Nintendo of America has launched a holiday deal for select first-party digital game purchases on Switch.
Buying any one of the five games on offer will net you double the usual number of My Nintendo Gold Points you'd usually earn — essentially you'll get double the amount of eShop 'credit' on your Nintendo Account than you normally would. 5% of the total purchase is the typical value you earn in Gold Points, so with this offer you would accrue approximately six dollar's worth of points on a $60 game.
The games included in the deal are:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
- Miitopia
- Luigi's Mansion 3 (+DLC)
The offer runs from now until 11:59pm PT on 5th January 2022. This appears to be a Nintendo of America-only promotion at the time, although Europeans currently have the massive EU Switch eShop sale to be getting on with.
Let us know below if you plan on picking any of these up!

Double rewards points sounds nice and all. But practically speaking, Nintendo is listing a special offer where you can get several $59.99 games at the low low price of...$56.99. This is the silliest thing on the eshop, and yet they do it all the time.
Nintendo has some of the absolute dumbest promotions. Who in their right mind is going, "Well I was on the fence about getting Mario Kart 8, but double the Gold Points makes it a steal!" Or, "I was iffy about getting Nintendo Switch Online, but if I subscribe now, I can redeem 2,000 free Spirit Points on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! YEEEEAAAAAH, BABY!!!"
Remember last gen, when Nintendo gave you a full free first party retail game like Wind Waker or Pikmin 3 just for buying Mario Kart 8?
Of course they're games that I'm sure, those who care for Gold Points, probably already have. And why limit it to 5 games? Just really backwards decision making sometimes
An offer on gold points should never be the reason to get a game. Games go on discount for 33%, 50%, even 80% off. Even if they quintupled the gold points, it wouldn't even be worth it. It's just a convenient few cents off.
$6 cashback isn't very smart when you could get an immediate saving during any sale.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for example, has been on sale for $40 digitally multiple times this year.
I'm surprised the 8 year old $60 game Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze isn't on here as well.
Eh, whatever...I have these games already, except for Miitopia which doesn't interest me.
@burninmylight Yes I do!
I'll probably get Miitopia out of this offer since that's the only game out of the five I don't have. I loved it on my 3DS back in 2017 and I still loved it on Switch via demo.
Mildly tempted by Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury since I don't have it on Switch yet, but I'd rather wait for an actual discount. Ironically, some retailers are better than the eShop at offering digital deals, though physical still often gives me more bang for my buck.
How about we trade double coins for half off? I might finally try Luigi's mansion at that price.
Just had 300 gold points expire b/c I couldn't be bothered to spend them on anything, another 10 expiring this month. And My Nintendo continues to focus on mobile games like nobody told the people running it the Switch launched nearly 5 years ago.
So you get a slightly more gold coins for only 5 games?
That's a bit weird.
@burninmylight Maybe if the Switch was flopping we'd get something like that again.
@turntSNACO actually it’s 53.99 not 56.
@rjejr use them to buy your digital games. There are literally thousands of games that are only digital. The only coins that expire for me are the silver ones and I usually just buy a wallpaper before they do.
@StephenYap3 it’s a great game. Everyone in my house dropped animal crossing to play it.
@Obito_Sigma it’s all about need. Some people may not want to wait for the next sale which will be months from now after this. That’s how they get ya. I agree though I myself just play other things until a game I want digitally is on sale or physically also.
Nintendo throwing loose change at us…..
@burninmylight
That was because Nintendo needed to promote the Wii U after its awful launch. However, the Switch had something similar already. Remember those game vouchers they gave out around the time NSMBUDX came out? Similar idea.
@rjejr You literally couldn't find anything to spend $3 on the eshop? Even some indie worth giving a random try to?
this must be the deal of the year. hmm... i got a physical copy of mario kart 8 - should I double dip for sweet gold coins?/s
tbh, i stopped claiming those coins a long time ago...
@Jeff2sayshi Well I probably could have if I spent the time to look, but w/ over 1,000 games and my limited play time, almost none of which is spent on indies, I decided I'd probably spend more time looking for a game than playing the game. So I just didn't look.
Most of the gold points I lost were from carts I borrowed from my library so I didn't really feel like I was losing anything I deserved anyway.
@burninmylight It was on the Wii U...a console that nobody bought. So they were desperately giving games so people could buy it.
And seeing how the Wii U is the worst sold Nintendo console to date...I think it didn't work.
Im happy with the 12 coins I got for picking up Saints Row 4 for under 3 bucks yesterday.
@ModdedInkling @DK-Fan I'm well aware of that; I got my Wii U shortly after launch. I mean, wouldn't that be something that only a Wii U fan remembers? And if you're a Wii U fan (especially if it was your only current console), you're well aware of how hard times were back then?
I said back then that desperate Nintendo is best Nintendo.
If skyward sword was one of these I’d have bitten so hard. That’s okay! I like when they do these things as an incentive. Plus, gold coins are worth much more than platinum coins nowadays.
@burninmylight Remember when the Wii U was a flop and they were desperate.
gold points?
nintendo- you aren't even trying
This is stupid. Although there is nothing more satisfying then lego city being bought with only gold points.
@UglyCasanova Thanks for the heads up, just bought SRIV, didn’t even notice it was so cheap, bargain!
Have you tried SRIII on Switch yet? It’s pretty good now, especially in handheld Definitely scratched that GTA itch I had after the disappointment of the Trilogy port.
@Kintypoo121 nope, I had played 3 ages ago on Xbox so didn't feel the need for that especially since it supposedly runs poorly on switch.
But yeah, I could hardly pass up 4 either at the price of a sandwich.
@ChromaticDracula Platinum coins are worth exactly nothing since you still pay shipping, which costs more than the trinkets you get are worth.
@UglyCasanova It’s been patched up a fair bit and runs pretty solid now, at least in handheld. Had previously held off buying it myself on release due to those same reasons (performance and having played on PC).
@Kintypoo121 Ahh I see. I think it was still like $12 when I got 4 for so cheap, made that an easy decision. I'm enjoying it a ton right now and am impressed it handles the sonic speeds and tons of explosions so we'll even on my Lite.
@UglyCasanova That’s good to hear! For $3 you can’t go wrong
@BTB20 Read my post that was literally two spots above yours.
