, instead of a 50/50 chance?
Way to realistic looking for a Sonic game. They already tried this with Sonic 06, and it was horrible.
For a Sonic game, this looks really empty and boring. Nothing is going on.
It's like the developers wanted to make a realistic looking open world game, and made these nice looking sceneries and locations. Then management just put Sonic in there.
This does not look and feel like a Sonic game. The esthetics are all off.
If a Mario game looked like this, people in here would go nuts. I do not know what SEGA was thinking?
It looks neat and clean, if it wasn't a Sonic game. Make another game then, and leave Sonic out of this!
@Bolt_Strike It could be excellently mediocre.
I don't know if this is going to be good or not but at least Sonic is not portrayed like a clown that says dumb jokes for kids everytime he opens his mouth. It looks like they are portraying him in a much more adult way and that's a good sign in my opinion. We will see though
If it was one thing the excellent Sonic-blend of fast arcade-action platforming didn't need it was a large boring open world most likely filled with boring open world-stuff like fetch-quests, long transportation parts and slow exploration. It will probably have some drab crafting too just for the sake of it. This trend of all games needing an open world is really irritating, but I guess I'll give them the benefit of the doubt while waiting for a sequel to the absolutely fantastic Sonic Mania.
not sure how I feel about ian flynn writing the game, but I'll remain cautiously intrigued for now
They're making it for the next generation consoles, too, so I bet the Switch version sucks.
Given that the game was teased half a year ago, the trailer feels like a let-down. But having Flynn as the lead writer is exciting--moreso than just about anything else they could have announced about this game.
Based on the trailer - I'm surprised this is coming to Switch.
Damn, BotW feels. For me, Lost World drew inspiration from Mario Galaxy, and that wasn't a great game (Lost World). So not getting my hopes up at this homage.
Breath of the hedgehog, heh!
So they are trying open-world with Sonic. I wonder how it will turn out, hopefully good. But so far it looks very boring, empty and lifeless (and no, I didn't feel that way about botw like some people. Botw was great).
@Vexx234 3d sonic mania is Sonic Robo Blast 2, a game sonic team could learn a lot from tbh.
@Imerion speaking of 2d sonic im really pumped about sonic origins. im happy to play sonic 3 again!. hopefully we will hear news soon, they said more news before the end of the year.
@Henmii there will most likely be objects in this game, more than just running around.
@Leprecorn we need parkour too
@SuperZeldaFun just play on xbox or ps if you have one. nintendo has backed themselvs into this corner by making the switch underpowered.
@Clear-green-track-pi ,
Of course, it must be.
@Henmii yeah, even botw has items in the world.
