Today sees the launch of Switch's latest highly-anticipated RPG Eastward, and Nintendo's dropped a handy launch trailer to give us one more look at what it's all about.
A charming-looking single-player RPG, Eastward has you following protagonists John and Sam in an "emotional journey across a world falling to ruin." As you can see from the trailer, the game's set in a highly detailed pixel art world full of monsters, distant cities, and a quirky cast of characters. Here's the official synopsis:
Set in the near-future, society is on the brink, and the human population is at an all-time low. A deadly toxic presence has spread across the land, destroying and devouring everything in its path. Escape the tyrannical clutches of a subterranean society and join Eastward’s unlikely duo on an exciting adventure to the land above! Discover beautiful yet bizarre settlements and make new friends as you travel across the world by rail.

Decided to grab it just before the pre-order sale ended here. Looking forward to getting stuck into it in a few days after I finish what I'm currently playing.
I'll wait for the review, but this look very promising, I can't get enough of the art style!
Was tempted to get it while the pre-order sale was still on but I have a few other games on my plate at the moment and wasnt too fussed with an extra £2 or so going to the developer/publisher when I do get around to getting it.
Looking forward to NL's review. Eurogamer and Polygon both recommend it.
Been excited for this game for years - got it downloaded ready to play when I get some spare time. Is there going to be a review?
@Poodlestargenerica Many reviews came out a couple of days ago and the game is getting a lot of praise.
I pre ordered a physical copy. I hope I don't regret it, I hope it performs okay on the Switch.
For anyone that wants a good indepth review watch switch up's. I always find them very good as they rate a game on 5 categories. He reviewed this game very high.
@Poodlestargenerica see my above comment buddy.
Chucklefish, please consider giving this game a gorgeous, normally available, physical release with the same love as Wargroove got. It's an amazing game with a beautiful physical release that didn't get its price doubled due to import fees and such, making me love it even more. I'm quite sure this one deserves the same love.
I just started it and I am super impressed so far. Stunning pixel artwork, wonderful music, great character dialogue.
@Nerdfather1 I'm seeing a lot of user-reviews mentioning game breaking bugs, too. Might be smart to wait for some patches, as usual in modern gaming.
This looks like one to look forward to then!
I have a physical copy on pre-order with Bazaar-Bazaar, UK based importer of English-language Asia region releases. I've used them a few times now.
It's a very good game
When’s the review coming?!
Switchup already gave it a 9,5. And others also give it pretty high scores. Nice!
Ugh I really want to start this but I’m still finishing up spiritfarer! I’m probably like 70% into it, but it’s getting so sluggish. If I leave I might not come back
I don’t know if i’m the only one that does this. But i always choose a winter game. A game with a great story and/or atmosphere for the shorter and darker days of the year. This seems like a excellent winter game for me. This together with Metroid Dread wil keep me busy this fall and winter.
@BloodNinja Do you have a link to posts about these bugs? Because I just scrolled through Steam user reviews and haven't seen a word of such.
I've already got the physical on preorder! This looks amazing.
I've been given a review code for this one. Will be fun to seek my teeth into it as soon as I can start a lengthy session.
@FoxMcCloud Dude I do the same, that's so awesome to hear. I like to have something cozy between December 1st and December 20th, then something else on Christmas going into January. Not sure if your timeframe is similar but it does feel like such a special time
@Indielink I read negative steam reviews regarding it.
Will get the physical version at Play-Asia once I finish with Ni no Kuni 2 this year.
Been waiting for this. Still trying to finish the lengthy log of Neo:TWEWY, YS IX, and GAA:Chronicles. So I can wait. But I’m so excited!
@BloodNinja I've had no issues yet on Switch. Just played 3 hours.
@SMH88 Nice!
@ItsATM That’s the reason i do it! In the early days it was Donkey Kong Country that came out just around that time! Glad to hear i’m not the only one!
This has gotten good reviews but I want to see how NL feels about it on Switch before I buy. Switchup seems like a good source but I'd rather have 2, specific to the Switch version. Don't judge me, I just want to know how it plays on the hybrid console.
Love the in-game art style of this game. A shame the promotional art looks so odd. Like why does the girl have mutton chops?
@Poodlestargenerica I couldn't have said it better myself
Such a nice game. I truly love this game without even playing more than an hour! I can confidently say it's a very nice game every old gamer/ new will enjoy. This is what we wished it was in the 80s/90s. Glad they're still making games of this 80s/90s quality till this day.
Gonna go play this right now.
@Fighter_Hayabusa Began to try it this morning before work, but I can confirm it seem to run well!
I've given the game 5-6 hours so far and it's a very charming little game. I can't wait to see how the story progresses.
I'm playing on Switch and there definitely haven't been any bugs at all.
