Stardew Valley creator, Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone, last week revealed his new game, the Haunted Chocolatier.
Although a PC release is the only system he's "100% certain about", he still has "every intention" of bringing it to other major platforms as well. So, when can we expect this new title to launch? Apparently, when it's ready.
In a new blog post on the game's official website, Barone explained how he wouldn't rest or release the game until he was "personally satisfied" that it was "very fun and compelling". And if it doesn't get there, he just won't release it - fortunately, he's pretty confident he'll see the project out.
"The bottom line, is that I won’t rest, or release this game, until I am personally satisfied that it’s very fun and compelling, in every aspect. If it never gets there, I’ll just never release it. But don’t worry, I have 100% faith that I’ll get it there. Everything is on the right track so far, I have the complete vision for the game in my head, and it’s just a matter of “grinding it out”, which is what I’m doing every day! Thanks for reading all this."
As noted, it's just a matter of "grinding it out" as there are seemingly no major deadlines to meet as you might see with a major developer or publisher. This is all about making sure the Haunted Chocolatier turns out to be the best experience it can possibly be for fans. While this should arguably be the standard, it's reassuring to hear after seeing certain releases rushed out in recent years, that are in a broken state at launch.
Are you happy to wait until Barone is personally satisfied with the state of the game? Comment below.

No pressure on releasing it then! (Phew, what a thing to say!)
Don't care, As long as its good I will wait the next 1,000 years.
Probably shouldn't have announced it until he was at that point then, because now people are gonna have to wait years for a game that might not even release (it probably will but still)
@Deepdoop
I'd rather wait for a game than wait for a question about if there's going to be a next game.
It’s honestly so refreshing for him to just be honest that it’ll be out when it’s ready. This is true indie development, no shareholders to worry about, no unnecessary deadlines.
Remember that RCMADIAX dev? Lol
Hopefully Sega learn something from this guy and apply the same knowledge to their new Sonic game too.
I have a lot of respect for that.
Stardew Valley's Creator Won't Release His New Game Until He's "Personally Satisfied
...and I won't leave the bathroom until I am sure my hands are clean. Can I get an article too?
@Crono1973 Who hurt you?
@Specter_of-the_OLED We would all love Sega to do that... But that not how the world work when you got bills to pay, developers to pay with families, mortgages, and bills of their own.
This guy can say that cause he only has to worry about himself, and only himself. Stardew probably made him so much money, and he could have easily disappeared off the face of the earth. So he just chosing to develop another game cause he wanted to.
I respect the decision, but I don't like this trend of revealing games way too early
He don't want to put a cyperpunk 2077 on us. Respect. Lightning rarely strikes twice so i don't expect it to be as massive as Stardew turned out to be but i'm sure it will be fun
I'm really excited for Haunted Chocolatier because Stardew Valley was a big surprise for me. Usually I don't play RPGs a lot but this game is so much fun that I'm willing to buy Haunted Chocolatier on day one.
I'm impatient when it comes to things I want. So I'd love to play it as soon as possible but I think it's more important that Barone is happy with his game so that we can enjoy it as well. Also I really wish Haunted Chocolatier will have the same multiplayer / co-op possibilities as Stardew Valley on the Switch.
Then why did he released Stardew Valley?
No delay, no crunch time, no drama?
Is that even allowed in 2021???
@Crono1973 No offense, but on a video game news site, I think it's natural to have small stories about people important to video games, a person who singlehandedly made a beloved game with incredible staying power. A story about a game that looks to appeal directly to those fans and an update that involves context for how and when it would be released.
Same issue as Hollow Knight Silksong. I know we all say we want to know, by it's better to not announce a game until you know you're at least relatively close to release (Axiom Verge 2, even with the delays).
@thiz A bit of cynical take. Circumstance are very, very different now. Blood, Sweat and Pixels is a great book, though, for sure.
@JoeMoney333 With Silksong, the reveal just looked so polished and ready. And it was hard to gauge how far along it might be. Hollow Knight had a similar issue in its promotion.
Here's the thing: Hollow Knight ended up SO expansive and more than I thought it would be. I'm guessing once they got Silksong's core gameplay working they realized that they needed to deliver something as involving, which means tons of content. (My hope is that they have learned from some of the flaws in Hollow Knight as well)
Either way, I'm glad to know it is looking so good while in development, the wait it hard, but the work Team Cherry is doing is much harder than the energy I expend "waiting". lol.
@thiz giving that his first game he was learning how to program videogames after many updates to Stardew I am fairly certain he is much more experienced towards game development
Nothing wrong with teasing a project. Everyone needs to be patient and respect the long, arduous task of a game's development. I'm sure the wait will be worth it. 'When it's done' should be applied to more release dates instead of holding teams to specific time frames.
@sikthvash i agree 99% (the 1% applies to the half life franchise)
@GannonBanned ^_^ I would imagine after the success of Alyx, there will be at least some more spin-offs planned.
@sikthvash one would hope, but I’ve been let down too many times before
As long as it's stable and up to date then a release is fine with me. Just don't release and have a Day One Update that is just dumb.
Nice to not have shareholders or really anything above you to force you to put out a subpar product just to hit an arbitrary deadline. Imagine how much greater the game industry would be if more companies followed that example.
Well okay then, whatever they need to do.
Oh, You won't realese it until you'd happy?
Come, sit next to hollow knight 2 and Cuphead's dlc
@CactusMan After selling 15 million copies, he can sit comfortably in the "financially independent" category if he plays it financially safe. He basically won´t have to work anymore the rest of his life.
He can just do whatever he wants and take all the time he needs with this new game. Release it or not. Exactly like he says.
@SwitchVogel He is just an extremely lucky person at this point. One person developing this game and then having such success that all profits were directly for him alone.
He basically doesn´t have to work anymore the rest of his life if he wishes to.
It´s a bit different when you are a gaming studio with 100-500(or more) people in employment, developing high caliber AAA games that cost 100+ million dollars in development costs.
